ALEVE  (NAPROXEN SODIUM):  Naproxen is used to relieve pain from various conditions. It also reduces pain, swelling, and joint stiffness caused by arthritis, bursitis, and gout attacks. This medication is known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by blocking your body's production of certain natural substances that cause inflammation. If you are treating a chronic condition such as arthritis, ask your doctor about non-drug treatments and/or using other medications to treat your pain. See also Warning section. Some brands of sustained-release naproxen take longer to be absorbed and are not recommended for pain that needs quick relief (such as during a gout attack). Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about your particular brand.   FDA Approval Date: 1994-01-11 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Head aches Erratic blood pressure as high as 149/98 to as low as 58/36, heart palpitations PVC’s, dark urine I thought I wasn’t drinking enough water, passed out, nervousness, the list goes on… I started taking Aleve for head aches, and menstrual cramps when the Tylenol didn’t seem to be working. Over all I am a healthy 46 yof, and with all the symptoms I listed I didn’t seek medical attention until I passed out. After cardiac tests, sleep tests, blood tests to include hormone levels, I found out there was no reason that the Dr could find for the medical issues. I have since stopped taking Aleve after seeing a commercial on the possible side effects of NSAID’s, and most of my symptoms have corrected or at least have become tolerable. I guess the damage is done so now I will have to live with it. My warning is, a otc medication may work well for awhile, but as with all medications over time the risk of the side effects increases, and you may be the one person who has the severe reaction, or in my case life long damage.  1  Arthritis Pain whelphs, hives, excessive sweating, light headed, heart racing, chest pains, difficulty breathing, lessions, itching out of control, sores like chicken pox The warning label was so small that I feel misled. This reaction has cost me 2 weeks off of work and lots of suffering. I am still not well. I will never take Aleve again. I had to use a magnifying glass to read the warning. Why doesn't the FDA make this more well known and visible. F 58 2 years

5  pain None I took the prescription strength of this medicine years ago. It was the only thing that helped. Recently I broke my arm and they prescribed Oxycodone, which did nothing. I had discovered that Aleve contains the same medicine as Naprosyn and took it instead. I am relieved that I didn't suffer from the negative effects as the other people here. Drugs are scary as you never know who is going to have an adverse reaction and the Doctors never tell you. I use Aleve exclusively for pain. I am not a shill for any drug company, this drug works for me while others don't. I can't take Demerol, Versed, Oxycodone, Vicodin etc. F 53 20 years

4  arthritis pain in knees & neck I was prescribed Naprosyn in December for severe leg/knee pain & when the prescription was empty continued with OTC Aleve- 2 pills twice daily to approximate the dosage. It worked very well helping with the pain (which I found out when I stopped taking it). Along with it I have had a rash and hives on my legs which I thought was a possible allergy but did not connect it to Aleve. Then last week I started getting severe pain in my lower back & started worrying about kidney/liver problems which I know can happen with NSAIDS. Next my tongue and mouth started burning/tingling more and more. I stopped the Aleve, symptoms subsided. Because I was back in pain, I restarted the Aleve, only 1 pill twice a day and tongue/mouth numbness/tingling is right back. I will stop this medicine today. Although the medicine helped me greatly with my pain I'm afraid to take it any more because of the side effects. My legs are still swollen and rashy, my mouth sore/numb/tingly. I'm not allergic to any other drugs (except penicillin) or any other foods, etc. I will have to go back to the doctor and see what he can do to help me manage the pain of my arthritis. With Aleve I was able to work pretty normally instead of creeping about gingerly in constant pain, but I'm afraid to continue with this drug. F 60 120 days

1  headache and joint pain Severe itching in the hands, feet and scalp. I've taken Aleve off and on for a number of years and had absolutely no problems. About 3 weeks ago I took Aleve prior to going to sleep, but an hour later I was awake with severe itching in the hands. After about an hour and the use of a cortisone cream the itching went away. Didn't make the connection to Aleve. This time the itching was more severe and in more locations than just the hands. I made the connection thanks to the internet, took some Benadryl, and threw the rest of the Aleve away after warning both of my daughters who have taken Aleve for the last several years on a rather regular basis.  1  mestrual cramps instant itching of palms and bottoms of feet. itching spread throughout entire body. ears, throat, scalp, neck, groin - you name it. i was covered in bright red sunburn painful hives, my throat closed up, couldn't breathe. (am asthmatic, so inhaler alleviated this immediately.) my lower lip swelled up HUGE and i felt like someone put hot coals in my abdomen. took a zyrtec. itching, hives and breathing were in control within a couple of hours, however - severe abdominal pain did not subside for close to 12 hours. have had very similar reaction to advil, thus the switch to aleve. i took ONE pill. have all the sudden developed an allergy to aleve and advil apparently?? never had any of these issues before - just within the past 4-5 months. i would not recommend this medication to anyone.  1  Headache Face, neck, chest, back, hands, forearms and top of feet developed a BRIGHT red, burning hot rash. Have taken Aleve before without issue, but all of a sudden it seems that I'm allergic. Also experiencing slight skin swelling and fast, pounding heartbeat (the same kind of pounding you feel when you get scared). Took a Zyrtec as a precaution as well as a couple of puffs of my asthma pump just in case. Wasn't going to wait around for it to get worse. I usually take ibuprofen but picked up some Aleve without thinking. Have been taking it on and off for a few months without incident. This reaction came out of nowhere, within 30 minutes of taking the capsules. F 28 3 months

2  sore muscles from exercise about 15 min after taking one 220 mg caplet my feet and hands started to swell, burn, and itch. Broke out in hives, face/lips started to swell. Called 911 when my throat felt like it started to swell and felt like I was going to pass out. Took Benadryl and very bad effects subsided in about an hour, and did not have to go to hospital. I am not on other medications and very rarely take pain medications. I would like to know if aleve has been causing more allergic reactions in people compared to other types of pain medication.  1  Tendonitis I'd been prescribed a pain reliever for a moderate case of tendonitis. My PCP said that "anti-inflammatory Aleve" was the best one. So I took it three times and had no problems. (One pill per day, three separate days over the course of a week...never back to back). Then, I took one pill per day, two days in a row and that's when I had the reaction. Much like the others here...I've had itchy, red skin on my face, scalp, back, chest, and hands. My lips feel slightly swollen and sore. My eyes are red and irritated. I've had medicine-induced allergic reactions before and this is exactly what it's like. I've changed nothing in my diet, or other lifestyle...so it must be the Aleve. Bottom line...exercise caution WHENEVER taking anything new. What works wonders for some can cause havoc in others. Keep a list of your symptoms in a log so you can refer back to them later and keep your doctor informed. I've noticed that the doctors 'poo-poo' allergic reactions as normal course of business...so make sure you keep them in the loop. M 32 7 days

1  headache After a brief period of time after taking Aleve, I began to experience nausea and a rash on specific locations on my body. The rash burned and then itched. The spots were purple and three months later are still there. I am unable to get rid of them. I also experienced shortness of breath and I felt my heart was not beating correctly. I felt an overall tingling feeling and was anxious too. I thought I was going to die. I would not recommend this drug to anyone. Could be very dangerous. F 43 1 days

3  arthritis At the beginning, I was not aware of any negative side effects. Among the positive ones was getting rid of headaches. Gradually, side effects started appearing -- gas, stomach pain, loose stools, which still was not bad. Then I got vertigo and several nosebleeds, which stopped when I stopped taking Aleve and re-appeared after I restarted it. Now I am afraid to take it, but it worked great. I would still recommend Aleve short-term and in the lowest possible dose. F 56 9 years

1  non bacteriological prostatitis 45 mins after injesting I had a massive heavy pain in my stomach area. It felt like an burning anvil inside me. The pain was extremely excruciating. It brought me to my knees. I tried to vomit it up to no avail. The pain came in big waves and spread to my kidneys and lower intestine/groin area. There was no way to lay down or move to avoid this pain. I can say that it was the WORST pain I have ever experienced. It lasted close to three hours and gave me new insights on how people with terminal long lasting pain want to end their lives. My skin turned a shade of green, my eyes were sunken and my heart rate and breathing went up dramatically. All this from one little blue pill. Obviously I am allergic to this drug. I will never take it again. I will warn everyone I know about it. It was a horrendous experience that I went through alone. The only positive thing I can say is that it gave me new empathy for pain sufferers. M 36 1 times

1  for pain in back Took 2 & within 5 minutes horrible burning on palms & bottom of feet spreading all over my body with hives & welts, burning ears, strange bowl problems. Could not get to ER because of an ice. I was so scared & in great pain. Symptons started going away after an hour but skin looks burnt under one arm where welts were most severe. They should take this off the market. I have taken it before so was in shock this happened. F 65 1 days
