I was admitted to the hospital and spent the next 2 days being closely monitored. Without having any idea what caused my palpitations, I was given Pepcid with Propranolol to help with acid reflux and palpitations. Every time i would drift off to sleep, i would wake myself up holding my breath. I also felt super weak like my body was shutting down. When I was admitted at the hospital I didn't think much about my symptoms but I had to switch from Prilosec to Pepcid again yesterday and experienced the same thing so I must be one of the unfortunate 1%ers who gets the worst of the worst side effects. Most recently I took Pepcid at 5pm on 10/21/21, 30 min after I felt EXTREMELY bloated and uncomfortable. Once I got home I ate dinner slowly around 6 & continued to have heartburn until about 11am after drinking some hemp milk & was able to fall asleep for a solid 30 minutes before waking up with horrible heart palpitations and holding my breath (apnea) that almost sent me to the ER again, and I continued to have a panic attack until about 3 am. After weaning myself off it has taken months to get over this awful drug. I now use apple cider vinegar in water and apple juice to help with my indigestion. The indigestion has improved but the anxiety well that just would not go. I have been seeing a psychologist for the last 2 months and can now say that the anxiety is finally under control. I wanted to reassure you all who have been suffering after taking this that there is light at the end of a very long tunnel. Please try alternative medicine, meditation and maybe think about seeking help with a psychologist, it works. I feel normal for the first time. This nightmare started last October when I was put on PPIs for gastritis. They gave me terrible side effects but did not work it out until December. The GP would not believe me so had to go private. Was then changed to Famotidine (Pepcid) then had to gradually wean off. Eventually got off them in April and it has taken until now to get over the long lasting effects of that terrible drug!! | Do not stay on this if you are getting bad side effects. I was having excess saliva production that was worrying me, so I thought instead of Tums I would take Pepcid. I had an extreme reaction about an hour after taking it. I started feeling dizzy and delirious about an hour after taking and laid down. I suddenly felt extreme burning all over my body and a prickly feeling, and I thought I was experiencing symptoms of multiple sclerosis. I was feeling extremely panicked and agitated and nearly had a panic attack due to the strange psychological effects. I had experienced similar symptoms during protracted benzodiazepine withdrawal, so I was familiar with how to handle these kinds of episodes. I found the rare symptoms of Pepcid and realized I am one of those unlucky few that have this extreme allergic/neurological reaction to this medication. Once I found this forum I realized that what was happening was not life threatening and was able to wait it out and make a recovery plan. Time, rest, social support, and some good food go a long way. It took about 6 hours for the initial panic to wear off and for the waves of burning sensation to cease. It took another 48 hours or so to feel back to normal again. There was a ramp of dissociation and depersonalization that slowly improved as time passed. Get rest, try to eat, and remember this is an allergic reaction to a medication that is not appropriate for you. I've always been prone to anxiety and didn't seem to have any side effects from this OTC medication until this month. For about three weeks now, I've had unexplained panic attacks, frequent hot flashes every day (I am 29!!!), a sense of impending doom, a fairly constant headache, and it feels like I'm constantly walking on clouds. It's been debilitating. Luckily, before making the decision to visit the ER for these unbearable side effects, I decided to look up side effects of Pepcid. I'm grateful to have found this site. Everyone had had a similar experience, it seems, except for the hot flashes. I will not be taking the chewable tablets anymore. I only gave this a "2" rating because it actually does help tremendously with my GERD. I had even recently only been taking half a tablet instead of a whole one because I would feel nauseous in the mornings otherwise. After all the time I've been taking this medicine, I'm only now feeling these more severe side effects.
