PEPCID  (FAMOTIDINE):  Famotidine is used to treat ulcers of the stomach and intestines and to prevent intestinal ulcers from coming back after they have healed. This medication is also used to treat certain stomach and throat (esophagus) problems (such as erosive esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease-GERD, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome). It works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach makes. It relieves symptoms such as cough that doesn't go away, stomach pain, heartburn, and difficulty swallowing. Famotidine belongs to a class of drugs known as H2 blockers. This medication is also available without a prescription. It is used to prevent and treat heartburn and other symptoms caused by too much acid in the stomach (acid indigestion). If you are taking this medication for self-treatment, it is important to read the manufacturer's package instructions carefully so you know when to consult your doctor or pharmacist.   FDA Approval Date: 1986-10-15 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Heartburn Muscle pain, muscle weakness, anxiety, chest pain, pain all over body. It was scary experience I ever had. First time I took it as needed it gave me bad anxiety that I never had before. At that time i didn't know it was from pepcid. So I started taking it months later for my heartburn, I felt tingling and like ants crawling in my body. My fingers began to hurt and I tried to massage it but it turned purple went to er that day. Then a wk later my legs became weak I thought I was paralyzed and my body hurt all over. I took Tylenol and it helped but only stop the pain but doesn't get rid of it completely. It's been almost a month and it still didn't go away yet. So I'm trying out acupuncture now, hopefully this will help. Anyone else in this forum tried anything to help? And how long does it take for your body get back to normal? Please share F 40 10 days

2  Chronic nausea- Ulcerative colitis I used to take Pepcid for digestive issues in the 1990's. It ultimately stopped working for me and caused a pressure and tightening in my chest, hours after taking it. It took me a long while to connect the Pepcid to the symptom. I stopped taking it several years ago. After experiencing worsening chronic nausea recently, my GI doctor's PA suggested trying Pepcid for a couple weeks. I recalled I had a problem with it, but it was a vague memory and I couldn't remember exactly what the side effect was years ago. So, I tried the Pepcid and then I had that feeling like a knot in my chest the next day. I tend not to do well with antacids in general. My husband has acid reflux and said he'd give the Pepcid a try, it has worked very well for him so far. I was hopeful about trying the Pepcid again, after years of not using it. I'm sure it works very well for some people, as it has for my husband. I have found that most antacids catch up to me the next day and I'm better overall avoiding them. I do have multiple GI issues and also a 2 auto-immune disorders. Everyones different, I'd certainly give Pepcid a try and see if it works for you. F 60 20 years

5  Gerd Allergies None. This helps me tremendously. Not only does it help my GERD but I breathe better, probably due to the fact it is a H2 blocker antihistamine and it helps my anxiety tremendously! This stuff is awesome! I would highly recommend it. I have been using it for more than a year and recently I stopped it for 2 weeks and felt awful but not any worse than when I wasn't taking it several years ago. After restarting it I immediately felt better. M 58 2 years

1  Acid Reflux EXTREME anxiety, depression bouts, agitation, headaches, fatigue, muscle aches, peeling of the skin. I was prescribed Pepcid on April 8th by my doctor and on May 13th I woke up with the worst panic attack I've ever experienced. I wasn't sure where it was coming from, I was even extremely fatigued. I've been dealing with this since and had to even be put on intermittent FMLA at work because my anxiety is through the roof. I just discovered this site today and I'm in shock. I had no idea this medicine could do so much harm. I will be stopping today as I did take 20mg this morning and instantly made my anxiety worse as well as horrible stomach pain. I'm really hoping that once I stop that these side effects go away. I've never had anxiety like this before ever. I just feel like I'm not the same. It makes me feel somewhat better knowing that I may have found the cause of my anxiety. I hope that anyone who is taking this medicine and is dealing with these side effects finds this page. Best of luck to all of you reading this. F 27 2 months

1  Possible GERD I started taking famotidine last year as needed and don't really remember any side effects.... Until the beginning of this year. I was at work and felt chest tightness and dizziness. Then during a company meeting I felt as though I was going to pass out. It was scary! I experienced most of the side effects people on here described, I would wake up at 5am restless and shaky. I'd feel off and not like myself, sometimes even sad almost to tears for no reason. Then I saw this site and realized, like all of you, that I'm not losing my mind! I'll be stopping and going a different route for my heartburn. M 39 0 days

1  LPR, I have LPR so I was prescribed Omeprazole 40mg . I was hesitant for a long time about taking it. On and off I would take the medication. I would take 1 week then stop . A month later a few days and stop . Finally May 4th I took it and stayed on until May 13th. Afterward I decided to take the Pepcid. First week or so I was fine, the second week I started to feel my anxiety and other horrible side effects. I've had bad anxiety early this year but finally got control of things . This medicine heightens it . Muscle cramps, nauseous, discomfort in my chest, burning sensation in my chest . 27 19 days

3  GERD Pepcid has worked well to control my GERD, however it has caused extreme constipation, stomach discomfort and, I'm just now realizing, anxiety, heart palpitations, restless sleep and a feeling of general unease. I have also had increased back pain for the past couple of weeks, but I cannot be sure this was directly related to the Pepcid. Feeling crazy is not worth the reduced GERD symptoms! F 42 2 weeks

1  Gerd I was taking this medication for Acid Reflux. I experienced constant constipation, heart racing, severe chest pain, muscle aches and anxiety. I had the worst nightmares too. I realize now after reading other people reviews, that all those things was due to taking this medication. At times I literally felt like I was dying slowly to an unknown cause. I have stopped taking it. I will try to continue losing weight with the hope that my reflux issues will go away on it's own due to weight loss. Also, Forgot to mention stomach cramped and hurt daily with this medication. I do not recommend this to anyone. F 47 6 months

1  Reflux possible ulcer Eyes and face burning! Palpitations, and anxiety through the roof!! I was online trying to see if Pepcid could make my eyes and face burn. I stumbled upon this website and started reading all the reviews. I have been having crazy high anxiety!!! I suffer from anxiety already and take medication as needed. But after reading, I realized the Pepcid was causing my increased symptoms. I am so relieved to have found out why. I never would have put it together. No more Pepcid for me! F 58 14 days

1  Gerd after quitting nicotine Within an hour of taking one dose I experience a full blown uncontrollable panic attack. I have suffered on and off throughout my life with panic attacks but this was a whole other thing. My entire body went ice cold and started convulsing, then i started sweating, my heart bpm went over 100 (typical resting is 62), I had a horrible sense of Doom, literally felt like I was dying, I was so nauseous I could barely walk, then my whole body started burning like fire and I was sweating but my fiancee said I was cold to the touch. Checked my temp it was 97.6, I had trouble breathing and couldn't concentrate. It was one of the most severe attacks I've had in years. It lasted over an hour and then randomly stopped. I then tried to eat some oatmeal and the moment I started eating it all started up again for another hour. It stopped again and I went to bed exhausted at 5am. I woke up two hours later at 7am with my heart racing and my body convulsing and it took another hour for it to stop. This time I took licorice root and it seemed to stop it faster and make me feel normal again. I would have NEVER taken this if I knew it would do this to me. I am prone to anxiety and panic with my disorder but it's managed. M 36 1 days
