| 4 | Severe Chest Infection | My side effects are exactly as most other people on this site - Severe stabbing stomach discomfort followed by diarhea. I completed a week's course of these tablets 4 days ago, but I was worried that Iv'e now started to expreience severe back ache (whch I understand from reading this site, is also a common side effect of this drug). Can anyone give me some comfort as to how long these side effects will last now that I'm off the drug! The chest infection has cleared -Almost, but I really would think twice about taking Erythromycin again. It is like having stomach cramps non stop for 5 hours. PID | Horrendous nausea and vomitting, headaches, flu like symptoms, shortness of breath and panic attacks. | Had taken this antibiotic a couple of years ago and suffered with a little mild nausea but nothing could prepare me for the effects this time round. The nausea was constant even after the continous vomitting. Then the evening of the first day i was taking it i developed a tight chest and shortness of breath, feeling unable to breathe led to a full on panic attack which obviously didn't help the shortness of breath. Day 2 was much of the same, and by lunchtime i'd called the doctor who told me to stop taking it. When talking to a friend who is a pharmicist he informed me that most people struggle with this antibiotic, which makes me wonder why doctors are so keen to prescribe it?! I was prescribed 333 MG 3x a day. Abdominal Pain, general to acute. No Vomiting or Diarrhea. (well one minor vomit, but attribute it to mega-cough fit) | -----Know bad reaction as I had to take this for Acne when I was young, got caught without health insurance between jobs (I'll be covered just about the time I'll be over this-- such is life). Never settled well with me, thought I would tough it out. Probably shouldn't have. ----- Made sure to eat and drink with each dose, usually a sports drink followed by a little water. It was a bit hard to get it all down. I've also started using gas-x strips to hold off the gas build up -- it didn't cure it, but it did take the edge off. ----- Don't forget you're sick, the E-mycin is roughing up you tummy but the coughing and hacking isn't making you stomach any happier either. ----- Major suggestions that are working for me: 1)Gas-x or other gas reducer 2)NO tight pants! IF your at home lose 'em completely. 3)Eat a little bit all day to keep you stomach busy dealing with something, vs making trouble........Good Luck! | M | 36 | 7 days | 3/20/2009 | 1 | Chest and nose infection | I was prescribed 500mg ones, I am 26 weeks pregnant. After taking the first tablet I started to feel real bad hunger pangs, which I ignored, I just wanted the sinus pain to go away to continued to take the tablets. I have had 5 tablets now and have severe stomach cramps, nausea, being sick. Feel 10 x worse than before I even started to take them. I can not keep any food down even though i'm starving. The cramps are so painful. The cramping in my stomach started this morning, thought it was hunger pains until I tried to eat something. Within 10 mins I was being sick. Same thing happened around lunch time, I managed to eat a piece of bread and within half an hour started to be sick again. I've been back and forwards to the loo now to vomit 6 times since 1pm. Was prescribed this yesterday 250mg take 2 twice a day!!! I was short of breath and had chest pains. The extreme nausea started about 4 hours later to the point nearly all night I was wretching but not actually sick. Also very bad diorreah which ended up extremely orange and frothy. This continued throughout the night. And by then very painful. Pains in my stomach which were truly unbearable - admittedly my constant cough gradually died throughout the night and the pain in my chest but... apart from everything else I was extremely cold then unbearably hot - I seemed completely 'out of it'!!! I did sleep alot (thankfully) but the dreams were absolutely awful - I awoke panicky and sweating, feeling dreadfully weak!!! I did take 2 more again at 10pm and very reluctantly again 2 more 5am this morning - but it was all getting worse the more I took,I thought they were a reaction to me not a general condition that most people seem to experience. I was also given 2 boxe | I could not face taking anymore. I have this eve spoken to another Duty Doc and she said straight away to stop taking them and to pick up a prescrip for something diff in morning. Reading through these comments there seems to be very few people who can tolerate them. Never again!!! I must admit it is now 12 hours since taking them and my chest/throat is getting bad again but I won't want to take them ever again for the sake of getting rid of the illness only to have to endure all that those tabs give you back!!! | F | 54 | 1 days | 3/3/2009 | 4 | Roseaca | hunger pains, stomach pains, gas pains, bloating/swelling feeling of having to go #2 almost all the time, when I do need to go I find it hard sometimes like the muscles are weak. Most recently urinating sometimes feels weak and sleep is being effected | I am on my 4th 30day run for my roseaca, I dont like taking it so I try to space my usage out. It has worked well in clearing it up and the side effects arent as bad as some of the other meds ive been given. But each time ive gone on the this stuff the side effects get worse and come on faster. At first it was just hunger pains, then the stomach and gas pains came, then it was the bloating need to go to the bathroom feeling. This most recent time urinating and sleep are being affected, sometime when needing to urinate it feels like I had held it for sometime, in general all the muscles in my lower abdominal area just feel tired, and I keep waking up during the night and have trouble getting back to sleep. If I skip a pill the tired feeling starts to go away and I feel normal again. During the day this became severe, very yellow diarrhea. I subsequently almost went into a coma that night and was hospitalised for three days with a skyrocketing white blood cell count. | I was an extremely healthy and active (competitive swimmer) 16 year old but somehow contracted pneumonia. I was given erythromycin to take, which I did for two weeks. It cleared up the pneumonia but at the end of the two weeks almost killed me. Also have a continuos ravenuous hunger, it feels as if my stomach is completely empty even if I have just eaten a couple of hours previously. I experienced only one 'spacey' episode one night but that might have been because I had drunk some alcohol (not much). | The tablets have worked I think, because my phlebitis does seem to be clearing now (also taking Diclofenac anti-inflammatories). I am glad I didn't suffer the same dreadful effects that others describe but the wind and diahrrea/constipation symptoms make me feel very uncomfortable, I will be glad to stop taking this drug soon. | F | 35 | 5 days | 2/18/2009 | 1 | Dental drainage mandibular abscess | Blurry vision. Mostly diarrhoea, with incredibly painful burning sensation just after going. Thick heavy saliva which was very uncomfortable. Weak limbs. Somewhat extreme balance loss, at times I was scared to go downstairs in case I lost my balance and fell. Nose bleeding which I am still suffering from now and again when I blow my nose even a week and a half after being off the drugs. Kidney pain was the worst part of it, it really scared me so I ended up stopping taking the last day and a half of the course. 8 x Erythromycin a day really messed me up, along with 3 x Metronidazole which I don't think helped much either. | Horrible drug, ran my emotions ragged and seriously messed my mind about, and the bleeding from the nose when I blow my nose is worrying due to being off the drugs for about a week and a half, I will be mentioning it to the doctors when I go later in the week. I had no choice it seems but to use this drug, since I am allergic to penicillin but I would never want to repeat them, they were horrendous. | M | 30 | 5 days | 2/17/2009 | 1 | Campylobacter | I was given Erythromycin as Campylobacter still showed up after a course of penicillin. I was warned that I might experience stomach cramps but I was totally unprepared for all the other symptoms. I had lower stomach cramps (like severe period pains) within a few minutes of taking each tablet. The pains eventually subsided but returned immediately I took my next tablet. The cramps were also associated with diarrhoea and wind far worse than previously. I decided to persevere but within a day or two I began to feel very lethargic and completely lost the little appetite I had. The thought and sight of food made me nauseous. After 3-4 days, I developed a painful rib cage (front and back) and found it very difficult to take a deep breath without extreme discomfort. It felt as though the whole of my upper body had been kicked in and there was a tightness in the upper part of my diaphragm. I felt so ill that I had to return to my bed and just wanted to sleep all the time. The doctor adv | F | 59 | 5 days | 2/15/2009 | 1 | septic tonsolitus | sometimes i get stomach pain and i have no energy at all to walk around not even in the house, i feel like its a huge challenge just to do that, i have nausea constantly, when i have to eat for my tablet i struggle, i have no appetite what so ever, and the biggest migraine ive ever had in my life. i also feel dizzy. my throat is a about 50% better after 4 days. and now other side is hurting a little. also going hot and cold, i feel my forehead and its burning up, although i feel nice and cosy in my dressing gown! | i felt better before i took them, all i had to put up with then was the pain of swallowing, the taste and smell. not sure id want to have that rather than this though, it really hurts ( the puss on my tonsil) but this isnt good either. only take this if you have to. | F | 18 | 7 days | 2/15/2009 | 3 | Lower lung infection | I was given this because the infection has fought off two weeks each of amoxycillin and augmentin. Oh my God! A feeling of wind trapped in my lower chest / upper stomach that is going to explode but it's not really going anywhere. In the noght I felt so poorly too - imagine the worst hangover of your life. Full body misery and close to tears. Chucked my guts up after dinner and at 4am. Am only on my third day. just got up and took two tablets - that took some real willpower. Am going to see the doctor in a bit.
