PEPCID  (FAMOTIDINE):  Famotidine is used to treat ulcers of the stomach and intestines and to prevent intestinal ulcers from coming back after they have healed. This medication is also used to treat certain stomach and throat (esophagus) problems (such as erosive esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease-GERD, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome). It works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach makes. It relieves symptoms such as cough that doesn't go away, stomach pain, heartburn, and difficulty swallowing. Famotidine belongs to a class of drugs known as H2 blockers. This medication is also available without a prescription. It is used to prevent and treat heartburn and other symptoms caused by too much acid in the stomach (acid indigestion). If you are taking this medication for self-treatment, it is important to read the manufacturer's package instructions carefully so you know when to consult your doctor or pharmacist.   FDA Approval Date: 1986-10-15 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Thought I had GERD Tingling, numbness in left arm and hand Panic attack Headache Constipation So I suffer with silent reflux and I initially purchased Prilosec. After a day or two of taking that. I woke up with chest pain in my chest. I didn’t realize it was the the side effect of the meds until I weened off. I thought I had possible GERD because I was experiencing symptoms. Long story short. I had weird feeling in chest and arms and had to call paramedics. I made a phone appt with a gastroenterologist . I explained to him how I felt the Prilosec caused these issues. He claimed that’s not common and suggested I take Pepcid. This is where the nightmare truly begin. I end up taking 2 pills of 20mg as he prescribed to take 40mg a day. That same night I started feeling discomfort. The next morning my hands and joints started cramping up and the tingles and discomfort was back in my left hand and arm. It felt like sign of a heart attack so I started to panic. My hand became cold , numb, jittering, shaking. I basically prayed to God and had to ride out the horrible feeling that developed. It was no doubt this was from the Pepcid. I will never take this mess again ! I was relieved to find this site and saw how others shared similar symptoms. These doctors should be ashamed of themselves but they are in the business of pharmaceuticals meant to destroy. Going forward I will deal with my silent reflux the natural way and disregard anything these doctors suggest cuz most of the time they are wrong with their diagnosis.  1  Stomach issues Oh my gosh, I thought I was losing it until I read these reviews. My doctor gave me famotadine due to the zantac issues. The first time I took a whole 40mg tablet, the next day I couldn't move I was so weak so my doctor said cut it in 1/2. I took 1/2 for a week and I was having pain in my side my integrative doctor said liver. So I went off for a couple days and liver was fine but still having the breathing issue so I took it again. The last 2x I took it, I called paramedics for heart racing the 1st time and I got up couldn't breathe and my hands started going numb. Anxiety was insane! Lower back pain, last night my foot cramped up. Why would they do this to people? F 52 6 months

1  GERD Thank God I found this forum. I honestly thought I was losing my mind when I started to experience extreme feelings of anxiety, impending doom, and depression after starting this OTC medication. I already deal with moderate anxiety, but NEVER like this and for days at a time! Never would have thought to connect all my symptoms to something as simple as Pepcid, but it was the most recent change in my routine so I only discovered this group by chance. I experienced: - Tingling and burning sensations in my stomach, arms and legs - A couple small blisters on my skin - Ringing in my ears - Trembling - Feeling jittery - Bowel cramps and irregular movements - Intense mood swings - Difficulty concentrating - Insomnia Almost every complaint I’ve seen others talk about on this forum I felt, and I only took the pill 2 times! I’m still not totally out of the haze of these side effects after 2 days without taking it. Praying the next few days things get back to normal, and for anyone else who is experiencing this. I’d rather deal with acid reflux and GERD than this madness and I will definitely never take this drug again. They need to do more to study these effects and warn people about the risks before others end up worse off because they don’t understand what is happening to them. M 30 2 days

1  Severe reflux. My story is too long to explain here. But I finally started researching my problems myself and overlooking what the doctor was saying. My pharmacist brought it up to me that I was on too high of a dose of famotidine for far too long. I've developed ibs-c and that has caused bleeding hemorrhoids. All they want to do is treat whatever problem I have at the time and not look for the source of the problem. Along with this I have had off and on anxiety, insomnia (three sleep clinics), heart palpitations (multiple cardiologists), brain fog, depression (which I refused medication for), and most recently ringing in my ears. It wasn't until I developed an intestinal infection over Christmas and I stopped all medications including famotidine. That my bowel movements returned to normal, my depression went away, my muscle aches went away, and I've been able to sleep through the night for three first time in years! I never associated it with famotidine until this week when I started it again and I am a complete mess. I'm going to stop the medication today and see if I can get symptom-free. You should too. For years I was prescribed 40 mg in the morning and 40 mg at night. 80 mg a day and with all the side effects I was having you would think my doctor would suspect the drug. Heck, you would think I would suspect the drug! You are your own best advocate. Research it. There are plenty of other people online that are having the same problems you are. M 56 16 years

1  Acid reflux from scleroderma Worked for acid reflux. Then I began having horrible cramps all over my body. After 8 weeks of sleepless nights and cramping from bending over daily. I began taking myself off meds to figure out the culprit. 7 days of eliminating Pepcid I'm nearly cramp free. F 61 3 months

1  Acid reflux Severe anxiety and depression within 24 hours of first dose. I have taken this drug intermittently over two months with severe anxiety that I couldnt pinpoint a reason for. It wasn’t until I recently googled the side effects to see others have also experienced similar problems. I will never again take this medication. It’s taken 8 days since I stopped the Med and I’m still experiencing slight anxiety. Looking forward to getting back to myself. It had immediate relief of my acid reflux within two hours of taking Pepcid. F 50 3 days

1  H2 antihistamine for chronic hives I started taking Pepcid after the whole Zantac issue with having a cancer causing agent. I never had issues with Zantac. Pepcid seems to have caused a lot of muscle pain for me, in my left leg, back and left arm. I also have had stomach aches frequently and lack of appetite. I reduced the dose down to 10 mg 2x a day but still am dealing with a lot of stomach issues. Has anyone had stomach issues coming off of or tapering off of Pepcid like pain, lack of appetite, frequent bowel movements etc? F 31 4 months

1  GERD Crippling anxiety. Muscle pain, weakness. Huge mental breakdown. Muscle cramps. Zantac had done this to me as a kid, so trying pepcid should have been an obvious no-go. Was feeling kind of desperate after about a week long battle with some crazy gastric problems. In retrospect, I'm certainly mental state was too fragile to get into a medication with a pretty well hidden history of weird psychosis issues. Either way, if you're prone to depression and anxiety you should leave this stuff alone. 1 and done for me. The only issue now is waiting out this terrible feeling. Awesome. Nothing makes gastrointestinal problems worse like extreme, crippling stress and anxiety:/ M 37 1 days

1  GERD Extreme anxiety, panic attacks, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, tingling and burning sensation in head and extremities, diarrhea, constipation, insomnia. Started taking Pepcid on October 20th, 2019 for my GERD. On October 22nd, 2019 I had the first panic attack that I have ever had. Having never experienced anything like this before, I was convinced I was dying. I rode out the panic attack and suffered from insomnia, anxiety, heart palpitations, sweating, nausea, IBS symptoms, tingling burning sensations, and cramps for the next 2 days. Finally, I had enough and went to the doctor. I mentioned I had just recently started Pepcid and she said nothing of it. She diagnosed me with anxiety/depression and put me on Prozac. After taking Prozac for 5 days, I became suicidal and was also having homicidal ideation. (nasty side effects of Prozac) I discontinued the Prozac but kept taking the Pepcid (never thought an antacid could cause anything like this) As the Prozac cleared from my system, my bad thoughts subsided but I still had all the anxiety and previously mentioned symptoms. I have suffered for nearly 20 days, thinking I was going crazy until I found this! I am so grateful for you all on this website. I had no idea what was happening to me (no history of mental illness) Pepcid literally could have killed me! Stopping this medication immediately. I’m hopeful that I’ll return to normal in a few days. M 27 20 days
