I never had any problems taking it before but two days ago I took 3 advil in the morning at work since I didn't have my Aleve with me. Then went home early because of the cramps and took one Aleve around 5 pm which was plenty of time from taking the Advil that morning. But because the pain was so bad, I took another Aleve around 9 pm (4 hours later). It wasn't until 11 pm when I was getting ready for bed that I noticed a little swelling but still didn't think much about it so I went to bed. I woke up the next morning for work and immediately felt something wrong. My face was tight and felt big. I looked in the mirror and my cheeks and eye lids were swollen and my forehead and chin were too. My nose and lips were fine. My cheeks were also bright red. I went to my doctor and I am now on predisone (steriod) but I'm still swollen. After the first time I broke out in hives, I didn't know what caused it, the second time, I still didn't know it was the aleve and ended up going to the hospital because of the reaction, the third and last time I will ever be taken Aleve, I thankfully had steroid pills left over from the second time and took them to calm the hives down. I realized it was the Aleve when I put two and two together and read the Warning label on the bottle! It was so scary and I'm glad I found the reason for the suffering. THEN a blotchy rash appeared on my chest and neck which rapidly spread to my back and shoulders. I stopped the Aleve and contacted my doctor and a dermatologist who gave me cortisone cream. The next day the rash extended to my abdomen, stomach and thighs. Aleve is the most likely cause, but I've been taken off all pills, including vitamins and put on Prednisone (20 mg twice a day) and Zyrtec. The rash looks better after one day, but still has a long way to go to get back to normal. At least it's not very itchy. | An occasional normal dosage of Aleve should work for most people. I was red and puffy around my lips and down through my chin. The itching was horrible! Then i found that when i urinated, any part of my body that the urine touched started to itch like crazy! I got unusually sleepy in the evening, and even started to feel some weakness. Went to bed and got to sleep no problem, but awoke with my heart racing about 1.5 hours later. Felt like a panic attack and actually caused one due to the racing heart rate. I also felt unusually warm and had to blot my face with a cold cloth...had to take Xanax to calm down to go back to sleep. I feel very fortunate to ONLY have had these symptoms from Aleve (Naproxen) after having read the symptoms of NEAR DEATH that some have reported on this site. I will never take Aleve again, and I would not recommend it to anyone. I have taken OTC ibuprophen for years with no problems, so I called my pharmacist to ask what dose of ibuprophen would be equivilent. He told me 2-3 200mg tablets every 6-8 hours. Welt like hives developed along with a severe deep itching sensation. Eyelids started to swell and slight chest stiffness with drymouth. | I just took Aleve for the first time last night for menstrual cramps and actually felt fine until about 3 hours later. (which is supposedly odd to have a reaction after that long). But after some research , Aleve hits its peak in your system at about 4 hours after taking it. It also has a very long half-life any where from 5-7 hrs, sometimes longer depending on your body. It started with itchy eyelids that swelled up and the hives just spread throughout my body in patches. I started to become anxious and it felt like my heart was pounding out of my chest. I ended up taking a Benadryl which subsided the itching but still had the hives 2 hrs later. Woke up this morning with slightly puffy eyes and the hives are gone. What a scarey experience! Please use this drug with CAUTION and I recommend taking it during the day if you have never taken it before. It will be easier to deal with symptoms during the day. Years later I found myself in an ER burn unit due to the severity of the reaction I had from one dose of Aleve. Severe swelling and blistering of face, genitals, chest, hands, and underarms. | My PCP diagnosed me with genital herpes and did not give me a blood test to confirm his "visual" diagnosis. I rarely took Aleve and it took me 4 years to make the connection that my "herpes outbreaks" were actually allergic reactions to Aleve. I could "go" up to year without having an outbreak which really meant I didn't take Aleve during that time. I'm lucky to be alive. My reactions became so severe that I was catergorized as having Steven Johnson Syndrome. After getting over the shock that I did not have Herpes and Aleve was to blame, I have moved on as best I can.
