HUMIRA  (ADALIMUMAB):  Adalimumab is used to reduce pain and swelling due to certain types of arthritis (such as rheumatoid, psoriatic, juvenile idiopathic, ankylosing spondylitis). This medication is also used to treat certain skin disorders (such as plaque-type psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa). It works by blocking a protein (tumor necrosis factor or TNF) found in the body's immune system that causes joint swelling and damage in arthritis as well as red scaly patches in psoriasis. Adalimumab belongs to a class of drugs known as TNF blockers. By reducing joint swelling, this medication helps to reduce further joint damage and preserve joint function. Adalimumab is also used to treat certain bowel conditions (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis) and a certain eye disease (uveitis).    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  Severe crohns Exhaustion, depression, dizziness, feeling hot or cold, anxiety. The drug works better if taken before bedtime. It does not work as well if taken in the morning and more side effects are noticed during that day. They should make 2 20 mg pens as one dose so the pressure would be lessened and patientd could take one in each leg or multiple injection sites. 40mg is too much and is usually painful from the amount of pressure under the skin. The injection pain causes short term delays in medication, such as "one more day" and likely millions of sicker patients, not to mention patients taking less medication which stockholder and politicians dont like. They should also make 10 mg pens so people can take different dose amounts other than 40mg. I would prefer attempting 20 or 30mg per week when my health is good and maybe taking an extra 10 mg when i have flare ups. The cost for this medication is absolutely outrageous and for such a price, there should be these improvements being made. Many insurance companies make it very difficult to get, especially the third party "specialty" companies. They often tell you it is in the mail and you are waiting by the door only to discover that they lost your prescription and now you need another one and a prior authorization which will take another week to process. I believe the horrendous service by these companies is an effort to save money at the expense of patients. humiria assistance is a blessing. Everyone should get it even if the company does it to decrease public outrage over their M 32 8 years

2  Boils Everything was great until I got a rash. The rash ended up being a fungal infection. It quickly spread throughout my body eventually causing extreme pain and hair loss. I've been fighting this infection fit 3 months so far and still not cleared up. It worked great clearing up the boils, but in no way is it worth the side effects! F 37 1 years

1  Psoriasis Head to toe pimply rash. Ungodly itch from the pimples. Serious Joint pain. Nose has been so stuffy I'm forced to use nose spray. Weird sore throat deep down at vocal cord area. Went back to dermatologist, I'm off the Humira, I'm positive it's Humira related. He seems to think I may have developed pustular psoriasis. I've no answers for certain, but here's my advice. DON'T TAKE THIS DRUG! Scary stuff F 59 2 months

2  SAPHO syndrome; atypical RA Extreme joint pain & swelling in joints previously unaffected prior to Humira. Initially, some minor nasal congestion. 2-6" inch hive @ injection site that would last 1-2 days. Fatigue & "loss of self" from Humira or pain? Strongly opposed starting biologics since initial dx in 2008. Side fx of potential cancer & serious infection (I am a veterinarian, so exposed to alot of stuff from my furry patients). Switched rheums 4X because of feeling pressured to start w/ no other alternatives being offered. Finally caved after an ankle flare that I've lived with for almost a year (of varying degrees). Previously a hiker & motorcyclist. Ankle nixed my active lifestyle. So caved & started Humira. Did nothing for the ankle (steroid injection did. Never offered by my rheum but said it was a good idea after I told him I was doing it). Did wonders for chest pain, but then the knee, toe, shoulder issues began about 4 months into Humira. Currently have taken time off work because I can't walk, let alone work. Went to rheum yest asked if Humira could be responsible. Seemed unconvinced & wants to switch to Enbrel. Really? My rheum believes that my newly inflamed joints are in no way related to Humira, despite it being a known adverse fx reported to the FDA. Perhaps it's time to find my 5th rheum. Have an appt w/ integrative med doc in 1 month. Perhaps this will open doors to some other options. I refuse to accept that this is just the way it's going to be. Remember, only you know your body & no 2 are alike. You have to be your own advocate. F 45 5 months

1  Crohns colitis Basal cell carcinoma, micronodular (this started just after loading dose and initially had the appearance of acne), extreme fatague, bone pain, night sweats, fevers, elevated WBC, depression, and memory loss IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING THAT APPEARS TO BE ACNE BE SURE TO HAVE IT CHECKED BY A DERMATOLOGIST IF YOU ARE TAKING IT FOR SKIN ISSUES AND THE DRUG WAS PRESCRIBED BY YOUR CURRENT DERMATOLOGIST BE SURE TO GET A SECOND OPINION. THIS DRUG CAN CAUSE SKIN CANCER. My doctor pressured me to get off of steroids and take this drug. I wish I had stood my ground and never taken this drug. I now have to have a disfiguring MOHs surgery to remove the cancer from my face. I hope that discontinuing the drug will decrease or eliminate my other symptoms. F 49 13 months

2  Ankylosing Spondylitis Within 2 hours of each injection I would sleep so soundly I was not wakened even by drilling in the next room. I generally wanted to do nothing but sleep for about 36 hours after each injection and overall I was unnaturally sleepy and fatigued while on the medication. For the first 2 days after each injection I experienced burning joints and a flu-like feeling with more prominent pain in my lower back and wrists. It was a relief to stop and "wake up". The only positive symptom was experiencing less nausea than prior to treatment. F 48 8 weeks

3  Psoriatic Arthritis Psoriasis Fatigue first few days to a week after dose. Hot flashes. Night sweats. Anxiety and Mood changes a few days after dose. Stuffy nose a few days after dose. Bleeding under skin on arms. Flu like feeling. Side effects progressively getting worse after every dose. Have psoriasis on 90% of body before Humira. Psoriasis a little better after first month. By 3 months most skin on face, legs, abdomen cleared about 40%. Skin on back and upper legs hasn't changed much. Injection pen hurts A LOT. I feel no difference in joints or body pain. I feel rather ill and tired most of the time since starting Humira F 62 3 months

1  Psoriasis Worked on psoriasis. Appears to have fostered leukemia. Psoriasis is a real pain. Leukemia is a likely a death sentence. I will take psoriasis any day over leukemia. Worked very well controlling psoriasis. However, as the TV ads say, "side affects may include chronic lymphocytic leukemia...". On my first visit to a well respected oncologist he asked what meds I was taking. When I said "Humira", he replied "get off that immediately, throw anything you have away, don't ever take it again".  5  Psoriatic Arthritis Suffered with chronic sinus infections which I attributed to humira, other than that nothing to really speak of It has worked wonders in both the joint pain issues and skin issues. Would recommend it to anyone suffering with psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis. It is very costly and you will definitely have to have insurance to afford it. M 54 10 years

4  PsA None so far Noticed immediate improvement in joint pain and the numbness from the carpal tunnel caused by the PsA. Expected the injection (pen) to be painful based upon the doctor saying it's the most painful of the injections but felt nothing with my first two injections. Happy so far. F 57 2 weeks

Went Dr and sent for chest X-Ray told stop injection until results back. I have no energy at all. Sweating night and day, feel anxious/depressed generally unwell. F 54 2 years
