HUMIRA  (ADALIMUMAB):  Adalimumab is used to reduce pain and swelling due to certain types of arthritis (such as rheumatoid, psoriatic, juvenile idiopathic, ankylosing spondylitis). This medication is also used to treat certain skin disorders (such as plaque-type psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa). It works by blocking a protein (tumor necrosis factor or TNF) found in the body's immune system that causes joint swelling and damage in arthritis as well as red scaly patches in psoriasis. Adalimumab belongs to a class of drugs known as TNF blockers. By reducing joint swelling, this medication helps to reduce further joint damage and preserve joint function. Adalimumab is also used to treat certain bowel conditions (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis) and a certain eye disease (uveitis).    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  rhumatoid arthritus Suffering heart palpatations, loss of breath, dizzyness, numbness on feet, legs, arms, face, back pain, fuzzy head, severe headaches, bowel function problems, loss of balance, and hair loss, skin problems, sudden onset of extremely tired episodes. At first I thought it was a miricle drug, and such a relief to the pain of arthritis. Now after taking it for over five years, and gradually having these problems come on, I realize all the side effects are not worth it. F 54 5 years

3  Psoriatic arthritis and arthritis loss of appetite, dizziness, lower back pain for a few days after injection. I do not like the shot in the leg and much prefer the abdomen. I have noticed some improvement in my feet and can walk without pain most of the time. It hasn't helped at all with spine (mostly neck and mid back). It also has not helped the plaque psoriasis but that's a minor issue. I also take methotrexate but reduced the dosage due to the side effects. The PsA felt much better when combined with Humira and the higher dose of MTX but I just couldn't deal with the side effects. The rheumatologist states it can take three months for Humira to be completely effective so I'm still hopeful. F 36 8 weeks

1  rheumatoid arthritis Received first injection in leg without incident; second injection 1 week later resulted in inability to urinate (within 45 minutes of injection), rectal bleeding, lower back (organ) pain. Five weeks has passed now and same symptoms persist. This is a dangerous drug. M 52 5 weeks

3  psoriais & psoriatic arthritis as side effects I've experinced nausea, loss of appetite, bloating, back pain, headaches and dizziness So far it has taken care of some of the inflammation in my hands and toes due to psoriatic arthritis and has relieved some of the pain, but I still have to take prednisone, oxycodone or ultracet, etodolac to help keep it under control. As far as the plaque, it hasn't helped at all. So far not convinced that this will work but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt... still feel alot of aches in joints and muscles F 30 3 weeks

5  Chron's Disease Pain and bruising at the injection site if squeezed too tight while injecting. No bruising if loosely gripped. The Pain of injection is standard. Diagnosed with Crohn's in 1983. Went through 7 years of horrid pain, then bowel resection - lost 8 feet of small intestine. Did fine for 15 years, them a major flareup with internal bleeding. Prednisone controlled it for a year, then went on Asacol then Lialda. A perforated duodenal ulcer and two abscesses led to another major surgery and then use of Humira. I have been on Humira for 10 months and find it amazing. My blood tests have never been so good in decades, put on 20 lbs., and I experience no abdominal pain what ever. I hope that the assistance program will last - I could not afford it without out the grant. The billing department screwed it up once and took $1000 from my banking account, but they say they will refund the error. I swear by Humira - it has done wonders for me. No side effects but a little fatigue. Thank you, thank you Humira for giving me my life back. M 53 10 months

5  Psoriatic Arthritis None (so far). I have felt bloated after eating, but I do not know if it is the medicine or not. Have had arthritis for 15 years and never felt as good as I do now. I have just taken my second dose, so I am only 15 days into treatment, however, I have much better range of motion and already almost no pain. M 37 15 days

3   I have had crohns for about 2 years. I have just taken my second does of humira. On the one hand my stomach was almost immediately better than it has ever been. However I thought I was going crazy. I am having serious memory lapses that just got worse after taking my second dose. I am a student in veterinary school and this is completely unacceptable to me. I thought the test were getting harder, I failed two exams this week. I have never failed a test in my life!! Like others it is a toss up between the side effects and the crohns. For me it was a no brainer (haha literally). Brain = more important than intestines. If anyone has comments about how long the foggyness lasts after you stopped the drug I would love to hear from you. M 25 3 weeks

4  crohn's diease i have had crohn's since i was 7 yrs old...so im an old pro at this. suffered the entire time with recurring flares. was given a "death sentence" when i was only 17. but God is good and i am alive.humira was introduced to me 1 yr ago. i have been on 40mg/2wks. with a side order of steroids to liven things up a bit;) humira saved me. i was leaving a permanent indention in the couch from not being able to function. my biggest complain...fatigue. lets face it..crohns SUCKS. there is not a magic drug for us. you have to weight your options for you and your life. what i will put up with might not work for you. what quality of life do you want? if your on the fence about this drug...try it. then make the decision which has the worst side effects..crohns or humira. for me personally, steroids are so much worst. but as i said...this is your life and no 2 crohns patients are alike. i have been thru the fire with this disease. if you need a shoulder i can be there. hope everything turns out well:) F 27 1 years

1  psoriasis little to no improvement on my skin - I was on this medication for almost 4 months when the next thing I knew I was in the hospital with a 650+ blood sugar level - and I'm NOT a diabetic!! I get a physical every year - blood test is always well within range of "normal"... while in the hospital (week long stay) I needed 150+ units of insulin daily just to keep my blood sugar down in the 300-350 range. Now just over three months later (obviously stopped taking the drug right away) I have no need for insulin what so ever and blood sugar levels have returned to normal again with just oral medications (actos and metforman) WOULD NOT RECCOMEND TO ANYONE! - this drug turned my world upsidedown to say the least!!  3  Crohn's Disease I started taking this about a year ago. At first 40mg/2 weeks. My lower legs ached terribly. My doctor suggested taking COQ10 which helped tremendously by the next day. Then my crohn's symptoms started coming back two days before my next shot was due. Now I am taking 40mg/week. My symptoms are better and I am starting to get my energy back. Hoping over time to go back to remission completely. So far I am happy with it. The shots hurt a lot when I did it in my leg. My tummy hurts much less and the pens allow my to do it myself (I was too chicken to use the syringes myself!). F 43 1 years

1  Humira I started taking Humira 40mg in April 2007 approximately 4 weeks after the first shot I started having severe vertigo and dizziness along with tinnitus. My balance has presented an issue since. I have visited and asked several doctors including my primary care physicians, my rheumatologists, 2 otolaryngologists, 2 neurologists, a neuro otolaryngologist I have also had a million dollar work up so they say. They can't find anything wrong and I have asked each an every one of these doctors if Humira would cause thi and each one has informed me that it would not. After taking injections for 17 months I decided to stop taking the injections in October of 2008. Since stopping the injections the symptoms have gradually subsided. I am not completely free of the symptoms and have reached a plateau. My questions are was it the Humira causing this and will these symptoms ever go away and could you recommend a Doctor that specializes in medication reactions. M 59 17 months

1  psoriatic arthritis after 1 ONE injection 9 weeks ago terrible constant headache, sinus problems, painful scalp all on LEFT side, opposite side of my injection. My reumatologist said can't be the drug! Has anybody else experienced the same? If so what can I do? I am so depressed over this. Has taken over my life and pain meds (oxycodone) do not help at all. Please contact me at email address Please contact me at email address. I hate Humira and Docs that gave it to me. I am glad it works on most. Doc says 98% of patients have no problem, well it's not 100%. Guess where I and others like me fall. M 52 1 days
