LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  Endometriosis Hot Flashes, Larger breasts with some soreness, slight moodswings, and mild depression and sexual dysfunction I have had 3 shots. After the second shot I have had NO pain. Before I was having pain every day and some of those pains were unbearable, making me double over. I am having some depression and moodswings but I just keep reminding myself and my husband. that it will only be 4 more months and that I can get through this. I just hope that when I do stop the shots that the pain won't come back. I really would like to get back to my normal life without pain or having to do more shots. The side effects are worth the outcome. At least the side effects from the shots are not interfering with my life like the pain was. F 31 3 months

4  severe endometriosis dull abdominal cramping, breast tenderness, acne really bad I had to have a partial hystorectomy. My right ovary and tube were left behind. My body was still producing estrogen so I had to go on the shots. My endometriosis was so bad that it was mimicing stage 4 ovarian and uterin cancer. My uterous had attached itself to the underlining of my stomach and back side of my abdominal wall and I was bleeding internally from lesions left and growing from the endometriosis. After surgery I noticed the pain was still severe, but after the first shot I noticed it to not be so bad. I've had only one shot and I appreciate the relief. Talking with my doctors ... as long as my body continues to produce estrogen I'll never get away from the endo. Estrogen feeds the endo. I hope this helps someone. F 31 2 weeks

4  Endometriosis Night sweats, hot flashes, mood swings, weight gain, bloating, depression, insomnia I won't say it wasn't an extremely difficult six months while I was getting monthly injections, but I will say I think it was worth it. It took a long time to get my period back, and once I did, even though the cramping was awful, I didn't have any of what I like to call, episodes of pain. That's the get-rushed-to-the-emergency-room type of pain. As far as during the treatment, I remember the night sweats, hot flashes, and insomnia were unbearable in the beginning, but with add-back therapy it was manageable. The weight gain was disappointing (approx 30lbs), and I still haven't dropped any of it since my injections stopped, but I'm working on it. I recently researched natural therapy online, like vitamins and herbs, and I bought a boat-load of both. I am VERY happy with the results! The worst thing for me had been the complete lack of any metabolism even after the treatment. I continued to feel lazy, tired, and depressed. My stomach was unbelievably bloated all the time.  4  uterine fibroids I've been on lupron for two and a half months now. It seems to have helped to put an end to my constant bleeding and allowed my body to "catch up" on blood so I'm no longer anemic. Yay! I have noticed some pretty crazy mood swings, night sweats, hot flashes and worst of all joint aches. I over all feel better and am anxious to see if the fibroids have shrunk enough for my Dr. To remove them without another envasive surgery. I would hope anyone who may be put on lupron can have an honest and open discussion with their Dr about the drug and it's side effects. I have read that being on lupron for long amounts of time can cause bone loss and other side effects down the line. If you have worries talk to your Dr openly and if you still have reserves get a second opinion. I'm happy it has seemingly helped me with my fibroids and hope others can benefit from it also.  3  Endo Hair loss, hotflashes, mood changes, joint pain I have been pain free for 2 months now. Getting ready to take my final 3 month injection. My only concern now is the hair loss. Has anyone else had hair loss and does it grow back? F 31 3 months

3  uterine fibroids I have been having hot flashes, nervousness, mild headache, night sweats, mood swings I will be on Lupron for 3 months. I have taken my second injection. After the first injection when I had my check up, the fibroid reduced by 2.5cm and I am hoping that at the end of the 3 month dosage the fibroid will shrink even more, before I go in for surgery. I had a miscarriage in the 17th week, fibroid being the main cause of the miscarriage. I am hoping that I will be able to conceive once I get done with my surgery and have no further bad pregnancies due to fibroids. F 31 1 months

2  endometriosis While on it: hot flashes (nearly froze my family by opening window in winter); headaches (once requiring trip to emergency room); complete and total exhaustion Those are the symptoms that stick out most It's been over 2 years since having the treatment and, while I've had migraines since puberty hit, they've graduated to causing lesions on my brain (I'm going to have my neurologist make sure it's not cerebellar endometriosis, however, to be sure) and I've become forgetful, lost my previously great ability to multi-task and have recently experienced numbness and walking into corners, etc. To be fair, I'm not sure how much of the neurological symptoms have to do with the Lupron specifically but those symptoms have either shown up and/or gotten progressively worse since the treatment. Also, the exhaustion has not gone away really at all. I was told it goes away after about 6 months after the final dose. Over 2 years later, I still fight it and cannot maintain enough energy to get myself back in shape to keep up with my 3-yr old. It has improved a bit but only after having a Reiki attunement and doing self-healings. That said, it's still a significant struggle and my dizziness has increased as I try to get the most of the little energy increase I had. Would I recommend it? Considering that myself and my adopted sister have had these complications with Lupron, I'd advise against it. If a patient feels the benefits to her/his condition outweigh the potential risks, however, I'd advise putting her/his doctor "under the light" and asking every question possible about the risks and side effects. If she/he has any reservations, she/he should go with her/his F 31 6 months

2  endometriosis I had severe cramps since i started my cycles.Always fainting when my period started and nausea.Extremely heavy cycles, and misdiagnosed as just cramps.First cyst removed laproscopically -and put on birth control pills-I had a blood filled cyst.Six months later new cysts and second lap including major lazer surgury of ovaries, bladder, bowel erea, and uterus.Cyst ruptured during my first surgury and i feel let more endometrial fluid into my abdomen.Took 3 months of shots.By 3rd shot i was put in hospital****yes a mental hospital.I could not stop crying, couldnt sort my own laundry(too overwhelming)constant worry about stupid stuff and would stay stuck with cycling thinking same thing over and over.My head felt like bugs crawling on my skull after each shot. After first shot that night i had night sweats.By 2nd shot could never keep clothes on constant taking off due to burning heat from inside my body.I wasnt eating and by the third shot i was insane.Put inpatient because i was severely depressed and going crazy.I had inverted female anatomy all dry and no chest- everything shrunk.Forget about sex i was a crazy person- who would wanna be with me? and i didnt want to.If i would have felt better i couldn't due to dryness.I had a failed relationship due to this drug and to this day i have mental health issues ,joint pain and my thoughts are always scattered. My shots were in the late 90's I was not told about any side effects other than dryness and hot flashes.I apparently had depression or bi polar disorder and this drug brought me to the worst level or thatproblem i didnt know i had.Losing your female hormones within 3 months as opposed to 8 years ..the normal rate or menapause....will drive anyone nuts.I am sure their will be a small group of people this drug will not affect them.I am envious of you.I also had floaters in both of my eyes and extreme fatigue.Listen if you wake up and you don't want to eat or breathe....and you are worrying about if someone stole your socks out of the washing machine while you sleep at the mental hospital you took LUPRON.I have never had a problem that severe since nor did i ever before.I am not saying i didn't have issues,i had depression on a smaller scale and some very happy times& some mood swings and some anger.I was also taking birth control pills that have hormones.....they affect you also.I still take them and cross my fingers i don't need more surgury.Adhesions from scar tissue and bladder pain and uterine pain are a part of my life now.Including my worsened mental health from this drug. You ask any member of my family and they will tell you this drug did something to me.I mean i was too out of it to know the difference.I begged for the rest of my shots...when i was starving to death and a wacko.I wanted endo gone at no matter what cost.In the end i was put on estrogen pills to counter react the shot(i flipped out who wants estrogen when it makes endo grow faster???) and thrown in a hospital.I would say it took 6 months to feel almost myself again.I am covinced i will never be 100% I would take this drug despite all i have said happened to me because as of this date Aug 21,2005 I have not needed another surgury. However i may give the credit to my doctor ...maybe he removed all the endo.Since i can't be sure i guess it was worth it to not have the contracting pain 24 -7 like i used to .Hard to believe i can sit here and say i would still take this drug after being in a mental hospital for 2 weeks and home therapy for a month !!!!I am telling you i was messed up for a long time even after being home..years i was still not feeling really normal.I still suffer mentally,I still have pain...just not as bad....birth control helps also-(has it's own list of side effects). And diet....get books on topic.Go to natural food store, evening primrose oil is good .Stay away from soy and greasy stuff, and low salt & caffeine.Last word get help if you are depressed God only knows what would have happened to me...if no one noticed how ill i was. best health and good wishes.  1  Endometriosis/Infertility Severe hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, weight gain 25lbs., joint pain, muscle pain, mood swings, memory loss. Taking Lupron was the worst mistake I ever made! I'm still suffering from muscle pain, achey joints, stiffness, memory loss & can't lose any weight. My last shot was Nov.05 and still can't get any answers from any doctors. I will research Lupron and the manufacturer and do everything I can to help others that are going through this too. 09/19/06 F 31 6 months

1  Endo Just let me say OH MY GOSH. I had previously taken Lupron when I was 25 for treatment of Endo after having surgery. This go around, my Gyno started me out with a 3 month injection! By the time I had to go back for my next 3 month injection, I thought that I needed to be in a mental hospital. I would start to cry and could not stop! The mood swings were horrible! I was mad at the world, and nothing could make me happy! All I wanted to do was sleep, because I felt so exhausted. I just hurt everywhere. I felt sorry for my children and my poor husband, I think that I could have killed him several times. The night sweats were awful, and I had to put fans everywhere! The people that work with me in a small law office started wearing jackets and keeping heaters in their office! I didn't gain any weight, I think that I sweated so much it helped. I will NEVER do it again! I'd rather have surgery. Needless to say, I did not take the 2nd injection, and my Gyno actually told me I needed to see a t I have not had my first period after coming off the Lupron, I'm waiting to see how that goes. I have also made an appt. with another Gyno, in another city to discuss other options! To anyone considering taking this, make sure that your docter will give you something for depression! Mine wouldn't, and this drug is dangerous! F 31 3 months

1  Endometriosis Hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia weight gain, fluid retention, depression. It was discovered that I had severe endometriosis during a laporascopy that was performed for a the removal of an ovarian cyst. A surgery that was to only last for an hour and 1/2 turned into a 4 hour ordeal as my surgeon excised scar tissue that had adhered itself from my bowel to my abdomenal wall, appendix, etc. I was told that a three month cycle of injections would help tremendously. I am not taking my 3rd and final injection as I just cannot handle this for another few months (understand that the effects of the medicine linger for 2 months following your last injection).  5  Endometriosis Hot flashes (even worse since I had my last shot 5 weeks ago!), moody, loss of sex drive, weight gain all around my mid-section (I've never had that) and no energy! I just finished my 6 months of treatment 5 weeks ago. (Sept. 05 - Feb. 06) This is my second round of Endo, but my first time to take Lupron. It was on my colon this time which was excruciating! I'm waiting on my period to come back so I'll really know how much it helped! My husband and I are going to start "trying" as soon as I get my cycle back on track. Couple of questions for the veterans: 1. How long did it take to get your period back after the 6 months of Lupron? 2. Did anyone try to conceive right after their treatment? Did you conceive easily? (I do not have any children) 3. Does having a baby REALLY help with Endo? Sorry, I just found this site today! I'll keep looking through the posts to see if I can find my answers. Thanks!  5  had partial hysterectomy-endo / lack in sex drive- hot flashes -but I take hormones so I don't have those.. bloating for three days after I have shot.. I had a partial hysterectomy but because I was only 27yrs he wanted to keep my ovaries- After 5 mths of bad swelling of my left side and very bad yeast infections the week before (when my period use to be.) The doctor put me on lupron and all of the swelling and infections went away.. I love this med. it has allowed me to live again after 7mths of Hell --- I can only be on it for 3years(almost there) then I'll have to go and get my ovaries removed --which is scary since last time it took so long for me to feel better. If anyone reads this and has any suggestions please e-mail me at [email protected] Thanks F 30 2.5 years

5  Shrink Endometriosis for surgery Hot flashes and night sweats I know this drug has a bad reputation so I am writing a good review. I took this drug for four months after my first laproscopy in preperation for my second surgery to shrink what endo was growing on my bladder. This drug significantly shrunk the endo so my surgeon did not have to do extensive work or remove any part of my bladder. It made my surgery easier and certainly less stressful. I suffered hot flashes on and off, but thats about it. I didn't experience any weight gain, but I workout 5-6 days a week and maintained a healthy diet while on this drug. F 30 4 months

5  Endometriosis mild hot flashes (evening primrose really helped), loss of sex drive, and a lot of weight gain. Had one injection/month for six months. Purpose was to see how I would handle a hysterectomy. Completely lost the pain within the first month and side effects were almost non exsistent by the third shot. Gained 15 pounds in 3 months but doc says if you gain on the shot, it's a good indication you will continue to gain with menopause. 10 wks after last injection, I still have no period but my breasts hurt and the pain is back full force. Would continue Lupron if I could afford it. Being pain free is worth the minimal side effects. The shot was better than surgery. Too bad it's only temporary. F 30 6 months

4  Endometriosis Mild hot flashes, breast shrinkage, fatigue, some moodiness, lack of sex drive, vaginal dryness I wanted to post a note on this site because the comments scared me half to death before I started taking. It hasn't been bad at all for me, and I'm 4 months into the monthly shots. Two more to go. The hot flashes are not bad at all. My main complaint is my complete lack of interest in sex anymore, so all in all not much to complain about at all. Don't be scared to take this drug if your doc recommends it. F 30 4 months

4  Endometriosis - Stage VI Intensified menstrual pain, Hot flashes, Insomnia, Headaches I had my first shot on Nov 7. I didn't experience any side effects whatsoever until Nov 22, when I began my "cycle" eight days earlier than I had expected. The pain was debilitating for two solid days. I also began having hot flashes, headaches, and insomnia during that time. It hasn't even been a month since my first shot, but I'm seriously considering getting on the add-back therapy. If anyone has any advice about doing that, or not doing that, please email me. Even though I sound negative about Lupron, it can't be worse than what I've been going through before it, so I'm happy to have hope. F 30 2.5 weeks

4  Endometriosis depression resulting in a near nervous breakdown, joint pain, near-total loss of sexual appetite, weight gain, mental dullness, general tiredness I'm not sure how to rate it since I still have side effects- 2 1/2 months after supposed end of treatment still waiting on a period. After a lap to excise endo tissue and right ovary, doc strongly suggested lupron for my future fertility. I had 2 of the 3 month injections, took progest add-back, calcium supp's and vitamins, worked out 3 to 4 days a week and did yoga. 2 weeks after 1st injection I had the mega-period everyone has; but first 3 months were pretty much cake. But 2nd injection wreaked havoc. Became out of control depressed near breakdown and went on antidepressants for 3 months, tho' now off and better. Previously minor joint paint worsened, and I was very tired and mentally fuzzy, much ditzier than normal. Due to a schedule change at work I couldn't get to the gym more than 1 or 2 days a week but I kept doing yoga, which sortof helped. What's weird is being "off" it now for 2 1/2 months and I still have some symptoms worse than before. Going off progesterone a F 30 8 months
