I casually bought a bottle OTC to help deal with some minor heartburn, and took it probably 5-10 times over the course of a couple weeks without even thinking about it. Out of the blue I started to develop fatigue, twitching muscles, and muscle and joint pain so bad I was sure I hurt myself. Started to get pins and needles like nerve damage. The knees and feet were the worst except it would also pop up all over the rest of the body too which was bizarre. Then the anxiety and panic attacks kicked in and things really went off the rails. Sudden bouts of fear, waking up repeatedly with racing heart and palpitations. Multiple trips to urgent care, several days without sleeping, benzos from the ER, multiple visits to my GP, MRI by an orthopedist, seen by a neurologist and rheumatologist, all the bloodwork they could come up with and... nothing. They said I was healthy, I thought I must be dying of some mystery disease that nobody could find, or I was losing my mind. Then one day I happened to come across the reviews and there were all the symptoms right in front of me, and it finally hit me that I'd taken the Pepcid shortly before everything went to hell. That was a few weeks ago now. The muscle and joint pain is significantly better, and neuralgia is mostly gone. Anxiety and mood aren't as bad as they were at the beginning, but still not as stable as they should be either, and sleep is still not fully returned. I started to take this medication 5 days ago due to a bout of acid reflux caused by my severe histamine intolerance issues. From the very beginning I started to experience strange feeling in my chest, a mixture of left sided pain and breathlessness. Suddenly I started to worry about my heart but of course didn't connect any dots. Within the next few days the strange feeling in my chest continued but last night was definitely the worst. I do suffer from an anxiety disorder but didn't experience any panic attacks in a long time. Last night after midnight I was suddenly awoken with the worst panic/ anxiety feeling; my vision became wild, I had hot flashes, sweats and pins and needles in my extremities. Like everyone else here I couldn't understand why this is happening all of the sudden. When I woke up in the morning the horrible anxiety feeling was still there but I right away knew it must have been pepcid; After doing extensive research I found out that pepcid very often affects CNS due to its ability of blocking acetylcholine which is one of the very important neurotransmitters in the brain. Low acetylcholine levels create a host of psychiatric symptoms including severe anxiety and brain fog. It's been over 24h and I still feel very anxious. I really hope that soon I will feel like myself again. Some twitching in my calves. | The symptoms started on the 2nd day of starting Pepcid. It took a few days to realize that the only thing it could be was the Pepcid. When I discussed with my pcp, she said she was unaware of the side effects but let's hope that's what caused all your pain and you can get better! I am 6 weeks off medication. Fascia, muscle, bone pain all resolving. Anxiety and depression gone. Not I have a hiatal hernia I believed caused by the tearing of the fascia of my diaphragm. I wish I had found this site and other medication reviews sooner. The side effects started 17 days after starting the medication……probably the reason the medication states do not to take for more than 2 weeks. My doctor did not monitor me while in this medication. That was in March 2022. I now have periods (maybe 1-2 weeks) of symptoms subsiding - and then they start again. Does anyone know how long this will continue? I'm desperate to feel normal again. When the symptoms reoccur, I barely get off the couch. | Although most of the doctors I've seen won't definitively say the symptoms are due to Famotidine, they don't say it's not the Famotidine. One doc even said symptoms can occur with more frequency in older adults. Please let me know if you've had similar experiences, and if so, how long did the symptoms persist. And do not take this medication. I was recently diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. I started to notice that I'd wake up with a high heart rate. All doctors said it was anxiety. But then yesterday my heart rate got really high and I felt chest pressure. I spoke to GI doctor and he asked me to use one more time in isolation. I did last night and phew, it happened again. I was able to sleep with something else but after waking up the high heart started again and kept increasing. I ended up taking an Ativan and beta blocker to lower everything. Yikes.
