LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  severe periods, fibroids HOT FLASHES night sweats, Depression. This has really worked for me for the severe bleeding. The 1st shot lasted about 7 months, I have just had another one. I am at menopausal age and trying to get through this without surgery. This seems to be working for me. F 51 9 days

2  To prevent Breast cancer recurrence Crying spells, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, vaginal itching, decreased interest in sex, mood swings (depression, irritability, anxiety), hot flashes. The side effects of this medication can be extremely difficult, and the mood swings and crying spells can be a complete nightmare. The excellent news is that I have not had a recurrence. I have needed to strengthen my support system, so that I am attending various support groups so that I can weather the mood swings (depression, irritability, anxiety, crying spells). F 51 1 years

4  endo came back nausea, headaches (very minor) cold, joint soreness, sometimes dizzy, most going away. Had complete Hysto, due to severe endo 26 years ago and it keeps coming back. I'm also on aygestin (to aid with hot flashes mood swings). This has helped Tremendously !!!!!! I was having so many hot flashes, now, none. Some joint pain, but I keep active and that seems to help me. Much better than before I began treatment. I was scared to try this, but I'm very happy I did. Some mood swings, but had those anyway with menopause bearing down on me. F 50 3 months

3  Anemia, Fibroids, bleeding Hot Flashes and night sweats, worsening body aches (legs and back), joint pain, tiredness, weight gain, hard to exercise with these joint pains but I do regular yoga It stopped all bleeding and allowed me to recoup on my iron levels and it's great not having a period. I am thinking that I will now quit the drug and have a hysterectomy. It feels too risky to keep up this joint pain. Lupron is useful for some people in some situations, but one has to weight the positives with the side effects. F 50 8 months

3  severe endometriosis Weight gain, spotting after first monthly shot. Had 5th shot on May 15th because taking Lupron stopped the constant bleeding and alleviated the severe pain. Chose not to have radical hysterectomy, booked for May 1st, due to bowel involvement and to continue on Lupron; however, after my last shot, i got PNEUMONIA within 24 hours. Has anyone else come down with pneumonia right after the shot? F 50 5 months

2  Endo Some hair loss, weight gain, swollen hands and feet to the point I can't remove rings and shoes are very tight, some nights my feet hurt so bad I can't sleep, eyes feel puffy like I had been crying, hot flashes. I'm due for the second shot this week and don't think I will continue. The endo pain is gone for about a week now but the side effects aren't worth it. I'm used to the pain and would rather deal with that. F 50 1 months

1  Uterine Fibroids I experience severe hot flashes every 40 min and night sweats just as frequent with bouts of weakness and fatique. Sever pain and limited movement in my right arm and shoulder. Mood swings, periods of anger and confusion. This is not a drug I would recommend. The side effects are too horrific. I could only tolerate it for three months and I had my hysterectomy so that I could get off of the shot. Nasty experience. I was almost driven insane. I refused to take a shot in October, instead I had the surgery, but I still suffer from pain and stiffness in my right arm and shoulder with limited movement. I am barely able to dress myself, comb my hair, use the bathroom, etc. I am hoping things will get back to normal soon, F 50 3 months

5  excessive bleeding w/ large fibroid I suffer from anxiety. Nothing new, it just amplified it. I take an anti anxiety drug when needed. Slight 2-3 minute headaches occasionally. Not bothersome. Lost 4 pant sizes. No other side effects. I had my one month check up today. My doctor said wow! My fibroids were very large, one at 15cm that has already shrunk quite a bit in size. The other 2 are almost completely gone. I spot rarely. Nothing a lite tampon can't handle and not everyday. Before the shot, I bled everyday and at one point was hopitalized for a hemmorage. Lupron Depot has given me my life back. I will take a second shot on Jan. 4, 2011. It is very possible this treatment will put me in permanent menopause with no surgery required. F 49 30 days

4  Fibroids My uterus was full of tumors and it was the size of a 4 1/2 month pregnancy. I also had excessive bleeding and my periods were from 7 to 10 days. All the other docs wanted me to have a hysterectomy and I did not want to. The choice was mine and I decided to try the shots. I had 2 shots in 3 month intervals, Oct 2008 & April 2009. I was blessed no side effects and my body went into menopause. Then in Sept 2009 my periods started back again and I started with the same issues again. Right now I am back to square one. My doc had to medically retire and my new doc wants to do surgery. NO. I am going to try to shrink them naturally with herbs. Just search and there is a lot of information out there. I was blessed, no issues with this drug. It did what it was suppose to do but my new doc does not believe that I should try it again to shrink the fibroids. She believes that if your body is not ready for menopause this drug will not help. Also some research on my own shows that once Lupron Depot wears out of your system and everything kicks back in, that your tumors may be escalated in their growth. I don't know if this is true, but keeping my eyes open. F 49 6 months

4  prostate cancer Hot Flashes, Fatigue, Dependency(ie: when I am near the end of my 4 month cycle, my side effects are worse.) Neck & back pain, impotency(complete) Hot flashes. I feel terrible all over. Injection every 4 months. My doctor tells me it is up to me as to when I may stop the injections. Most take for only 3-5 years and if the cancer comes back...what then? Maybe some other treatments may work. I would like to know more about tistical removal. Seems to make more sense to me. M 49 3 years

3  Uterine Fibriods Joint pain in feet and fingers, hot flashes, strong headaches, anxiety, occasional bloating/gas (may be due to fibroids, though) blood pressure 160/107--never ever been that high! My doctor started me on high blood pressure meds. My doctor suggested 1/month injections for 3 months instead of one big injection in case I had really bad side effects. Good recommendation. I noticed that when I take my antidepressant (Lexapro 10 mg), I don't have hot flashes! The Lupron injections lessened the feeling of pressure in my lower abdomen, which was a big relief. I think it shrank my fibroids. Due to have hysterectomy on 12/06/10. F 49 3 months

3  breast cancer related therapy Hot flashes are bad but not horrible. The worst is migraines. I already have a 15 year history of migraines, which I manage successfully through diet and drug therapy. But now, I wake up every morning with a migraine. I wake up between 2:00 and 3:00 am and cannot go back to sleep after taking imitrex. I need to stay up for at least 2 hours...cannot lie down because that is what causes the headache. My hours are all messed up and I feel exhausted much of the time. I have to give it a 3 since I don't know how effective lupron will be in the long run. I am taking this drug to promote onset of menopause so I can take arimidex for breast cancer. Tamoxifen did not work for me as I had a recurrance of DCIS in 2 years. So since I still have periods I need to take lupron to stop them. Arimidex is not effective in pre-menopausal cases. I took a 1 month dose of lupron to test it out. Late in the month side effects began. Now I am on the 3rd month of my 3 month injection. Side effects are the same and I don't know if it is worth continuing unless I can get some relief. I am supposed to be on lupron for 5 years. So I suffer the side effects or risk breast cancer. F 49 4 months
