HUMIRA  (ADALIMUMAB):  Adalimumab is used to reduce pain and swelling due to certain types of arthritis (such as rheumatoid, psoriatic, juvenile idiopathic, ankylosing spondylitis). This medication is also used to treat certain skin disorders (such as plaque-type psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa). It works by blocking a protein (tumor necrosis factor or TNF) found in the body's immune system that causes joint swelling and damage in arthritis as well as red scaly patches in psoriasis. Adalimumab belongs to a class of drugs known as TNF blockers. By reducing joint swelling, this medication helps to reduce further joint damage and preserve joint function. Adalimumab is also used to treat certain bowel conditions (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis) and a certain eye disease (uveitis).    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Crohn's Disease drug induced psoriasis, eczema, folliculitis and extreme hair loss Humira worked great for my Crohn's symptoms, in fact it technically put me in "remission." However, this took 3 months to occur, and about 4 months into taking the medication I broke out in psoriasis head to toe. Very itchy and flakey scalp, psoriasis lesions all over both of my legs, back, arms and chest. This then turned into a sort of eczema like rash, and what my doctor called follicular eczema on my legs. Most striking is the fact that I have lost 95% of my hair (which was already a little thin to begin with) since starting this drug. There are huge bald patches all over my head which alternate between feeling extremely smooth and flakey. I stopped Humira around 6 weeks ago, and am still battling the rashes and increasing hair loss. I wouldn't recommend this drug based on the side effects alone. F 24 5 months

5  Rheumatoid Arthritis Swelling/redness/itching at the injection site for first 6 months only. Been amazing for controlling my RA (had for 13.5 yrs). Taken in conjunction with methotrexate my Consultant now says I am in remission. Has given me back a great deal of independence. F 40 4 years

2  PA & AS Three days after injection I experience a fairly problematic arthritis flare. It causes major joint aches and pains. I wondered if it was the drug and asked my Rheumatologist. He mentioned that it is something that the docs hear about but don't make known. It lasts for a week and then I start to feel better. Side effects aren't worth it. Why would I want to feel good every other week? I will not be taking another injection. Skin issues cleared up a bit (including scalp issues) but overall body pain increases for a week after injection. This sort of defeats the purpose if you ask me. This drug works for one of my coworkers but I'm not impressed with the results. F 50 3 months

5  Ankylosing Spondylitis Injection site pain and bruising. Increased allergic reaction to chlorine. Persistent HPV causing cervical dysplasia. Miracle drug. I had terrible joint pain, trouble sleeping, swollen ankles, difficultly walking especially down stairs, frequent iritis. Now able to run 2 hours at a time. No iritis flare-ups since start of treatment. Less fatigue. Hope it keeps working. F 28 5 months

3  Ankylosing Spondylitis Fatigue and occasionally headaches in the first 3 days after injecting. Short term memory loss/brain fog. I have developed dermagraphism. (full body itching) I also had an anaphylaxis episode. Throat seizing and all. (I have zero allergies) A baby tooth I still had (genetically no adult) went from being just fine to needing to be pulled in 3 months. Most frustrating, I now become exponentially hungover with any alcohol consumption. Recently I had one and a half glasses of wine and woke up with a pounding headache and an allover "off" feeling.  Headache got worse throughout the day and I became worse feeling and nauseous. I then threw up and continued to until 11pm at night.  HUNGOVER TILL 11pm IS CRAZY!  Another time I had 2 bud lights and woke up with a headache and vomiting till I started dry heaving. This happened other times as well.  Due to a tooth implant (I now need) I have been going on and off Humira near procedures and when I'm off it I can drink like my old self. HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED THIS???   I would love to know.  I inject every 10 days. Overall the Humira has helped with my AS and the symptoms on it are better than the pain off it. F 22 1.5 years

4  Crohn's Disease I guess I've been lucky. No side effects so far. I seem to get fatigued a couple days before the next injection. Haven't taken it long enough to be sure about some things. The last time I gave myself an injection, the day after (a Sunday) I felt "off" a little (a little tired, maybe a little rundown, not my usual self). Am also taking Mercaptopurine (2x50mg tablets a day). Started taking Humira a couple months after a relapse. Abdominal soreness when exercising not there anymore. Tried the injections in my legs and my abdomen. Hurts more in my legs. Am rotating sites in my abdomen. I take the Pen Injector out of the refrigerator for an hour or so before using it. The last part of the injection stings the most. Some soreness for a short while afterwards. Bruising only one time. M 58 2 months

1  RA I have had an am having almost every side effect listed. Fatigue, hives, flu-like symptoms, headache, migraine aura with vision, swelling of hands and feet, extreme muscle pain, muscle cramps, RA about 10 times worse, scaly skin and scalp. Also the spot on my back that itches that others have described. I have been living in intense pain for close to 4 months, wondering if I will ever be myself again. Horrid, horrid, horrid drug. Needs more testing. F 58 1 times

4  Rheumatoid Arthritis Mild nausea daily and moderate to severe headaches daily since my first injection The side-effects are manageable when compared to the pain associated with the RA. Before this first injection I had resorted to using a cane for support due to the deterioration of my right knee. This week I am walking more freely unassisted by the cane and last night rode an exercise bike for 30 min for the first time in 8 months due to greater joint mobility. Will continue with this treatment based on other peoples posts that headache and nausea symptoms reduce over time M 48 1 weeks

4  Crohns Consistent burning of feet, itchy scalp 1 & 3/4 yrs of "in-remission" per my doctor. Just now beginning to see some side effects of crohns coming back and hopeful they can be minimized or eliminated. Well worth the effort to learn self-injection (in-stomach) after hand-warming the drug for 10-15 mins. I tried injections in leg and found them extremely painful. M 74 82 weeks

3  RA Itching all over. Legs are the worst. Taking double dose (every week instead of every other week). After the first month my Sed rate went up. My doc decided to double the dose and give it another month. Pain seems to be going down now, but the itching is bad. The winter makes it worst with the dry skin. We'll see what happens once I hit the 3 month mark. M 42 2 months

3  ankolosing spondilitis After a year of use at the rate of one 40mg dose every 2 weeks I suffered severe bronchitis for about three months. Have since been taking my prescibed dosage at irregular intervals - about once a month. Have since been suffering from frequent colds/flus (mild ones), however I rarely contracted such sicknesses prior to using Humira. I thought Humira was a wonder drug for the first year I took it. It stopped all pain associated with my AS. However in the second year of my treatment I have been injecting less frequently and finding I still get the same pain relieving benefits, but finding that I am always getting colds or flus. Has anyone had similar issues with the long term use of Humira? What can I expect in the future if I continue use? M 44 24 months

3  Ulcerative Colitis/Rheum Arthritis Injection site soreness. Ever since I started taking Humira I have been sick with either sinus infections, colds or other upper respiratory infections. It takes me a lot longer to recover from anything. Right now I have had the same "bug" for 5 weeks with no signs of improvement in the near future. F 39 6 months

4  PSA Swelling at injection site, lots of sinus infections, urinary tract infections, sudden allergies to alcohol and latex This has been a wonder-drug for me. Up until about 6 weeks ago. The injections started going wrong (liquid leaking out, huge white bumps appearing) and have now developed sudden serious allergies to alcohol and latex. I will probably having to stop using Humira now, which is such a shame, as it really worked for me. F 29 18 months

4  Crohn's Disease Headache and nausea continuously but with decreasing intensity that lasts for 3 days after every injection. No hair loss like others have reported. No injection site redness or rash either. The injections are painful but not outside of what I can tolerate. The drug has helped a lot with chronic abdominal pain and fatigue due to my disease.
