| 1 | Pneumonia & Cold/Vomit Syndrome | Extreme stomach pain & nausea; fatigue and depression; confusion and inability to focus; feeling hungry, but unable to eat hardly anything; again, extremely bad stomach pain; and finally, constipation-(I know, hard to believe the last one). | Erythromycin was prescribe for me by my doctor after he diagnosed me with a bacterial infection he called cough & vomit syndrome, which had developed into pneumonia. I'm an asthma patient, so I take any type of pneumonia very seriously. My doctor warned me that after taking the erythromycin, I would likely feel some stomach cramping, but he didn't warn me I might feel like I was going to die from it. He prescribed 500mg x 3 daily for a week, but after just 2 days the side-effects of the medication are much worse than the pain caused by the pnemonia. I feel horrible. I'm stopping the erythromycin, and will be taking Levaquin instead; it's quite a bit more expensive than erythromycin, but I don't have to miss work when taking it. | F | 39 | 2 days | 2/4/2009 | 5 | post-operative wound infection | Terrible trapped wind and bloating. My doctor made it plain that there wasn't an alternative short of intravenous medication as an inpatient. After the first hour of my first pill my stomach just started gargling, and I slept only a few hours that night because my stomach just kept growling at me, saying it was hungry...and I woke up literally dripping in sweat like I had gone swimming at around 4 AM. The next day was TERRIBLE. I took the first pill with a meal, then thirty minutes later my stomach is growling. A PAINFUL growling, like I hadn't eaten in three days. So I try to eat, then I just feel nauseous, running to the toilet constantly thinking I was going to throw up, going number 2 more so than normal, constantly just wanting to SLEEP or do nothing, always feeling spacey and mixing up words when I try to talk. I was dreading taking the next two pills, and I regretted it that night when I was curled up in a little ball holding my stomach crying. PAIN all over. Only one day of nausea because I hadn't eaten much, but instantly felt better after eating. One curious side effect: I have swollen gums! I'm not sure where this came from, or how it developed, but I'm keeping an eye on it. The frequent urination stopped as soon as i stopped taking erythromycin. But the other symptoms are much slower at disappearing. I also feel sooooo tired. I sleep for 8 or 12 hours and get up even more tired than before. The doctor assures me that the effects will wear off but he cannot tell me when.
