ALEVE  (NAPROXEN SODIUM):  Naproxen is used to relieve pain from various conditions. It also reduces pain, swelling, and joint stiffness caused by arthritis, bursitis, and gout attacks. This medication is known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by blocking your body's production of certain natural substances that cause inflammation. If you are treating a chronic condition such as arthritis, ask your doctor about non-drug treatments and/or using other medications to treat your pain. See also Warning section. Some brands of sustained-release naproxen take longer to be absorbed and are not recommended for pain that needs quick relief (such as during a gout attack). Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about your particular brand.   FDA Approval Date: 1994-01-11 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  major arthritus pain in legs/knees I was taking about 1-2 Aleve pills every other day or so. I started noticing occasional painful blisters inside my mouth - maybe one every other month. I just made the connection now reading other people's comments! Will switch back to Advil and see if the blisters go away - however Advil doesn't kill the pain. Works great for pain - completely knocks it out! F 38 6 months

1  jaw pain I had taken Aleve one year ago for a toothache. After a few hours my lip began to swell, the right side of my lower jaw began to itch and swell and I had a small patch that itched on my left arm. I did not relate it to Aleve and went to the dr. He said it was not a reaction to Aleve that is was a fever blister virus that had manifested itself on my face and arm due to stress. He gave me cream that did not help. Took a long time for blistering and swelling to go away. I took Aleve again a year later for jaw pain and within two hours the exact same three places (lip, face, and patch on my arm) began to itch and swell. I went 24 hours after the reaction to a different dr. and she said it was a rare "fixed reaction", a reaction where the exact same spots are affected, to the Aleve and to never take it again.  4  Carpral Tunnel Lower back pain, random itchy skin, sleepyness, facial acne. I was recommended to take 1 pill morning and 1 night for my Capral tunnel problems in my wrists. I was pleased with how well it helped. But after a few weeks, I noticed some other problems like back pain and acne. Didn't know it was the Aleve until I started reading on the possible side effects. Not sure if it's worth the other issues to take this stuff. M 39 6 months

1  ankle pain I took Aleve on and off for about 2 years with no problems and it worked really good. Then I developed a severe allergic reaction to it resulting in massive lip swelling and facial swelling. I went to the emergency room the first time before I made the connection to Aleve. As it turns out, my system does not agree with any of the "nsaid's" anymore. I'd rather live with the screaming pain than with the swollen lips and face. This drug can be very dangerous to your health if you self medicate with it. Although it relieves pain, it has some very serious long term side effects and should not be and otc drug. M 44 2 years

4  menstrual Cramps Constipation, tingling in the arms, fatigue, nausea. The nausea is a little hard to sort out, because I also experience nausea as a menstrual symptom, but sometimes I would take the pill in advance of onset, too early by mistake (often hard to tell when period symptoms will hit), but I would still have nausea as side effect of the drug. Nausea is aided by eating with food, but I totally recommend against consuming milk. Lactose intolerance plus menstrual cramps, nausea, etc. result in a very nasty combination. I selected "15 years," but that's been on a one-day-per-month basis. I used to dose up for menstrual cramps, taking several over the course of 24 hours, but now I'm down to 1 pill or zero. Good diet and weight loss has helped a lot, although it's still a misery, but not nearly as bad as it used to be. So, these days I sometimes choose menstrual symptoms over drug side effects. I used to take Anaprox before Aleve came out. F 44 15 years

2  neck & upper back muscle pain extreme drowsiness, stomach irritation, ringing ears, jittery feeling with rapid heartbeat, feeling 'spacey' I only take drugs when I'm in extreme pain due to sensitivity to just about everything. I cannot take this during the day, it absolutely turns me into a zombie. After a couple of days I get lingering stomach problems but yogurt & probiotics seem to help that. It relieves pain only partially. (Wine works best!) F 47 3 days

1  menstual cramps got dizzy, upset stomach Try to take 6 pills of Black cohosh a day for menstrual pain. I took it for 4 months, and now have no pain. This drug doesn't cure, just hides the problem. F 20 3 months

5  Menstrual Cramps None that I've experienced. It took about an hour before the medicine kicks in and afterward it alleviated the pain about 95%. I've tried all the medicine at the pharmacy and I have to say this is the best you can find that actually work and and the effect of it last a long time. Sometimes I just take 2 pills on my first day of the cycle and didn't have to take it again til next month. I would stay home all day and not go anywhere or do anything if I'm on my period without this medication. It's a life saver!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! F 21 5 years

1  Knee Pain Intestinal Bleeding and elevated Liver test results Anyone on Plavix and/or asprin should not take Aleve or similar drugs without very close monitoring of a licensed medical doctor. Don't allow a nurse, NP-nurse practitioner or a PA- Physician's Assistant monitor you. They, in my opinion are NOT qualified to monitor and manage such a risky combination of medications when blood appears in your stools. If you have a physician who asks you to see one of the above I just mentioned, Find another doctor. Aleve may be safe for some people for very short term use, but long term use should be out of the question. Aleve certainly helps reduce pain, BUT it places some people such as me at very serious risk. Check the toilet paper and the bowel movement in the toilet everytime you go. I'm not kidding you about this. I's too serious to take lightly and I hope you all watch out for this so called side effect. The blood is the effect and the reduction of pain is the side effect as far as I'm concerned. Good Luck. M 67 8 months

2  neck pain Lips, tongue, eyes, hands, and feet swelled in a matter of 2 minutes.. in addition, felt like my ears closed, and breathing was becoming more difficult. Hands and feet looked like they were going to explode, and was very painful. Took benedryl, but ended up calling an ambulance when symptons continued to worsen. Recieved epinephrine and steroid pack at hospital. Took about 2 full days for all the swelling to go down. It scares me to death.... F 41 1 days

1  flu It started with swollen lips and went on to blisters covering the entire inside of my mouth, throat, esphogus, eyes and skin. I had an allergic reaction to aleve after taking 3. It was horrible and the worst thing I have every experienced. It took 6 weeks to recover with Prednisone. I had taken ibuprofen over the years with no problems. Now I can't take ibuprofen, asprin or any of the nsaids. Use great caution with otc's. If you think you are having a reaction get to the hospital and tell them every drug you have been taking.
