LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  Endometriosis & Fibroids - Head Ache (severe) - Unstable Emotions (accelerates any minor mental illness into a major illness) - Insomnia (Extremely severe multiple days without sleep) - Heavy Period - Dr communicated it would last three months to shed uterine lining. - Loss of appetite - Hot Flashes - Chills -Random Sweats (All hours of the day) -Lower body temperature (random) Doctors often do not disclose all of the symptoms, because they believe in the medicine. My doctor told me I would have hot flashes at night and heavy periods for the first three injections. He never told me about chills, insomnia and etc. The insomnia is the worst part of the injections, because you don't just have trouble falling asleep you have trouble sleeping. If you fall asleep for more than two or three hours on this medicine you are very lucky! F 34 6 weeks

4  Endometriosis Headaches, slight weight gain, facial hair I was diagnosed with stage 3/4 endo during lap. I have multiple IUI and 1 IVF failure. The doc suggested lupron depot for 3 months before next IVF suggesting it will quieten the endo and help in mt next ivf cycle. I have just finished my 3rd shot and my IVF starts in 2 weeks. I was on add back with oestrogen pills and progesterone, so I had periods every month but the pain got lesser each month. I could not function before my periods earlier and used to have horrible clotting and headaches. Now I do not need painkillers, atleast for the past 2 cycles. I do not know if it will help with my IVF. I will find out in a month. But I had none of the side effects I was scared about. I have felt totally normal while on lupron, probably a little better in terms of my energy level and mood. I wish I had not been so scared of this medicine. Also- to add, I was also on calcium supplements. F 34 3 months

4  endometriosis My hot flashes started during the second month of treatment. I had three and four a day for a while. Now that I am in third/forth month of treatment, I have only one or two a day. In addition, I have zero sex drive and vaginal dryness, but we're working though that. Thank goodness it is only temporary. Two things that worried me were 1) increase in facial hair and 2) weight gain. Neither has happened! However, I have maintained a regular exercise routine throughout my treatment. I take my forth and final shot Feb. 6, 06. This shot is to last three months and then I am free to try to get pregnant! I have experience unexplained infertility since 1997. (I have two children, one bio and one adopted.) With no symptoms of endometriosis, my doctors (and me) never thought exploratory surgery was necessary. I was treated for many years for PCOS. We did the surgery in 05 just to check it off the list and my doctor found lots of endo that she says I've had a long time (my bio daughter is 5.) So, I'm telling everyone to have the surgery just to see. We were certainly surprised. My doctor said I had too much endo to zap, so we're in the middle of this lupron treatment. Hopefully it works!  4  endo Hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia - woke up every two hours, loss of appetite, anxious I just completed my 6 month course for endo. Lupron has been the only thing that has helped give me relief. I have been pain free since I started. I have been very happy with the outcome. Before - I lived my life on advil, motrin, heating pads and whatever else I could find to give me relief.Lupron has been great for the relief of pain. The side effects are frustrating and irritating, but I feel better and that is what counts. I just had to gut up and push myself through the side effects. I slept with a fan on my face at night , carried a mini fan in my purse for the day , always dressed in layers and took a antidepressent to help with the mood swings. I did not gain weight - if anything I lost weight due to no appetite. F 34 6 months

4  Fibroids Feelings of warmth (not full-fledged I am currently on my 2nd round of Lupron. I took the first round in 2000 before having surgery to remove my fibroids. Lupron worked great!! Occassional feelings of warmth were my only side effects, and I don't think they'd qualify as being F 34 6 months

4  Endometriosis I had hot flashes after the second injection that continued until about four weeks after my final (sixth) injection, also weight gain of about 5 pounds per month. 3.75 Lupron Depot was a life saver in my book. I can always go to the gym and lose the weight I gained but the pain it stopped I couldn't do that on my own. I still don't have my period back yet and it's been to months now, but I can live with that. F 34 6 months

4  Fibroid Tumor Hot Flashes, mood swings, irritability, night sweats, cold chills, loss of appetite, depression, memory loss. I am on the second shot out of three and I feel my symptoms are getting more intense. I take the last shot on Nov. 22nd and scheduled for surgery on Dec. 16th. The hot flashes, insomnia, and mood swings are all increasing. It's 2:20 am as I post this message due to the insomnia. I don't even like myself because I can see and feel how I act but I can't control it. I can't wait until this is over. If you need the therapy I say do it. Just keep in mind that once your treatment is over you will be yourself again. It has stoped the growth of the fibroid, and taken away the abdominal bloating I had. My abdomin was getting so large I had to buy a bigger size. I also don't have the heavy feeling like I was carrying a bowling ball around. Those are the good points. I take an anti-depressant but these symptoms seem to over power the medication. F 34 2 months

4  Endometriosis Hot Flashes, Night sweats, headaches, fatigue, irratibility, anxiety I posted at 1 month, really disappointed. I am now 4 months in and most side effects have diminished other than the hot flashes. It has helped tremendously with the pain. Those of you in early stages, if you can bear with it, it may improve. The hot flashes are inconvenient but its worth it F 34 4 months

4  endo Hot flashes, mood swings, no sex drive I didn't and don't mind the side effects, because it took away the pain, but it's been almost 9 weeks since I had my last shot and I still have no period, no signs either. My husband and I went another baby ASAP and I'm starting to get upset that it's been so long that I'm off the shot and we still can't start trying until I get my period back. F 34 6 months

3  Catamenial Pneumothorax-Endo Headaches, hot flashes, severe mood swings, crying spells, breast tenderness, dry skin, thinning hair, abdominal pain, weight fluctuation, irritability and suicidal thoughts. I have endometriosis and by some pathway in the body, the cells travels and attaches to my lung. There it stays. During my cycle, those cells will menstruate, and at times, tear the lung wall and cause a hole, therefore a collapse will occur. Now, I have no cycles, and no more lung collapses. Although, it is working, the seriousness of this drug scares me. You have horrible physical and MENTAL side effecrs. It has affected my job, my relationship with my boyfriend, my family and my friends. My doctor wants me to go another year! I don't know if I can do that, not sure my body can handle. I wish there was another alternative to treating this disease. This drug should not be available, this way we can push for more aggresive research, to help solve the enigma. F 34 1 years

2  Multiple Fibroids, anemia Muscle aches, joint pain, weakness, some confusion, horrible yeast infections with strong chemical smelling discharge. Had yeast infection of the breast for the first time with same strong odor. Hot flashes, sweating. Brittle hair. Headaches from the first two injections then they went away. Almost lost my job. FYI: www.chemocare.com/bio/lupron_depot.asp I never had a problem with body odor. I had to continually get prescriptions of Diflucan to treat the yeast infections. I found out that the muscle aches and joint pain caused by Lupron is because some medications cause inflammation. Taking anti-inflammatory medicines helps some. I was tired of taking so many medicines, so I went natural. Lemon water with Cayenne pepper. I drank three or more bottles of that every day for about a month and the severe muscle aches and joint pain left. I would just pour it into a water bottle and drink it throughout the day. For some the cayenne pepper might increase your hot flashes, but drinking extra regular water will help. Cayenne pepper is an anti-inflammatory. I don't know if that will flush out the medicine, I doubt it but I know I got relief from pain and stiffness without the other drugs like ibprofen and tylenol types that can also slightly reduce the affects of the Lupron. Either way it helped reduce the side affects and my iron levels increased from the lupron because I didn't have a period at all. That was great! Worst part, I almost lost my job because I was so sick. I was harassed until I told them I was on a chemo drug. Then they backed off after I provided documentation from my doctor. I hated that because it is a personal situation. Lupron is a Chemo therapy drug. Which is ok, except my doctor played down the whole treatment thing. The fibroids did not shrink except one, but not to make a difference. It was worth a shot. F 34 6 months

2  Fibroids, Heavy Periods, Anemia Headaches, nausea, vomiting, hot flashes, yeast infections, severe muscle stiffness and pain, joint pain, severe weakness, and exhaustion. First of all I went on a 6 month treatment of Lupron Depot to shrink the fibroids. I am in month 5 and had a follow up done early to check the status. They have remained stable and there is no shrinkage. I have almost lost my job because of the horrible side affects. The only thing I love is not having a period every month. I am disappointed that my doctor did not tell me the truth about all the side effects, because I did ask. What I also was not told was that Lupron Depot is a chemotherapy drug. Even that bit of knowledge would have given me an idea of what might to expect. I did my research first but didn't find that. When I called back to ask the nurse about the side affects, she said that most people don't have them and of course you were going to find all the negative information on the internet. Well, I see why people would post the negative. Not many physicians are owning up to the horrible side effects. I agree going thru this temporary to fix the overall problem. But it looks like in my case it hasn't helped. If any thing I am hoping that perhaps it stopped them from growing more. --Trying to think positive.-- Any how I still have to have surgery, I was hoping that Lupron would have shrunk the fibroids so that I could have smaller incisions and less blood loss.
