LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  Fibroids, heavy bleeding, anemia Extremely emotional, lots of crying, mood swings, hot flashes, weight gain, cravings for sweets, 2 weeks of heavy anxiety, irritability, daily mild to moderate depression, confusion, have become very forgetful, haven't lost my job yet but every day seems to be a struggle. I'm also taking uņa de gato and guanabana leaves teas from Peru to shrink the fibroids. I experienced an abnormal period on Jan 11th. I lost 1/2 of my blood in 2 days which was caused by the fibroid(s) I didn't know I had. I have at least 2 submucosal fibroids: the largest one is 6.5cm long in the front of the uterus and the second one is 3cm big on the back of the uterus. There are other smaller fibroids in the uterus but not significant in size at the moment. My doctor believes that the 3cm fibroid is the one that caused the unstoppable bleeding which made me anemic. In two days of heavy bleeding Jan 11th-12th, my hemoglobin count dropped to 6.4 and I received 2 points of blood transfussion to bring it up to 8. I also had surgery on Jan 13th to remove the blood clots which were preventing the uterus from shrinking. After that surgery, I was given shots of methyrgene/pills to shrink my uterus prior to the 11.25mg 3 month supply lupron depot shot. One month since Jan 11th, my hemoglobin reading has gone up to 12.2 which categorizes me non-anemic. I have an ultrasound visit at the end of March to determine if all fibroids are less than 3cm to do the next internal surgery to remove them. Otherwise, open surgery will be required. Due to the severe side effects I experienced for about 2 weeks between Jan 30th and Feb 11th, my GYN recommended me not to go for the 2nd shot, but I might object to her decision as long as lupron depot shows being effective in the Mar F 32 3 months

3  endometriosis hot flashes, mood swings, severe headaches, body aches, joint pain, tired all the time I have only taken 2 shots and have not had a period, The first month was questionable for me, I was miserable but after over 3yrs of painful periods I was willing to try anything now.......I just want a hysterectomy, I have had 3 wonderful boys with no plans of having anymore kids and am not looking forward to pain coming back. I had my last shot 09/18/06 and it is now 10/26/06 and still no period but lots of cramping. I have had migraines like never before and although cramping is not as bad right now it is getting worse as time goes on. I only agreed to the shot because my Dr was not willing to do the hysterectomy until i tried this. F 32 2 months

3  endometriosis Hot Flashes, joint pain, memory, concentration, moodiness, dry skin, acne, nausea, weight gain, tiredness. The first injection I had the surge in emotions and hot flashes. I did not have any pain until I was late getting my injection (the third one) and I had heavy bleeding and horrible cramping. Prior to trying the shot I tried birth control and alternative treatment dong quai. I used Estroven to try to help it helped a little during my treatment the hot flashes were not as bad and frequent. I did not use the add back therapy because of epilepsy and the meds I was taking for treatment. I would not recommend this treatment unless absolutely necessary and a last resort. My sex drive was gone and vaginal dryness was the worse. Trying so many products to treat the side effects was rather expensive. I had my last injection a few days ago. I am just glad to be finish last injection early this month and I will not be doing a second round. The hot flashes has been worse like I am sweating bullets. The side effects had a horrible effect on my relationship and my health. I dont want to go through menopause again! At times it also felt like I was still having PMS it probably was the moodiness. I am looking forward to my system going back to that of a 32 year old woman. I just hope they find another way to treat endometriosis. There needs to be more information and treatment available for endometriosis for the sake of all women that have severe endometriosis and pain. This is the first site I have seen that has any current information. F 32 6 months

3  Endometreosis Two hot flashes so far, mood swings this is the only one that is really getting to my husband and kids, night sweats this is still real bad, lack of sex drive, but others times seems like i can't get enough, joint aches, and last but not least and the worst so far is the insomnia, oh this has been horrible. I have been on this shot for three months now and am two weeks away from my next shot, It as not been that bad. I have lost weight, and the size of my stomache has gone done, it looks like I had a lot of swelling in my upper abdominal region. I have no idea what to expect with the next two shots but hopefully it will not be too bad. F 32 90 days

2  Large fibroid Tired all day, insomnia, terrible mood swings and road rage, hot flashes that feel like you are being microwaved and hungry all the time. Weight gain. I just took my second shot last week and had to get anti anxiety pills as well to help curb the crazy side effects. After to first shot I could hardly stay awake during the day. About 2:00 every day I had to take a nap. After Bout 3 weeks the insomnia and complete crazyness kicks in. I'm afraid I might say or do something at work that can get me in trouble and I snap at just about everything. I went ahead and told my doctor there is no way I can do a third shot and scheduled the surgery for a little over a month from now. Hopefully the softball size tumor has shrunk and this crazy drug did what it is supposed to do. I would only recommend this drug as a last resort. I see people taking this drug to get pregnant and I think you are insane. Go adopt a kid there are plenty out there that need good homes. I did. F 32 2 months

2  pelvic pain w/no explination hot flashes, extreme irritability, crying spells, neck/back/hip pain, insomnia, night sweats, decreased sex drive, headaches, depression... over all feeling blah all the time. after years of chronic pelvic pain w/no explanation i was given the option to try lupron. i decided it was worth it to try but it did nothing to help my pain. i had severe bleeding for 6 weeks after the first injection. the hot flashes started up with the first few days and come at a rate of about 1-2 per hour. my body aches all the time, my head hurts, and i have NO energy to do anything. after 2 injections i, along with my dr. decided it would be best to stop treatment. some people swear by this drug and for others it's the devil. be sure you are prepared for all the side effects and know that this may not help your condition.  1  Suspected Endometriosis I was given a 3 month Lupron Depot injection on 12/28/04. The first 5 days the only side effects I had was soreness at the injection site, mild headache, and some difficulty falling asleep. From day 6 on, I have had night sweats, hair is falling out, blurred vision, extreme thirst (I drink 12 glasses of water a day), very painful backache, and a severe headache that never leaves me. That is not the worst part, I am only able to sleep 2-4 hours a night. From day 6 - 26, I slept only 2 hours a night. Now I am taking Fioricet (prescription pain reliever and sedative) several times a day for my severe headaches, so now I can sleep up to 4.5 hours. I almost drove my car off the road, because I could not keep my eyes open during my second week. When I called my doctor to tell him I couldn't sleep and the Ambien 10mg he called in for me doesn't help me sleep -- he said all his other patients have NO side effects and there was nothing he could do. I have since switched doctor's, but since I was given the 3 month shot it looks like I am going to suffer for 2 more months. I also had my period for 12 days. I would never recommend Lupron Depot to anyome. F 32 1 months

1  menorrhagia Extreme flu-like symptoms occurring once a month, including fever, burning/watery eyes, sneezing, stuffy nose, joint aches, bone pain, extreme fatigue, and sleepiness. I was given a three month shot of lupron in Jan. 2007 as a treatment for my heavy menstrual bleeding. I have already had three blood transfusions because I lose so much blood during my periods and this shot was a quick-fix solution until my endometrial ablation could be performed. While this drug has effectively stopped my periods, they are now replaced with three to four days of flu-like symptoms every month that make it almost impossible for me to function until the "flu" has passed. I have experienced these symptoms every month since the injection and at the exact same time each month that I would normally get my period. It always starts in the evening of the first day with uncontrollable sneezing, burning/watery eyes, and unable to breathe through my nose because of the congestion. By the next morning my body is so achy and in so much pain that I cannot get out of bed and I'm so tired that I sleep for at least 16 - 20 hours/day. I honestly feel like I'm dying. I us F 32

1  Endometriosis chronic fatigue syndrome, extremely severe joint pain (limbs and back), dizziness, gait disturbance, severe migraines, hypertension, cardiac arrythmia, visual problems, ovarian cyst No need for long comments: this drug nearly killed me. I'll be on medication for the rest of my life. I hope you'll think twice before taking this drug! Remember it doesn't cure endo or fibroids! F 32 3 months

1  Endometriosis, bleeding disorder I have long lasting side effects: memory, attention and concentration problems, asthenia, bad back pain and migraines, orthostatic hypotension as well as advanced osteoporosis and arthritus. This drug is not safe!! Just read the package insert. Lupron is hell. Just do a search before starting and you'll see how many people have severe and lasting side effects. Please don't take the risk!  1  endo and in a lot of pain hot flashes, hair loss, acne, water retention, weight gain, lower part of abdominal swelled up, depressed, angry, forgetfull, Ok, so in 1999 I was diagnosed with Endo. Up until then, I though I just had really bad periods. I had 2 laporascopy surgery, and with each surgery the endo was worse everytime, and now I have a lot of scar tissue and the endo is back. the pain never went away and it's so bad to the point where I cry. So, my doctor told me that if I wanna get rid of the pain is to take out my uterus and my left ovary, but that is not an option, we want more kids. Then she decided to put me on the lupron depot shot, every 3 months for 9 months. She told me about some of the side effects, (some), but said they would go away. So, first 3 months, it wasnt as bad, except for the hot flashes and the night sweats which they never went away. The good part was, no period and the pain is gone. Well, my last shot was in March 2009 and ended in June 2009 and as of right now, still no period. The worse part is that all the side effects are back, some are really bad and they are not going away. I started to loose my hair, not able to loose any weight and my belly swelled up (looks like I am pregnant), joint pain, very angry, very depressed, i cry a lot, night sweats, hot flashes, forgetfull sometimes. On top of that, i get so angry, to the point where I cannot control myself and i start crying. I havent had a period in more than a year now, and hope to get it soon and have more kids. Too bad my doctor didnt tell me all this and had to find out on my own. M 32 9 months

1  Endometriosis Meridian, MS I am a 32y/o black female. I had a hystorectomy in Jan 2009 because of bad cramps during my cycle. My doctor told me this was what I needed to do in order to get rid of the pain. He left my ovaries because of my age. During the surgery he saw no signs of endometriosis. After my recovery period (3 months) Every month around the time my cycle should have been coming on, I would begin having cramps as if I was having a period. Then I noticed blood in my stool. I thought maybe it was some after affects of the surgery. I told my doctor about my pains and blood. He prescribed Darvocet for the pain. And began trying to evaluate the problem. I've had 3 colonoscopies, CT scan with rectal contrast, regular CT scans and the only thing that was found was a knot underneath where my uterus would be near my colon (segmond area. (He noticed this during my surgery and called another doctor in for a second opinion, they both agreed that it was probably nothing due to know other signs of F 32 2 days

5  Endometriosis Anxiety, irritability, I actually got pregnant. I had a lap for severe Endo on 2/4/08. One tube was completely blocked and the doc said I had a 10% chance of getting pregnant the normal way. The plan was do do Lupron for 6 months then go see a fertility specialisat. I started my period on 2/15/08 and recieved my first of 6 shots on 2/29/08. I kept reading about this massive period about 8 days after the first shot. I never got that. I was worried so I took a pregnancy test and it was positive. It has been a very tough two weeks because i didnt know what the shot could do to a fetus. Anyways, I didnt really have any issues with the shot itself. I was on Premarin for hot flashes so I never got one. I was really irritable and had a lot of anxiety. If you are planning on getting this shot, just get it at the end of your cycle. Like when you are on your period. I got pregnant and got my shot within a few days of each other. If you are dealing with endo and just got a laparoscopy, give yourself a few cycles before you start t F 31 1 months

5  Endometriosis Hot flashes, fatigue, hair loss, and night sweats. Lupron worked very well for me. I used it to clear up my Endometriosis in order to better my chances of becoming pregnant. I was able to become pregnant a few months after treatment. I am now beginning the injections again to possibly have another child. F 31 3 months

4  Fybroids Hot flashes, night sweats and insommia I've taken the drugs for 2-3 months now and continue to experience hot flashes. They were humorous at first, but are becoming annoying. The good thing is that I took a step back to analyze when I have the hot flashes and they're normally when I'm stressed (positive or negative). With this in mind, I've been able to predict one coming and manage it. I simply fan. I haven't had a period, which is good. I'm taking the medication before a lyproscoptic maectomy surgery. I would recommend it and my doctor was very honest about the side effects that I may experience. She has provided me with sleeping pills, but i haven't taken them yet. The only concern i have now is that I've gained weight and think it's directly linked to the medicine. F 31

4  Endometriosis Mild headaches off and on. I figured I would add my own experiences since everything I read is so negative. I almost didn't go on Lupron because I had read horrible reactions people were having but decided to try it anyway. I'm on my 2nd Lupron injection and have to say (other than a few mild headaches)it has been a good experience overall. I had been put on birth control for several months before this and felt horrible. I think there are some people that just can't handle the pill and I'm one of them. So after going through all of that I was worried about Lupron but I actually feel better than I have felt in a long time. I'm no longer on the pill which made a HUGE difference. I'm back to exercising and really have had no complaints about this. I won't know about how well it worked on my Endo until my treatments are over but I'm very optimistic. Just remember to take calcium supplements while on Lupron. F 31 2 months

4  3,4 myoma hot flashes my gyno.gave it to me to minimize my 3,4 myoma.3,4 is not oversize but it had to get smaller because of its place.it is 3mm near to my uterine wall.doctor says it's dangerous to remove it by laporoscopy.also i don't want an open surgery.i used it for 3 months.( it's lucrin depot in Turkey).i had hot flashes but they weren't so bad if only it's winter.my myoma became 1,6.however i couldn't have laparoscopy because doctor saw another myoma which is near to my abdomen.he says it can burn by the heat.so i got this injection for nothing.i will have an abdominal surgery which i don't wish.by the way i heard about da vinci robotic surgery.tomorrow i'm going to see another doctor to ask about it.it's said to be less harmless than normal laporoscopy.  4  Endometriosis minor headaches occasionally. Hot flashes which come and go. I have had my cycle and was PAIN FREE!!!!! I have had severe pain since 2005 and was relieved to not have any pain. The side effects are definitely bearable if you have the type of pain that I did. I was unable to walk or stand and literally spent my cycle in the bed with pain meds that didnt work and a heating pad that did nothing. I hope that the pain does not return and I hope that the endo goes away so that I can work on getting pregnant. F 31 2 months

4  Stage IV Endometriosis Broke out in a rash the first couple of days after injection that continues to flare up a little. I experienced bleeding not even fourteen days after my first period/injection but that has subsided now. My bones are aching a little but not sure if the cold weather isn't to blame for that. No hot flashes or mood swings yet. F 31 18 days
