HUMIRA  (ADALIMUMAB):  Adalimumab is used to reduce pain and swelling due to certain types of arthritis (such as rheumatoid, psoriatic, juvenile idiopathic, ankylosing spondylitis). This medication is also used to treat certain skin disorders (such as plaque-type psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa). It works by blocking a protein (tumor necrosis factor or TNF) found in the body's immune system that causes joint swelling and damage in arthritis as well as red scaly patches in psoriasis. Adalimumab belongs to a class of drugs known as TNF blockers. By reducing joint swelling, this medication helps to reduce further joint damage and preserve joint function. Adalimumab is also used to treat certain bowel conditions (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis) and a certain eye disease (uveitis).    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  Psoriasis Possibly the cause of my mental fogginess, but I'm really not sure. Also very succeptible to infections, colds, flu, etc. The benefits outweigh the side-effects. It is a little scary knowing that, for instance, when the stomach bug comes through my child's school, I absolutely will get it, but it's given me my life back. At first, completely cleared me, now 80% after 3 years, so not bad. Was never offically diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis, but I think I had it because Humira gave me such an overwhelming sense of everything feeling better, and I can tell when I'm a little late for my next injection when I start feeling achy and swollen.  1  CROHN'S Distended belly. General swelling. Weight Gain (about 5 lbs). Swollen lymph nodes. Very foggy head - difficulty with word retrieval, train of thought, etc. Extreme fatigue. Loss of menstruation. I'm getting the hell off this drug and leaving the medical cartel behind for good. I have SUFFERED with Crohn's/Ulcerative Colitis for almost 8 years and have done a lot of research on natural cures. They exist - it's only my own fear that has held me back from really giving any a fair try. It is harder - you have to radically change your diet, your thoughts about this disease, etc. but it will be easier than developing Lymphoma or MS or any of the other horrific side effects of this toxic chemical. Understand if you are taking this that you are a guinea pig for Big Pharma. I do think some modern medicine is miraculous but not for this. God did not create the body to be sick. There is a cause and effect for everything. I really believe that we can all heal from this 100% naturally and this terrible experience with Humira is prompting me to try once & for all. I wish you all the best of luck and health from this very short life we've been gifted. F 32 1 months

3  Psoriatic Arthritis In the beginning it worked like a miracle. Now within a day I get extremely tired and my arms / legs feel a bit tingly. a couple days later I start getting headaches. a week later things start to simmer down and by the end of the second week (when my next shot is due) I feel a lot better. So Side effects are: Tired, Headaches, arms and leg tingle or strange feelings. I was on Enbrel for 8 years prior to this and had to switch because of the possibility of Chemical Induced Lupus. This Drug worked great for the first few months then all of the symptoms started. Now I am not sure I want to continue - quality of life thing. M 45 2 years

3  Crohn's Had headache, nausea, stomach pain & diarrhea with crohn's but sice loading Humira dose headache & nausea much worse. Even rx anti-nausea med doesn't help Too soon to tell about how Humira will effect crohn's but so far the headache & nausea are awful. Will they go away with time? Is it because the loading dose is high? Any feedback would be great. M 14 6 days

5  crohns Tired the next morning after injection. Sometimes injection site is red, bruised and itchy.noticed a few red patches on dry skin on my back. I've had crohns for 2 1/2 yrs. Have used prednisone and pentasa. Steriods help me bounce back and was feeling better when I went on humira. I have had no crohns symptoms since. Working great for me but these other reviews are frightening and I feel a bit lucky. Hoping humira is not too good to be true... F 28 4 months

5  psoriasis Small cuts (hang nails, nicks) don't heal - I have had some for months now. No other notable side effects. I also have IBS and have not noticed any changes (worsening or otherwise) in my symptoms. No side effects after injections, not even site reaction. I am 100% CLEAR from psoriasis and have been after about a month and a half of taking Humira. This has changed my life and improved my quality of life ten fold. I have has psoriasis since I was about 9 - over 10 years now. For the first time since I was a child I can wear tshirts, bathing suits, dresses, and not think about my P every hour of everyday. I had P on arms, legs, torso, and scalp. The injections suck and they do hurt more than the average needle. But the pain is nothing compared to what pain from P was. I prefer the prefilled syringe as I had problems with the autoinjector pen injecting prematurely (user error - I couldn't hold it into my skin firmly enough due to nerves and it injected twice into the air - 2 wasted needles!). I inject in upper legs. F 20 4 months

1  Psoriatic Arthritis At first no response, then after about 3 weeks, I felt great & all my arthritis pain was gone. That lasted only about 5 days & then my pain returned with a vengence along with a whole slew of new symptoms: very tender lymph nodes, difficulty concentrating, burning pain in feet, ankles, shins arms & hands, tooth sensitivity & pain, headaches, fatigue, very sore random spots on hands & ankles, & increased cramps in legs, feet & hands. This drug scares the hell out of me. I thought I was in bad shape before I took it, now everything seems worse. My rheumatologist said that I'm probably allergic to it & took me off of it. Then he told me that there was nothing else he could do for me & to follow up with my family doctor. What a jerk! What do I do now? F 54 2 months

5  CROHN'S This is a follow-up to my 10/27/07, 02/25/08 & 02/05/08 postings. I’ve taken Humira since late 2007. One shot every 15-18 days. Taking the shot just before bedtime is how I deal with the occasional headache following the shot. However, the headache is not nearly as severe as in the beginning . . . no big deal really. I had a difficult time recovering from the Flu in 08 . . . ended up with bronchitis. This is the first drug that has worked for me other than prednisone. . . I had catastrophic reactions to Sulfasalazine, Asacol, Dipentum and Imuran before finding Humira. I’m free of all Crohn’s symptoms. M 51 3 years

1  P and PA Though it did work for me very quickly 4 months into the treatment I got Pericardial TB which was very serious as I was off work for 10 weeks. After 6 months of TB treatment I have been discharged and I am being very cautious in selecting my next option. It has been suggested that I can return to similar drugs like Enbrel which is less riskier than Humira for TB but is still risky as these are potent drugs. BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN CONSIDERING USING THESE DRUGS THEY HAVE SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS. Its up to you to decide and weigh up the options for your situation. Take suppliments to help yout immune system and the moment you suspect something go to your doctor to get it checked out however minor you think it might be. Would love to hear from somebody who has returned to it after serious illness. Currently I am erring on the side of caution because of what has happened so I am not keen on returning and looking at other options. M 54 4 months

5  Ankylosing Spondylitis injection site burning, rash, and occasional itchy "bug" bites. I have gained weight and having a hard time getting it off. I've had two gum infections, and my psoriasis on my finger still comes and goes. I also have been experiencing shortness of breath when I'm going uphill. It could be because I could not walk uphill so quickly before. I'll be visiting my Dr. to make sure its not related to the heart failure side effect. Overall Humira has helped greatly! My pain and inflammation has gone from a 10 down to a 1.5 F 32 6 months

4  Rheumatoid nodule in my eye My rheumatologist prescribed Humira in December 2008, after I had developed a rheumatoid nodule in my left eye. I had been taking Enbrel for approx.5 yrs. and it saved my life. I was not aware that RA could affect one's organs. I have not experienced any side effects from Humira so far. I don't understand the reason my doc didn't start me on Humira instead of Enbrel but since taking it I have so far not experienced any side effects nor have I had head colds, flu or any other maladies. I might also add I had been taking methotrexate in combination with both the above drugs and noticed substantial hair loss. Since Methotrexate is a cancer drug it made sense. I researched an alternative and my doc switched me to Sulfasalazin and I don't seem to be losing as much hair. Please ladies - do your research! F 65 15 months

5  Psoratic Arthritis Slight pins and numbness in my toes, easy bruising. I am so grateful for this drug. Previous to taking humira I had no quality of life, between suffering the arthitis and the psorasis to over 80% of my body, not to mention the depression looking like a freak and having no energy or strength to live life. I am worried that in the future I may not be able to take this drug if I develop side effects, but fingers crossed none as yet. It has given me my life back after 15 years. F 36 18 months

4  Psoratic Arthritis Just noticing muscle twitching in lower legs and leg cramps when asleep. Not sure if Humira is the cause as of yet. Otherwise, no side effects! Before I knew what was wrong with me, I was having heal pain in 1 foot. Then a few weeks later, my knee was stiff and hurting. Weeks following, my toes were swollen and stiff with pain. Doctors did not know what was going on with me. I kept going back to foot doctors begging for help. I was finally referred to a Rhumatolgist. I had psoriasis for a year but did not realize the 2 were related. I finally found out what was wrong with me and got on Humira. Two months after being on it, I felt better, could walk without constant pain, and psoriasis cleared up on scalp, but still on lower legs. A big improvement for me, i thought the pain would never go away. F 35 7 months
