PEPCID  (FAMOTIDINE):  Famotidine is used to treat ulcers of the stomach and intestines and to prevent intestinal ulcers from coming back after they have healed. This medication is also used to treat certain stomach and throat (esophagus) problems (such as erosive esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease-GERD, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome). It works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach makes. It relieves symptoms such as cough that doesn't go away, stomach pain, heartburn, and difficulty swallowing. Famotidine belongs to a class of drugs known as H2 blockers. This medication is also available without a prescription. It is used to prevent and treat heartburn and other symptoms caused by too much acid in the stomach (acid indigestion). If you are taking this medication for self-treatment, it is important to read the manufacturer's package instructions carefully so you know when to consult your doctor or pharmacist.   FDA Approval Date: 1986-10-15 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Possible gastritis Severe anxiety, intense nervousness, insomnia, leg pain, unable to eat, heart palpitations, racing heart, feelings of doom, ear ringing, weight loss. I was told there was minimal side effects to this drug. My stomach feels worse now than before. I have been off this drug for 7 days now. Some of the anxiety has lessened but not completely gone. I thank God I found this site. It basically saved my life. I just wonder how much longer some of these side effects will linger. Hopefully not much longer. This drug should be taken off the market or a warning should be listed. I would have never known what had me so sick.if it wasn't for this site. Please do not take this drug. It is EVIL..  1  Acid reflux I used this for about 5 days. The first 3-4 days I was a little dizzy and tired. Once the 5th day hit, I woke up extremely tired I felt pressure in my chest and I felt like I could not breathe at all. I was dizzy, disoriented, short of breath, headache, chest pain/heaviness, shaky, muscle weakness/numbness, extreme fatigue, anxiousness, almost feeling like psychosis. Derealization, mood changes ect. This drug is absolutely despicable. I have not taken it for 3 days and I am still suffering from some of these side effects that they say is 'rare'. Do Not Take Famotidine. The side effects are worse than my acid reflux. I would advise no one to consume this. F 28 5 days

1  Acid reflux Extreme fatigue, anxiety, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, irregular heart beat, panic attacks, body feels hot, trouble sleeping, feeling of doom. I do not recommend this medication. If you have acid reflux look up natural ways to get rid of it. I started feeling all these symptoms since day 2 of taking it. I stopped taking it on day 5 as soon as I connected my symptoms with the medication. It's been 3 days since I stopped taking it. Not as fatigue anymore but still have extreme anxiety and had a few panic attacks. Hopefully this goes away soon! Lots of water to flush it out. M 20 5 days

1  GERD I was taking Pepcid and started to have very bad panic attacks and heart palpitations. I thought it was because I normally deal with anxiety attacks but this time it was different- more intense, more overbearing.. Please stop taking this medication and speak with your doctor about another substitute. I thought I was about to have a heart attack and every time I drifted off to sleep it seemed I was awakened with a jolt! I'll never take this medicine again. F 39 1 years

1  Gastritis/ ulcer/ reflux Extreme Anxiety , nothing like I've ever felt! So nervous. When I would stand up couldn't catch my breath which intensified the anxiety even more. Felt like I was losing my mind. Like I was completely out of control of everything. The labored breathing was the worst. Would fall asleep then wake up in complete panic. This would go on for hours nonstop. Couldn't gather my thoughts . Very sleepy but unable to rest for the fear of not being able to breath. Couldn't even walk to the bathroom without having a panic attack. I mean a complete meltdown. Everyone may not have this reaction but from what I've read form others it's really common. I will never , ever take this medicine again. If you can avoid it please don't take it. The benefits are not worth the anxiety. Get some aloe juice, start juicing cabbage . Stay away from the acidic foods . Try to go as natural as possible. Of course talk to your doctor because they are trained in dealing with these things. But whatever you do , plead with them not to put you on this medication! F 36 1 months

2  Gastritis / Gastropathy Nausea, queasy, stomach discomfort, jittery/shaky, chest discomfort/tightness, light-headed, bloated, heart racing, hoarse voice, muscle aches, anxiety, ears ringing, fatigue. I took the H2 blocker Famotidine/Pepcid for over 3 months for Gastritis, due to an endoscopy that showed areas of redness, irritation and inflammation. No ulcers. Made me feel really lousy even though I think it did help the Gastritis somewhat. I honestly don't know what was worse the drug, or the condition. Was also on Sucralfate for a period of time too, which also caused side effects for me. Both drugs are nasty. Took a couple different PPI's and Zantac/Rinitidine several years ago for a similar incidence of Gastritis, but it's off the market now, so I had to find another drug. I decided to try Famotidine. Many, many, side effects and believe me, I got all of them. Reading all the posts here, it looks like many of you had/have the same problems that I did with this drug. I'm in the process of weaning off the Famotidine/Pepcid now and dealing with significant acid rebound from it. Not fun at all. I've been off it for a week now and taking only Tums.to fight the discomfort. Stopped taking the Sucralfate several weeks ago. I don't want to go back and take any of these H2 blockers again, and no way will I ever do a PPI again. Still feeling crappy for the most part. It can come on all of a sudden and BAM...it's very uncomfortable. No light at the end of the tunnel yet. Best of luck to anyone fighting this kind of illness. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone with some tips as to how to beat Gastritis and what I should try or do. M 62 3.5 months

1  Urticaria Mood swings, cry one moment then be throwing things around with rage. My family doesn't deserve this because I'm taking Pepcid. I stopped, why would my doctor recommend I take this. I'm so embarrassed and guilty to had all these side effects and take it out on family and friends. Luckily my husband understood and advised me not to take them anymore. Please inform family and friends the horrible side effects that can transform a nice person to a person they never knew before. Please take this medication off the market. F 53 5 days

5  Reflux Severe anxiety and palpitations (PVCs). Ended up in the emergency room. Complete work up shower no heart issues. Anxiety increased and I felt like I could not breathe. Finally connected the Pepcid to the onset of my symptoms. I've been off the Pepcid for 3 weeks and the PVCs are just now going away. And anxiety is decreasing. Absolutely will never take this drug again. F 54 30 days

1  GERD Although my gerd improved after about 6 weeks I noticed difficulty getting a full breath. as time went on it got worse but I did not attribute it to Pepcid. I also had severe anxiety, I literally felt as if I was going to jump out of my skin and could not settle myself, within about4-6 hours that would improve, I was waking up abruptly many times a night. eventually I stopped taking it, for the next two weeks the symptoms persisted but eventually diminished. The short of breath feeling lasted a full two weeks, it was very worrisome, It is now pretty much gone, I truly attribute it to Pepcid especially after reading other people’s experiences similar to mine. I know you can get rebound reflux after stopping and believe that is what was experiencing for two weeks after discontinuing this medication. I will never take this drug again. F 63 3 months

1  Chronic GERD (Heartburn) Intense brain fog upon taking drug, takes 24-48 hours to clear on each occasion. My attention span was poor, and my recall of words/facts was noticeably slower than normal and sometimes absent. Level of impairment was comparable to marijuana, but without the intoxication to accompany it. This product did reduce my stomach acid level and intensity, which was helpful (I did not have any success with ranitidine/Zantac, a different H2 blocker). F 42 2 days

1  Prevent Allergic reaction and Gerd Anxiety and just a weird feeling that things aren't right. Pins and needles feeling in my feet and swollen feet feeling but not actually swollen. Super tired feeling even after 8 hours of sleep and almost scared to fall asleep. I just read the side effects yesterday and stopped it after my morning dose. Still feeling the same way 36 hours later. I thought this was side effects from Cipro, Flagyl and Levaquin from the last month of treatment of Diverticulitis. Stopped all them pills Jan 5th. Today is the 17th...if it goes away in a week it was definitely the pepcid! M 48 18 days

1  Acid reflux Racing heart, high BP, shaking of arms and legs, trouble swallowing, anxiety, panic attacks. Took one pill last Friday to ease a bad case of acid reflux that triggered a panic attack. Once I took the pill around 8pm, everything seemed fine and it did reduce my symptoms enough that I felt relaxed and fell asleep. Thats when everything went ro crap. Got woken up at around 11pm with my heart trying to jump out of my chest and the worst anxiety I've ever felt. I felt like I was dying! Rushed to the emergency room and they ran all the tests because my heart rate was about 130bpm and my blood pressure was high. They even ct scanned my heart but found nothing wrong. The er doc was puzzled and couldn't make heads or tails of what was happening. Finally they said it was anxiety and prescribed me some meds for that. Unfortunately for me, it didn't end there. All week I've been getting horrible anxiety attacks throughout the day, shaking and fast heart rate as soon as I stood up. Finally yesterday I started to feel like myself, and most of the symptoms are disappearing. Thankfully I found this page to make me understand that I wasn't going crazy and/or dying. Needless to say , I followed up with my doctor just in case and everything is fine now and I feel great. Even though I've been suffering from panic attacks since 2009, I never had anything like this and hope I never will again. Keep fighting, guys it does get better! M 43 1 days

5  Antihistamine, allergies, gastric a Started experiencing muscle tightness and cramping not associated with electrolytes. Back of my arms and thighs experience burning sensation not sure if associated as I have many neuro muscular symptoms prior to taking Pepcid. I have cut dose in half and barely notice muscle cramping after just 1 day. Burning still exists do not feel it is associated. Time is telling. Works for allergies. EGD revealed moderate inflammation duodenal and antrum of stomach. Also I'm a Covid ICU nurse so it should help with histamine release of Mast Cells should I get Covid-19. I still feel it outweighs the risk of Covid-19 and stomach inflammation. I will continue it is a great drug. Without it my allergies are uncontrollable I cut the dose back to 10 mg twice daily. I feel much better and still gain the benefit. I try to remember it is very much stronger than Zantac. F 49 0 months

1  GERD / ESOPHAGITIS Shakiness, Anxiety, nausea, stomach cramps, muscle twitching, dry eyes, dizziness, fatigue and feeling like my whole body is on fire! Although it helps to alleviate the GERD symptoms, the side effects are unbearable! I've been taking Pepcid complete (chewables) for a little over 3 weeks now, and for the past week I've been so nauseous and tired that I haven't wanted to leave my bed. The nausea seems to get worse soon after eating. Also on top of already struggling with anxiety/depression, Pepcid makes it 10x worse! M 28 3 weeks

3  GERD, Heartburn After a month of taking it twice a day, I started feeling mentally foggy and just NAUSEOUS, severe severe nausea. Had no idea why, I thought this drug was supposed to help with that by neutralizing acid. When in reality, this was causing the nausea, especially after reading more reviews and literature on the drug. You're better off finding NATURAL ways to help your GERD. M 26

2  Gerd Drug caused chest pain near heart. Took medication before bed to stop nighttime Gerd. Went to ER twice with severe chest pain. On second occasion also had leg and arm pain. Eventually led to severe numbness and muscle cramping in forearms and wrists like I had carpel tunnel. Luckily read the reviews on this site and determined that Pepsid was causing all of these issues. Stopped the medication immediately. It has taken about 5-6 wks for the muscle issues to improve significantly but not completely. Also had bladder issues which are also resolving. Chest pain went away within a day or two. M 55 6 months
