3  GERD heartburn I have been getting concerned about certain symptoms that I have been getting lately. Firstly, I had started getting a rapid heart rate on and off throughout the day that I never had before. I wear a Fitbit and I monitored my heart rate which clearly showed it went to a perfect resting rate to over 100 beats for no reason. I am a healthy person who exercises and never had this before. The other symptom is sore joints. It started with lower back and now it is so sore on my shoulder blade and under my upper arms. It is affecting my daily routine and is quite disturbing. I take one pill every evening and it helps with my GERD but can these symptoms really be coming from this medication? I just recently had my yearly physical but now I feel worse. than ever!!  1  GERD Anxiety, difficulty breathing, tremors and shaking. Stomach pain , irritability, suicidal thoughts. After a week and a half of taking famotidine my symptoms went from bad to worse. I couldn't figure out what was happening to me so by the time I figured out it was the med I was in a full blown anxiety crisis. My doctor told me to go to the ER immediately and called poison control. By the time I got to the ER my whole body was shaking. It is now 4 hours later and a shot of advant helped me sleep through the worst of it. I thought I was going insane. HOW IS THIS MEDICATION STILL ON THE SHELF! M 42 8 days

4  GERD It has helped with the GERD BUT, I have horrible anxiety, feeling impeding doom, heart palpitations, feeling depressed for no reason, no sex drive(sorry), just absolutely not feeling like myself. Went on meds for anxiety did nothing for me. After reading everyone's side effects I'm convinced that this drug is the devil! HORRIBLE for mental health but, good for GERD! F 46 5 months

1  Acid Reflux Chest pain, increased acid reflux, numbness and tingling in fingers and toes, heart palpitations, anxiety, dizziness, confusion, lethargy, tightness in chest/lungs, muscle weakness I suffer from stress induced gets/acid reflux, 1 day before taking myself into the ER for heart palpitations i took a chewable Pepcid Complete for my heartburn. 2pm the next day i had to rush myself to the ER and after doing an EKG the doctors said I had AFIB and my heart rate was 187 BPM when I stopped looking at the monitor. I was admitted to the hospital and spent the next 2 days being closely monitored. Without having any idea what caused my palpitations, I was given Pepcid with Propranolol to help with acid reflux and palpitations. Every time i would drift off to sleep, i would wake myself up holding my breath. I also felt super weak like my body was shutting down. When I was admitted at the hospital I didn't think much about my symptoms but I had to switch from Prilosec to Pepcid again yesterday and experienced the same thing so I must be one of the unfortunate 1%ers who gets the worst of the worst side effects. Most recently I took Pepcid at 5pm on 10/21/21, 30 min after I felt EXTREMELY bloated and uncomfortable. Once I got home I ate dinner slowly around 6 & continued to have heartburn until about 11am after drinking some hemp milk & was able to fall asleep for a solid 30 minutes before waking up with horrible heart palpitations and holding my breath (apnea) that almost sent me to the ER again, and I continued to have a panic attack until about 3 am. It is now 3:14pm 10/22/21, 22 hours since my last dose of Pepcid & I feel l F 29 3 days

1  Gastritis Awful racing heart, anxiety, panic attacks, lump in throat, diarrhoea, nausea. After weaning myself off it has taken months to get over this awful drug. I now use apple cider vinegar in water and apple juice to help with my indigestion. The indigestion has improved but the anxiety well that just would not go. I have been seeing a psychologist for the last 2 months and can now say that the anxiety is finally under control. I wanted to reassure you all who have been suffering after taking this that there is light at the end of a very long tunnel. Please try alternative medicine, meditation and maybe think about seeking help with a psychologist, it works. I feel normal for the first time. This nightmare started last October when I was put on PPIs for gastritis. They gave me terrible side effects but did not work it out until December. The GP would not believe me so had to go private. Was then changed to Famotidine (Pepcid) then had to gradually wean off. Eventually got off them in April and it has taken until now to get over the long lasting effects of that terrible drug!! Do not stay on this if you are getting bad side effects. Do not be told that you are imagining it and that you are psychotic, it is your body and you know when something is wrong. This drug destroys lives. F 63 3 months

1  GERD Burning all over body, depersonalization, derealization, extreme anxiety, chills, hot flashes, agitation, dizziness, feeling of impending doom Like many others here, I took a single dose to help with my GERD. I was having excess saliva production that was worrying me, so I thought instead of Tums I would take Pepcid. I had an extreme reaction about an hour after taking it. I started feeling dizzy and delirious about an hour after taking and laid down. I suddenly felt extreme burning all over my body and a prickly feeling, and I thought I was experiencing symptoms of multiple sclerosis. I was feeling extremely panicked and agitated and nearly had a panic attack due to the strange psychological effects. I had experienced similar symptoms during protracted benzodiazepine withdrawal, so I was familiar with how to handle these kinds of episodes. I found the rare symptoms of Pepcid and realized I am one of those unlucky few that have this extreme allergic/neurological reaction to this medication. Once I found this forum I realized that what was happening was not life threatening and was able to wait it out and make a recovery plan. Time, rest, social support, and some good food go a long way. It took about 6 hours for the initial panic to wear off and for the waves of burning sensation to cease. It took another 48 hours or so to feel back to normal again. There was a ramp of dissociation and depersonalization that slowly improved as time passed. Get rest, try to eat, and remember this is an allergic reaction to a medication that is not appropriate for you. It works for most people, just not us. M 39 1 days

1  Acid Reflux Anxiety, depression, dry mouth, muscle aches , loss of appetite, cough Never again! Couldn't believe this medicine could cause these side effects. And it doesn't sound like they are so rare. I thought I was dying. Kept trying to stick it out but couldn't take it anymore. Never experienced these feelings before and hope I don't ever again. My husband was trying to figure out what was going on & I couldn't explain it to him. Stopped the famotidine and 2 days later a lot of the anxiety and depression was gone (not all). Husband said he saw a big improvement. 3rd day had a little of it back along with headache, fatigue, and upset stomach. Having some heartburn that I didn't have before. Hopefully I feel back to completely normal soon. Can't believe you can buy this OTC. F 56 14 days

1  Excess stomach acid Works as an acid reducer but after taking this a few days it builds up and I start to feel very weird!. Anxiety, can't concentrate, face tingling, just an overall odd perception of surroundings can't really explain & have tried this drug several times and each time does the same thing after a few days of taking. Takes 2 or 3 days after stopping to get back to normal. F 53 5 days

1  Gastritis Within a few hours of taking it at night, I've had severe chest pains like a major panic attack. Went to the ER and found nothing, but sent me to my cardiologist for a follow up. My boss who is a nurse had recommended I take Nexium and Pepcid for my stomach pain you too major stress. My insomnia and panic attacks have only gotten worse. After finding this thread and a few others, I will definitely be stopping this medication. After finding this thread and a few others, I will definitely be stopping this medication. F 56 12 days

1  Possible acid reflux I originally went into hospital thinking that I have acid reflux. After a scope done it was found that I didn't. I started noticing that my appetite was suppressed, I was very nauseous, and feeling full even when I hadn't eaten. I found out that the culprit was Pepcid. I went to ER and told them it had to be the Pepcid, as I'm on my regular medications (have been for years) with no problems. I wouldn't recommend this medication as it causes stomach problems, very bad nausea, and feeling sick and weird. F 2 weeks

4  Gerd Nausea, cold-like symptoms, fatigue, bad stomach I think it's OK. Yes, there are side effects, but not as bad as the GERD. I have Bi Polar and GAD.I didn't notice any additional anxiety. The thing is you definitely know you are taking Pepcid, and not in a pleasant way. Not of the acid reduction medications are nice, you take them because there is a severe problem. Stick with it for more than a day before dropping a review for goodness sake M 42 28 days

1  Possible stomach Ulcers My doctor recommended this drug for a possible stomach ulcer. This is my first night taking it and the first night in weeks i haven't had any stomach pain. However!!!! I literally just woke up out my sleep. It's 11:39pm. I woke up feeling funny, very drowsy, confused feeling , slight shortness of breath with a headache. I thought I would look up the side effects cause I've never felt like this before. By the grace of God i came across this thread. Im shocked at all the comments and this drug still being on the market. I will definitely be telling all my friends and family to stay away from this "drug."Ě F 42 1 days

2  Esophagitis/LPR Debilitating fatigue, extreme lethargy, depression, anxiety, joint pain, severe mood swings, flu-like all over, tight throat. I was put on a ppi after my dx, but the side effects were horrendous. I couldnít tolerate them, so was told to try Pepcid. It worked well at first, with no major side effects. I was so relieved. But around Week 3, I did start feeling the side effects I listed Ö and each week got worse. Iíve never had depression/anxiety issues before and am not taking anything else. I finally had to stop taking these yesterday. I really donít know where to go from here, to heal my esophagitis and help with LPR. Itís scary and Iím tired of the pain on and off the meds. I wish there was an acid reducer I could tolerate. F 49 7 weeks

1  Bloating Dizziness, Anxiety, Weak, Palpation, Erratic Pulse So, I honestly don't know what to say because they wouldn't allow the words I truly want to type. Anyway, had stomach issues "bloating" and was recommended Pepcid. I took it and on about the 3rd day I felt horrible anxiety, my heart rate was up and down "quickly", heart skipping and although I can't say it's related my legs, especially my calves just felt week. Having some tingling feeling as well. Again not sure if those 2 are related.. Sort of dizzy or unstable. Like so many I already have anxiety which makes me wonder if it affects us that have anxiety worse. Either way I am off the crap and while still not 100% I do think each day might be a little better. If this has all been cause by this product they can stick it somewhere. If anyone needs to contact me you are most welcome. God Bless. M 54 5 days

PEPCID  (FAMOTIDINE):  Famotidine is used to treat ulcers of the stomach and intestines and to prevent intestinal ulcers from coming back after they have healed. This medication is also used to treat certain stomach and throat (esophagus) problems (such as erosive esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease-GERD, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome). It works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach makes. It relieves symptoms such as cough that doesn't go away, stomach pain, heartburn, and difficulty swallowing. Famotidine belongs to a class of drugs known as H2 blockers. This medication is also available without a prescription. It is used to prevent and treat heartburn and other symptoms caused by too much acid in the stomach (acid indigestion). If you are taking this medication for self-treatment, it is important to read the manufacturer's package instructions carefully so you know when to consult your doctor or pharmacist.   (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)
