ALEVE  (NAPROXEN SODIUM):  Naproxen is used to relieve pain from various conditions. It also reduces pain, swelling, and joint stiffness caused by arthritis, bursitis, and gout attacks. This medication is known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by blocking your body's production of certain natural substances that cause inflammation. If you are treating a chronic condition such as arthritis, ask your doctor about non-drug treatments and/or using other medications to treat your pain. See also Warning section. Some brands of sustained-release naproxen take longer to be absorbed and are not recommended for pain that needs quick relief (such as during a gout attack). Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about your particular brand.   FDA Approval Date: 1994-01-11 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  Tendonitis in thumbs and wrists I was taking 1 pill every 12 hours and for the first couple of days, I had stomach upset, dizziness and a general feeling of just being "off" or not quite myself but, it wasn't anything I couldn't cope with and it was helping the pain in my hands. However, on the 5th day, I took an aleve before going to bed, woke up two hours later with intense pain and burning in my stomach. This pain lasted several hours and became so intense, I contemplated a trip to the ER. But, since I had young children at home,I called a pharmacy who told me to try children's pepto bismol to see if that calmed the pain down. After several hours, the pain subsided but NEVER again will I take aleve - the pain was brutal! F 37 5 days

1  Sciatica Took Aleve a total of four times (8 tablets total) over a period of one week. Caused an allergic reaction that gave me a moderately severe case of hives (7 on a scale of 1-10) on my arms, legs and back. My hands and fingers swelled to the size of catcher's mitts and remained that way for three days. Thankfully, my face and throat were never affected, and I never had a problem breathing. However, the itching on my arms, palms and fingers was virtually unbearable!! I'd rather be subjected to the Chinese Water Torture than experience itching like that again. A day after the breakout, I took OTC Benadryl, Claritan and an anti-fungal spray to help relive the itching, along with placing cold compresses on my hands and arms when the itching was at its worse, which was every few hours or so over a period of three days. The OTCs helped only midly, but were better than doing nothing. Finally, after three or four days of intolerable itching, the hives and the swelling went away. Aleve is the firs Take with extreme caution. Aleve is an excellent painkilling med if you're not allergic to it. But it definitely isn't worth taking to find out. M 39 1 weeks

1  osteo arthritis-knee Major swelling in the feet, a surreal type feeling, bad heartburn (severe enough that it was not helped by a prescription I take nor OTC medicines( Thank goodness my eating and medication habits have been fairly standard. When I noticed the swelling, I reviewed what was different about my eating and medication activities, and the only thing that was different was the addition of Aleve. I have taken Advil for a long time, but I thought something new may have a better effect. However, this definitely was NOT true. I would not suggest this product to anyone without suggesting that they check the website for side effect of those who have actually taken this product. I will say it was a bit scary; the swelling has begun to subside. F 58 2 days

2  severe cramps;endometriosis itching on tops of feet, palms of hands and severe intense itching on scalp I've taken alleve a few times before without problems but started taking it daily about a week and half ago to deal with some severe menstrual cramps and pain associated with endometriosis; it relieves the pain but the side-effects have gotten worse over time and are quite annoying; I'm concerned some of the more life-threatening effects may eventually occur so I've stopped taking it F 39 1.5 weeks

5  severe menstrual cramps dizziness, dry mouth It's the only drug I've found to ease the pain. I'm looking for an alternative, however, because I don't like the long term possible side-effects.(stroke, heart disease) F 41 10 days

2  Fibromyalgia control I've been taking aleve twice a day, morning and night, for @ six months now. @ 2 months in, started having this weird kind of 'crawling stomach' feeling in the middle of the night, and some tingling in the tips of the fingers in my left hand. Never connected those symptoms with aleve, until a friend mentioned the same thing. The only similarity is that we're both taking aleve at night. I'm stopping it for a while, and seeing if those VERY neurological symptoms are caused by aleve. it's tricky stuff- if you look at the side effects, they're multi-system F 50 6 months

1  Ruptured disc I took 2 otc pills with food every 12 hours for 48 hours following my doctor's recommendation. The swelling in my back really started improving and I had no symptoms until day 3. I began experiencing SEVERE stomach pain that kept me up all night. I tried eating more, even though the pain was so severe I didn't want to eat. I drank milk, the pain would not stop. I stopped taking it, and it's been over a week now, and my stomach still is killing me. I'm taking nothing for the pain now, and just gutting it out. F 51 3 days

1  After a root canal Full-blown anaphalactic shock I am not allergic to aspirin or ibuprofen, but Aleve sent me to the ER with severe anaphalactic shock. Immediate burning sensation, hives popping up all over my arms and chest like some bad Hollywood effects, difficulty breathing until finally I couln't anymore and passed out. I contacted P&G about it, never heard back from them. F 37 1 days

1  head/neck/back pain I took Aleve before going to bed; woke up 2 hours later from severe itching on the soles of my feet/palms of my hands. The itching progressed to all my joints (wrists/ankles/elbows/knees/shoulders) and I developed hives & some tiny, fluid-filled blisters on my soles/palms. Took Benedryl; after a few hours, the itching subsided. I had this same kind of bizarre, severe itching only one other time - the last time I took Aleve. Now that I know the symptoms are connected, I'm scratching this off my list of OTC pain relievers. F 36 1 days

4  Headaches/ broken arm I have taken Alleve since about 1998 off and on for headaches. I never noticed any problem. About 2 months ago I broke my elbow so i took a lot of Alleve to keep the swelling down (I thought). About a week ago I stopped taking it and about the same time I have had swollen burning lips and a sensitive tongue. After a week of using hydrocortisone cream and lip balm, I didn't see much results. But today my lips are less swollen. It is not painful just bothersome. I do suffer from anxiety at times. After reading this web page I am wondering if Alleve contributes to that. F 56 45 days

3  Headache, sore muscles Was "randomly" getting hives all over my hands, feet, and knees (and sometimes on my temples). I did not realize until the last time that it was caused by the ALEVE. My headache was gone but the allergic reaction is definitely not worth it. One thing I will add is that I have had a similar experience once after taking ibuprofen. So, I don't think it is the active ingredient in it that causes the reaction but maybe a binding agent that is used in several OTC analgesics. F 22 3 years

1  Prevention of inflammation After 7 days of taking Aleve (2 x per day) I had sudden, painless, massive GI bleeding; was rushed to the emergency room, passed out, more blood, code blue. I required 4 units of blood transfusion. Fortunately I survived this near-death experience, but it has left some big emotional scars. I have diverticulosis, and the doctors all said the Aleve caused the massive bleeding. This is probably an ultra-sensitivity to Aleve (or possibly all NSAIDs) and such a dramatic side-effect is rare -- but well documented in the medical literature (as I have found out since). NEVER take Aleve or any other NSAIDs (or aspirin) if you have diverticulosos or have ever experienced any GI bleeding, whether upper or lower. F 62 7 days

1  leg and back pain Hives, swollen eyes and face, swollen fingers, itchy all over, stomach ache, tired, heart burn, constipation, difficulty breathing Not worth it! It only takes one time and you'll regret it. After taking aleve for the 3rd time finally connected the side effects to Aleve. Will never take again! M 40 1 days

1  UTI and fibromyalgia Severe hives, intense itching esp. on hands, feet, scalp. Finished 7 days of Macrobid. Worked wonders for the UTI. Had also been taking Aleve for a few days. Next morning took 2 more Aleve but within an hour developed hives beginning on neck, lower back. Progressed to all over body, except face. Eventually, any thing that touched my body would create a breakout--clothes, self, steering wheel. Claritin and Prednisone are giving precious little relief. The last two nights I have been a heartbeat away from a trip to the ER, but am riding this out. This is day four with no subsiding of symptoms. Don't know if this is due to Macro or Aleve or both.  1  sore muscles from gym I first took 2 Aleve to relieve pain and soreness that I had from working out. A few hours later, I noticed that my female parts were burning REALLY bad, so I went and got into the bath, then went to bed. I woke up the next morning still experiencing vaginal pain.....SO....what did I do?? I took 2 Aleve. BAD IDEA. My hands and feet were itching, my vaginal area is EXTREMELY swollen and painful. I cannot urinate, the pain is too severe. My elbows are BRIGHT red, and painful to the touch. My eyes are itchy, swollen, and red. My tongue was thick feeling. I have been taking 2 Benadryl every 6 hours for 2 days, today being my 3rd day. I am in SOOOOOOO much pain. It doesn't seem to be getting much better. In my case, I do not have any insurance, so I am trying to treat this at home. I don't know what to do. I think that this drug should be taken off the market. It causes extremely painful side effects. I will tell everyone I know to stay away from Aleve. F 24 2 days

1  Back Pain At 1:30am I took Aleve w/ a full glass of water to help with muscle/back pain. Woke up about 10 minutes later and my whole body was sweating, then my hands, feet, lips, scalp all started to itch. By the time I work up the boyfriend, my face was swollen and bumps appeared on back and stomach. Then my breathing became restricted. After 2 hours all side effects subsided, did not go to doctor. Woke up the next morning with sore stomach and throat. Weird thing is that I have taken Aleve for years and never had a problem! I won't ever be taking it again after that scary reaction! F 23
