PEPCID  (FAMOTIDINE):  Famotidine is used to treat ulcers of the stomach and intestines and to prevent intestinal ulcers from coming back after they have healed. This medication is also used to treat certain stomach and throat (esophagus) problems (such as erosive esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease-GERD, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome). It works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach makes. It relieves symptoms such as cough that doesn't go away, stomach pain, heartburn, and difficulty swallowing. Famotidine belongs to a class of drugs known as H2 blockers. This medication is also available without a prescription. It is used to prevent and treat heartburn and other symptoms caused by too much acid in the stomach (acid indigestion). If you are taking this medication for self-treatment, it is important to read the manufacturer's package instructions carefully so you know when to consult your doctor or pharmacist.   FDA Approval Date: 1986-10-15 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  Heartburn/reflux Even though it does seem to help reflux, I feel weak, lightheaded, nauseous and have muscle discomfort in my back and sometimes chest. It's hard to believe it's from this drug but I'm suspicious that it is. Wish I knew what to take to help me as I can't take any of the "ozoles." Chewables don't seem to help much. F 68 1 weeks

1  LPR (silent reflux) Total body pins and needles along with burning feeling, extreme nausea and lack of appetite This drug is absolutely awful. I knew it was making me incredibly nauseas and resulted in me having almost no appetite. It was helping with my LPR so I was willing to stick with it for a little while longer even though it was making me feel absolutely sickly. After taking it for two weeks though I experienced a night of feeling like my entire body was on fire. I burned/tingled from head to toe. I stopped taking the Pepcid and gradually over the past five days the tingling/burning has gone away. It went from my whole body, to just my lower arms/legs and hands/feet to yesterday only tingling in my pinky. Today (5 days after last Pepcid dose) I have zero tingling and only a spot or two that still feels off (almost like I left an ice pack on too long). I was terrified that this was something far more sinister but my doctor ran a bunch of blood work (which came back normal) and said to give it a full two weeks for the drug to clear my system and any minor nerve damage to be repaired before I needed to go see a neurologist. Low and behold five days after discontinuing Pepcid I'm at the point where I wouldn't even notice the slightly off sensation that remains if I wasn't looking for it. I'm confident it will be fully gone tomorrow or the next day. And I have my appetite back, am no longer constantly nauseas, and have stopped losing weight (which was inadvertent from the lack of appetite/nausea and unnecessa F 33 14 days

1  Acid Reflux extreme anxiety, severe panic attacks, trembling, confusion, muscle spasms, weakness, back & neck pain I am so glad I found this thread! I seriously thought I was losing my mind. This medication gave me anxiety and extreme panic attacks multiple times in the 5 days I took this terrible medication. It has been very mentally exhausting and I thought about going to the ER a few times. I've had brain fog, confusion, and generally feeling out of my mind - I couldn't even remember the lyrics to my favorite songs. I have had muscle spasms and weakness, back and neck pain. Do not take this medication! This has been the worst experience of my life! F 25 5 days

1  Burning stomach Tachycardia, irregular heartbeat(skipping, fluttering etc) panic attacks. This drug left me unable to function. I finally realized maybe it could be the pepcid, stopped in and had great improvement in 2 or 3 days. However, I still had milder symptoms for about 4 more weeks. Drug works great for stomach problem but no way is it worth the side effects. Of course my doctor thinks I am crazy and that there was no correlation between pepcid and my symptoms. The same thing happened to me with Topral and Trazadone. Took me some time to realize the connection but after reading the posts on here, clearly I am not crazy. So sick if dictors that don't listen and don't care. F 58 30 days

1  Gastritis After taking Famotidine for 12 days I developed anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, lack of appetite, racing heart amongst other side effects. I have had awful dark thoughts.... my GP has had no understanding or compassion, at my worst I was told to call the Samaritans. I have weaned down to 2.5mg in the evening, as I drop down I stabilise for a couple of weeks before the anxiety etc came back. So drop down again. I am now off as of 2 days ago but the side effects are still awful. This drug needs to be explained to doctors so they are aware that it is not so rare to have these awful side effects. People should be warned what can happen. F 62 3 months

1  GERD, acid reflux Panic attacks, severe anxiety, brain fog Hi guys! I took Pepcid back in October for a few days and had a panic attack and ever since I have had pretty bad anxiety and depressive episodes and it's April! I've tried therapy but it's like I can't control what I feel and like it's not going to ever end and it's scary. I am skeptical about taking antidepressants because I am hoping it'll go away in a matter of time. I think PEPCID messed up something in my gut and if anyone can also relate or has any suggestions on how they got back to feeling normal after taking this medication, please email me!! I would greatly appreciate! F 21 3 days

1  Part of prescription for vertigo Severe chest pain (left side), numb extremities, light-headedness, anxiety, panick attacks, shortness of breath, tiredness, diarrhoea, restlesness I am absolutely shocked (and grateful) to find this forum. I am writing this to shed some light too on the many serious side effects of this drug. My diagnosis was not related to gastrointestinal matters, it simply started with positional vertigo without any other side symptoms. Went to ER and they performed a ECG on me assuring me the problem is not my heart nor neurological. The doctor prescribed me electrolytes (potassium and magnesium) alongsite Famotidine. I didn't understand this combination of drugs but I was told Famotidine would counter balance the side effects of the main prescribed drug and that i must take it for a long period of time even though I never had problems with acid reflux, nor was it directly proven I would have. Starting from the first day of treatment my vertigo was almost gone but instead of it I started having severe dizziness (permanent and different than the vertigo itself) , chest pain and all the above mentioned symptoms. I had diarrhoea in the first night and a feeling of fear that I could not control. The chest pain came and go, it was sharp and I could only think of a heart attack... It was actually a panic attack. Also I would cry uncontrollably and wake up scared from vivid nightmares all night long. It literally felt like dying for a couple more days. Yesterday I took one pill for the last time. I couldn't properly breathe for the whole day and I was convinced something horrible would happen. today I am here still having tingling an F 24 5 days

1  GERD I seriously thought i was losing it! I'm so glad i thought to check on the "rare" side effects with this med. Because this was literally the only thing that had changed & i had panic attacks, gloom, depression, completely out of left field! Contacted pharmacy they said it was rare, but could happen... no more for me,thanks, I'd rather deal with heartburn! This should be highlighted as a more frequent occurrence! F 45 12 days

1  Acid reflux, duodenal ulcer heart palpitations, extreme anxiety, depression, nervousness, headaches, ringing in ears, blurry vision, diarrhea, constipation, stomach aches after eating, and upon waking I think this medicine made my stomach worse off than it was when I started taking it. I took it for about 30 days and at first, started noticing that my acid was lowered for about two weeks and i pretty much stopped throwing up upon waking. Then it stopped working. My side effects were getting worse and worse as I used this medicine. I decided to stop taking it 3 days ago and no more stomach aches. No more anxiety or other horrible side effects. They are seemingly going away. No more acid in the morning either which is weird. I got prescribed this with carafate to treat a duodenal ulcer and stop my acid. A specialist might have misdiagnosed me with IBS after telling him how I was doing while taking this medicine. I am not an expert but I know my body so I am just telling my personal story because all of these helped me. F 22 30 days

1  Esophegitus/heart burn Trouble breathing, as in perpetually feeling short of breath, feeling need to keep taking deep breaths due to shortness of breath; low level anxiety; rebound heartburn upon stopping medication. About 2.5 weeks after starting this developed shortness of breath. Horrible! Took me days to realize it's the medicine. I've never written a med review, but this medicine, famatodine/pepcid is simply horrible. Not feeling like getting enough air is torture. And it's been constant. I don't even have asthma. Stopped taking this yesterday morning. Still short of breath but better than it was yesterday. Rebound heartburn is pretty bad, constant, but I'll take my chances with stuff like tums or baking soda. Side effects...listed as rare, but apparently they are not...are NOT worth it. M 49 21 days

1  Acid reflux Panic, severe anxiety, derealization and upper back pain. So glad I found this page. I have a panic disorder but manage it. Lately has been horrible to the point I've almost gone to the er and can't go to work. Family has had to help me a lot. Stopped taking a couple days ago and did research as I couldn't figure out any other differences in my life right now. Hoping this wears down soon, it's been awful! F 38 2 months

2  GERD / GASTRITIS I follow a vegetarian diet but I do drink milk and eat eggs and pretty good amount of fiber each day . My diet is pretty bland in general . I I had a sore throat that would not go away so I saw an ENT doctor and he did a scope of my throat and said I had severe inflammation and two ulcers. So I had an upper endoscopy so I was extremely surprised when I received the diagnosis of GERD is I have absolutely no history of any kind of acid or stomach problems . Right from the beginning I had burning sensations in my arms and shoulders. They would diminish a bit in the afternoon but restart again the next day. I wasn't aware of any burning feelings during the night . I also felt brain fog or disconnected from myself and my environment. During the day I didn't feel hungry but I could eat if I made myself something to eat. I have been trying to gain some weight as I have become too thin. I called the doctor and he said it was okay for me to just take it at night. But that didn't work out either. I tried discontinuing the 40 milligram and cut the pill in half and took 20 mg in the morning and 20 at night 4 several days instead. I still didn't feel well with this lower dose. Same side effects. I know people who use this product and have no side effects at all so it must be my metabolism. I am sensitive to medication in general. I guess it depends if you try it and it works for you then it may help with the feelings of heartburn etcetera. I am going to discontinue taking My understanding about this product is that it helps with the symptoms but I'm not sure if corrects the problem . It seems like provides longer-lasting relief over OTC antacids. I have never read a review that said taking this medication heals the core problem . Many people just keep taking PPIs and H2 blockers for years . my understanding is that they were not meant to be taken for long periods of time . I also take thyroid medication and and an antidepressant and this along with the Pepcid may have given me those feelings. I checked for contraindications for both of my meds and there weren't any.  1  Reflux40 Started having severe anxiety and depression. Crying for no reason. Was tired all the time. Dr. Tried me on anti depressive pills. Nothing helped. Just got worse. After reading all the reviews I am convinced it is the pepcid I will never take this drug again. Wished i had read these reviews sooner. The anxiety is horrible. I can certainly relate to all the negative reviews. F 70 7 days
