LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  Endo, Cysts I had every side effect listed. Rare and Common. The first time in 10 years, I have been without pain. However, I would not do it again if I had it to do over. I read this site before I started, but I thought it would be worth it to be pain free. BEWARE:This stuff effects your entire body,(it is not just Hot flashes). Read as much as you can, and then read more before you try this medicine. After I finished my 6th shot I thought I was dying, My body's immune system turned against itself and for 2 weeks I could not get out of bed, eat, or sleep. Vicoden and Advil would not stop my bone, joint pain. I felt like I was 80. It is now 3 months later, and my bones still hurt, but my sex drive returned and my memory, so it seems to be leaving my body. Periods are back. My doctor says TTC when they return to normal. I hope to get myself totaaly back in shape and loose the 30 lbs I gained on it and to get healthy. I now have a whole new outlook on life from this Drug. I now know, what it will be like to get old, and I am going to take be F 30 6 months

1  Stage III Endometriosis Hot flashes, depression, severe dyspnea (weight gain) I only took one shot of Lupron (as it was given to me without my permission while I was still sedated from my lap). While the first week was tolerable, the second week I experienced escalating episodes of breathing difficulty, peaking at around 2.5 weeks after the injection. All I could do was lay in bed in order to control my breaths, and perform basic tasks to take care of myself and my 3-year old son. While this is not a documented side effect of Lupron, it is the only factor in my life that changed that could have caused this. My RE tried to pass it off as panic attacks, but this was not the cause; it was more like exercising and being incredibly short of breath. Five weeks after the shot, I finally began to feel like normal. I had the shot on 6/15 and I still rarely experience this problem. I also began by taking Norethindrone to assist with hot flashes, but had to stop due to feelings of depression. I also had a period two weeks after the shot, even though I had just had a F 30 1 months

1  Endo, fibroids, ovarian cysts. Hot flashes, moodswings, irratibility, depression, loss of sex drive, weight gain, acne, forgetfulness, fatigue, bowel problems, night sweats accompanied with horrible dreams. Did I miss anything? I am on my third shot. Would not recommend it, but everyone is different. My first shot I had a period for over 2 weeks with every symptom I have discribed. I have been on the addback therapy or Northindrone. My Dr. upped it from 5mg to 10mg to help with the bleeding. It helped after my 2nd shot but moodswings and depression came on tenfold. I have been having periods every 2 - 3 weeks which are always accompanied with severe abdominal cramping. I was just given my 3rd round 2 weeks ago. All I can say is that I feel like I did when they found my Endo, my tumor and my cysts that I lost an ovary because of. I will be honest, during the 2nd shot I had almost a week where I felt good, but thats about it. I would really just like my life and my sex drive back. F 30 3 months

1  endo/ 7 surguries/ eptopic pregnanc Trying to get my life back!!! Support, understanding and options are our main concern. Please feel free to contact me to discuss. I am a 30 yr young female simple ole me trying to get my life back. I have a huge history of endo and surguries and 16 doctors in 12 years I was actually looking on line for a site that had more info on the lupron because even though i am on my last injection (7 month treatment) i couldnt believe the way i feel is not related to that shot and none of the dr’s or websites i had come across was saying anything more than a few side effects UNTIL last night when i stubled on the same site you did with all of these negative comments. When consulting a lawyer for a misdiagnosis for several months complaining about pain turned out to be a DEAD twisted no blood flow ovary i wanted to sue just to get that dr to brush up on her skills the lawyer said something to me that will stick with me forever "you know what they call a dr at the top of his class?, I was so excited just to know it wasn’t just me going crazy or something else wrong…seems like everyone is going through exactly what I am. the thing is though i wish i had someone to talk to 12 yrs ago. there is so much more to our problem than just the lupron. i would love to talk to you about some of the things i have been through and some of the other people i know now and what they have been through. Not to mention depending on your history so far with this illness makes all the differnce to your strategy to get well. Did you know the doctors don't know where this comes from, they dont know why NJ hudson county has the largest number of women in the state that have been diagnosed with endo. And most of them damn sure dont know what to do about it...i have learned from experience to interview my dr's now by asking a few questions lets you know if they really know what they are talking about. Please give me a call if you like and again you can block your number if that& F 30 7 months

1  endometriosis hot flashes, 60 lbs weight gain, acne, fatigue, leg aches, intolerance to temperature, excessive sleepiness (I can sleep for 14 hours straight), inability to lose weight. side effects don't go away...even after 3 years. I took a dose of lupron only once. It did nothing for my pain relief, but it messed me up really well. In addition to suffering from daily pain, I gained 60 lbs and am constantly uncomfortable in my environment because of hot flashes and just not finding the perfect temperature. My legs developed an ache that seems to go down to my bones. It's been 3 1/2 years since I got this stupid shot and I still haven't lost a pound no matter what I try, and I still have hot flashes, leg aches and my sleeping problems. This drug really ruined my life. I was 27 when I took it. Now I have less energy than my 87 year old grandmother. I know I will never have children. I've lost all hope. DO NOT take this drug.  1  Endometriosis Weight gain - 20 lbs! Hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness. This was the beginning of 2003, I started the year/Lupron at 125 lbs, and ended it at 145 lbs. And I was excersizing 5x a week! I had tons of hot flashes and night sweats, plus vaginal dryness. I had had a surgery to remove adhesions before going on the Lupron, and after I went off it, I decided not to go on birth control or anything else, and my periods were much shorter than they had originally been (3 days instead of 7) with 1 day of cramps instead of 4. Most of the weight just came off on its own once I was off the Lupron. BUT - I recently had an mri for something else and they discovered an 8-10 cm endometrioma! The first surgery had been laproscopic, this time I had to get a surgery with a laparotomy incision, which is about 7 inches across - to remove it. I spent an entire week in the hospital - it was sooo painful. Plus they took out my right ovary which was totally consumed by endometrial tissue. So much for the idea that the Lupron/first surgery had helped! Now I am F 30 1 years

5  Endometrosis/Fibroids/Cysts Hot Flashes at night, tired I honestly felt better taking this med. No more severe and painful cramps to where I couldn't go anywhere; no more heavy bleeding cycles and waiting around at home for a week for it to stop;I recently had another laproscoptic surgery to drain a F 29 6 months

5  Severe Endo Hot flashes, Mood Swings, head aches I have been on Lupron for about three years now. This to me is a WONDER DRUG. I was in so much pain before this I had my appendix burst and thought it was the endo. The bleeding was so bad I would pass out from blood loss. Now I can do what ever I want when I want.My endo is controlled and am now getting ready to try IVF. I would never had made it this long with out Lupron. (I know I sound like an ad for the med - but it's true.) The side affects where tough to get use to. But the pain I was in was unbearable, headaches are nothing compare to what I was feeling and the hot flashes are very rare. F 29 3 years

4  Endometriosis This is my 2nd post. I had horrible depression, hotflashes, headaches, and never slept. However, estrogen add-back patch eliminated most of these. If you have severe side-effects, don't give up. If you only other option is a hysto at a very young age, try the shot combined w/the add back patch! I went thru 6 months of shots, have been off for 4 months. I have not started my bc pill, but have no symptoms/pain/bleeding. It was tough going through it, but I believe it did do some good. Not 100% sure I would do it again. I have a supply of pain killers/ muscle relaxers for when my period starts up. I recommend after the injections, take a month or so off from all hormones, bc pills if you are not having pain/bleeding. I went against my doctors advice and did just that, as my body needed a break. I feel better than ever for the time being--better than I have in years. I know that I may face more surgeries/therapies, but so far, I'm doing ok. F 29 6 months

4  Endometriosis hot flashes, head aches, body aches, loss of appetite, hair loss, nausea, fatigue, insomnia, mood swings, memory loss, homeostatic imbalance Lupron is a hard drug, but worth it. I just got my second shot and pressing through. The side effects are numerous but bearable compared to the endo pain. I have extensive endo and it caused me to have severe body and reproductive pain, seizures, breathing problems etc for over ten years. I have sene over 40 MDs. Adopting a Candida diet helps me manage the pain along with prayer, positive thinking, and wise planning. F 29 6 weeks

4  endo hot flashes, moodiness I have struggled with migraines for the last 6 years, sometimes having 3-4 headaches a month, lasting 5 days at a time. However, I've only had 1 migraine the whole 5 months I've been on lupron! I haven't had any weight gain or loss in my sex drive. This is good stuff! F 29 6 months

4  moderate endometriosis I had SEVERE mood changes at first, like the worst PMS I ever had - like I was mad at everyone and everything. I got a Rx for prozac - I wouldn't have made it if it weren't for that. With 10mgs a day, I feel like my normal self again. I have had break-through bleeding the entire time off and on, even with taking progesterone supplements. It's not a lot, just enough to be annoying. I am a virgin so I'm not sure if my sex drive has been affected. I have two months to go on the lupron, and I'm getting married in four months, so hopefully I'll be back to some sort of predictable schedule soon once I get back on regular birth control. I have definitely had hot flashes, which has dramatically cut my heating bill :) Take it in the winter time if you have a choice! It's not that bad - it will definitely be worth it if I can have kids one day! F 29 6 months

4  Breast Cancer - estrogen related Hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, fatigue, severe joint pain, substantially decreased sex drive, vaginal dryness, severe mood swings and weight gain. I hate that I have to be on this drug. I swear the first 3 months I was going crazy. After my first 3 shots I was an emotional mess for at least 24 hours, crying uncontrollably. I have had four shots now, and have gained 20lbs even though I eat well and excerise. When I get out of bed I feel like an old women. The joint pain is to the point were I will have to start taking pain meds. Hot flashes can kiss my ass. I haven't slept in 4 years(Between chemo, radiation and Lupron) Although I have found that sleeping naked with a fan directly on you with a light down comforter has made it a lil better. I only wake up 4 times instead of 20! I was never moody, now you never know what you might get! And the decrease in sex is killing my boyfriend! F 29 1 years

4  Infertility due to Endo Very mild hot flashes - maybe three a day and night. Zero libido. Other than that, not bad at all. Was very scared about the shot after I received it and read the reviews but in all honesty I have not experienced any terrible side effects. The hot flashes are very tolerable and do not disrupt my day. Night sweats are a bit harder because they do wake me up several times a day. The libido thing...well its not a big problem for me as it is for my husband. I surely hope it works for me, right now its hard to tell because even though I had bad endo (removed most of it by laparoscop) I never had sever pain so I cant say that it cured my pain. I guess I wont find out if it worked until after I am done with the therapy and I hope to become pregnant. F 29 6 months

4  post endometriosis surgery hot flashes, night sweats, forgetfulness, no sex drive I had tennis ball sized endometriomas removed from each ovary. Lupron was give to me post-operatively to help prevent endometriomas from returning. Side effects are not so bad..I have hot flashes about every 15-30 minutes but I stay hydrated and keep 2 fans on my desk at work. That seems to help some. The hot flashes are a piece of cake compared to the pain I was in before my surgery. F 29 1 months
