LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  endometriosis Severe hot flashes, night sweats, mental instability, depression, anxiety, mood swings, joint pain (mostly in my shoulders), migraines, I was better off with the pain from endo. Not being able to control my emotions, and them flying off to polar opposites, was more than enough to handle and destroyed many, many relationships I had. I'm now trying to get my life back together. It's not easy. F 20 6 months

1  Endometriosis Severe hot flashes, Weight gain, Trouble sleeping but always tired, headaches, Sick to my stomach all the time and so much more! I would not recommend this shot to anyone.. It was the hardest 4 months of my life. I gained over 15 pounds in 4 months and the pain never went away even after surgery. I don't know anything to help with endo but this is definately not it!  1  Endometriosis Insomnia, loss of appetite, depression, severe anxiety, mood swings, hot flashes, & loss of energy. I stopped taking Lupron in September of 2007. I was on for a total of 4 months. I still experience insomnia almost every single night. Even the strongest sleeping pills will not put me to sleep. I have been told there still may be traces of Lupron causing these problems. Before Lupron I never experienced anxiety, and never had trouble sleeping. I am currently taking Yaz to treat my endo, but it is causing severe weight gain and stretch marks. If anyone knows a better treatment please email me! [email protected] F 20 4 months

1  Endometriosis Hot flashes, Mood Swings, Weight fluctuation, anxiety, night sweats, insomnia, confusion, anger, urinary retention, dry mouth, acne, oily skin, rapid aged skin, bone density loss, low immune system. It would take me a million words to explain everything that happened to me on Lupron Depot! But.. Ill just stick with the worst. First of all I am 20 years old and going through menopause is NOT the right thing to do to treat the disease. I took lupron POST laproscopic surgery. I gained 20 lbs the first 2 weeks (and normally I only way around 100 at 5'4"). Then I lost 30 lbs 3 weeks later. The mood swings got so out of control I would have to lock myself in a room to keep from hurting someone. I was put on a natural hormone replacement as well as Valuum and Wellbutrin.. NOTHING HELPED! I couldnt sleep so I was put on sleeping pills(lunesta 2mg). I had NO energy, Battled acne for the FIRST TIME in my life and never stopped sweating.. BUT.. this is where the worst of it comes... I am the first case on record with lupron that the medication SHUT DOWN MY BLADDER. I am not talking just couldnt pee for awhile. MY BLADDER IS DEAD!! I have been self cathing every 4 hours for 3 months ( F 20 9 months

5  Severe, Severe Endometriosis Hot Flashes, Mood Swings, Very Bearable Soreness after Shots I just have to say this last part that got cut off: 3. I think people who have negative experiences find their way to proclaim them and share their stories of pain and despair, which makes sense, I understand that. And people who had great experiences dont really bother to tell about them (like myself, even though I told myself I would, it took me about 3 months to do so..lol). I know many women who have taken Lupron (especially those older than me, for fibroids & cancer) & they absolutely LOVE the drug. Whatever your case may be, I wish you all the best, & a long healthy life ;D . F 19 3 months

5  Severe, Severe Endometriosis Hot Flashes, Mood Swings, Very Bearable Soreness after Shots Im 19 & I have severe, severe, endometriosis that caused me to grow a foot long implant on my ovary. 1st doctor was a pain, got a 2nd opinion, & everything turned out for the best. They told me to take Lupron after my surgery (C-section type scar, not laproscopy). Before getting my shots I searched the web & I found mostly negative complaints about the drug, & I was freaked out. But I trusted my doctor (BUT I still asked questions) and here I am 3 shots later, & I FEEL GREAT! The hot flashes occur, but they dont bother me much, plus the periods I use to have were way worse. I DO, DO DO DO, get mood swings, & if you're someone who doesnt have the emotional stability or support from family & friends, I suggest add-backs (that way, you can experience the best results from the drug). So these are my conclusions, 1. NOT everyone has the same reaction to a drug so, 2. Try it out, if it doesn't work out, stop. Your doctor can't MAKE you do anything. 3. I think F 19 3 months

5  Endo I had hot flashes, cried a bit, and had trouble sleeping. The side effects were minimal, and this shot took the endo away for a good three years. I did the three month birth control after the shot, and I was fine for three years, so now I am doing the shot again. I got endo when I was 13, did surgery at 15, got it back immediately, then did the shot. Anyone who is young and afraid of the shot, I understand, but it is much better than the surgery! :-) F 19 6 months

5  Endometriosis hot flashes, weight loss, irritability, mood swings, minor depression, no period, NO PAIN I understand that this drug has been horrible for a lot of people, but I am tired of hearing all of the negative things about it. Lupron is a new drug. Not everything is known about it and it effects everyone DIFFERENTLY. I just don't want people who are looking into taking it to read all these negative things and decide not to take it when it could totally change their life. I really like it. I have been on it for a year for severe endometriosis and yes, I have had some of the irritating side effects, but I would much rather sacrifice for that right now so that I can have a chance of having kids in the future.  5  Endometriosis Hot flashes, mood swings, weight gain, exhaustion This is the first time I've ever taken the 6 month, once a month Lupron. After the first shot the pain caused by endo subsided, and after three shots my period stopped all together. It was great, no monthly visitor and I was truly pain free! Yes there are hot flashes, and I thought I was gonna fry brain cells I got so hot. I started acting as crazy as my mom. But I'm finally off the shots and I can already tell a difference. The pain is slowly coming back and I already want to start a second round. I know I can't yet, but that's how much of a difference these nearly painless shots are. I'd much rather be hot and a little exhausted than doubled over in pain and can hardly roll over in bed. Lupron depot is my savior from pain killers, which I'm thinking will have to tide me over till I can start the lupron again! And please e-mail me if you'd like to talk bc I would love to...  4  Endo Hot Flashes, Night sweats, Bone pain, Weakness, Headaches, Mood swings. Monday 8/22 was my last shot for my first full year of being on lupron. A year ago on the 22nd I was given two options hysterectomy or the last hormone treat which was lupron, I was worried after reading/researchig this drug last year I was not going to give this a try. I'm so glad I did! I hadn't had any peirods in the full year that I was taken the shots. I had no pain once I had my appendix removed(covered in endo) Granted its not all great, Side effects were plain crappy. But overall it was way worth it. I've been off lupron less than a week and today I started my period already, I go to doctor on monday to talk about my options. Today i'm right back where I was a year ago, Bent over in pain. Bleeding out. To say the least I will be going back on lupron as soon as the doctor allows it, side effects are worth it. F 19 1 years

4  Stage4 endo and ovarian cysts HOT FLASHES GALORE, fatigue and minimal joint pain I love Lupron more than i can say. I am 19 years old and found out my first semester of college that i had ruptured ovarian cysts. this soon lead to 2 surgeries, loss of an ovary and tube, and the discovery of my endometriosis which my doctor says she has never seen any as bad as mine. I look back and realize that i have always had super painful heavy periods. i didnt know that was not normal but since i have started Lupron (i am 4 months into 6th month program) i have been almost completely pain free. i have the ocassional spastic uterine, ovarian pain but it is definitely not severe. recently i have started to have some cramping and spotting, however inconvient it is not painful enough to even take an advil. i would recommend lupron to anyone who has been diagnosed with endometriosis, ovarian cysts, or women who have pain, irregular, or heavy periods. but have a bottle of water and napkin handy for the hotflashes and upper lips sweat (super attractive) and be sure to take cal F 19 4 months

4  Endometriosis Severe migraines usually associated with stress after 1st shot. Loss of period but I'm also taking pill form birth control continuously (no sugar pills). Moderate fatigue after 2nd shot. Acne on my back, chest, and arms after 5th shot. Mood swings (going from crying to absolute euphoria) after first shot. Joint pain on and off starting from the 3rd shot usually localized in knees and wrists. I have had no weight gain or loss but I am also very active (running and lifting weights everyday) and eat very healthy which is suppose to help. Before Lupron I could hardly excesise at all some days because of sever pain associated with endometriosis and when I was on my period I couldn't get out of bed most days. Now I have absolutely no pain. All my symptoms seem minuscule compared to the benifits. It may be frustrating at times but compared to how I use to be I'll be ok with dealing. F 19 1 years

2  Endometriosis Experienced at least 10 hot flashes a day, vaginal dryness, lack of sexual interest. Put on birth control w/o estrogen that did not help - put on one with little estrogen which stopped hot flashes and normalized sex drive, but period has unexpectedly returned lasting for NINE days and less than a week in between these past two periods-Dr. doubled my b.c. dose to stop bleeding, but did not help and made me feel even worse than the shot made me feel. VERY emotional with outbursts of tears, depression, fatigue, fogginess, forgetfulness, lack of motivation, pain in joints Laproscopy to remove enormous ovarian endometrioma cyst led my Dr. to put me on shot. I am pursuing a degree in a VERY rigorous major. it has severly affected my performance in class-I have missed many classes in courses that do not allow for many absences. I also have such a short memory and/or level of concentration that I have to work extremely hard to finish the simplest assignments. I have two shots left but do not intend to complete the round because it has NOT helped with my pain-it is still as intense as it was prior to diagnosis and treatment. Wish I had seen these comments before deciding to do the shot. Hope that everything will return to normal once taken off shot. F 19 4 months

1  Endometriosis Hot flashes, insomnia, severe mood swings, hair loss, weight gain, loss of bone density I thought that the Lupron was one of the worst drugs I've ever taken for my endometriosis. I was diagnosed when I was 15 and started Lupron shortly there after. I am now 19 and since taking Lupron have been on Depot Provera,Lo/ovral, and now Ovcon 35 because the Lupron didn't help the pain. Within 2 months of finishing the treatment I was put on Depot Provera, and I don't have health insurance so that was a lot of money for something that only made me a crazy bitch for six months. My symptoms didn't even get better. Depot provera helped me more than Lupron. And the side effects were unbearable, not to mention they were on top of puberty, but my parents would hardly talk to me and I really didn't have very many friends at school. I would never recommend this druge to anyone. In fact my doctor tried to put me on it again to see if the second time around would work better and I refused. F 19 6 months

5  endometriosis mood swings, minimal hot flashes, weight loss, trouble with memory, breast tenderness (first two weeks only) I have been really lucky and have not had a lot of the side effects that most women get. Probably the worst side effect for me are the mood swings. One second I am fine and happy, and the next I am so mad and agitated! My doctor put me on add-back therapy, which I think has helped a lot. I have only had a few hot flashes, and they haven't even been that intense. I was terrified that I was going to gain a lot of weight, but since starting on the Lupron I have actually lost weight. I never had constant pain from the endo, so I don't know what it's like for other women who have, but I had two episodes of excruciating pain, and I am just glad to know that I won't be having that pain again. I am going in for my 3rd shot in about a week. F 18 2 months

5  Endometriosis Severe hot flashes, mood swings, no decrease in sex drive but very dry. I'm now 22 and getting ready to have surgery and do another round of this. Honestly it was the best 6 months of my life to have such a relief from pain. F 18 6 months

5  severe endometriosis I've only had about 4 or 5 hot flashes in the 6 months I have been on Lupron, irritability, weight gain (about 2 or 3 pounds), but other than that, Lupron is great! I just had my 6th shot yesterday, and I cannot say enough good things about Lupron. My doctor is even prescribing another 6 month treatment because it has worked so well for me. I feel so bad for those women who have posted on here who have not had a good experience with it. I think it really depends upon each person and on how well their body adapts to it. I have been very blessed- I have had no pain, no period, and I honestly feel great. I think a lot of satisfaction with this medicine can also be based on what your doctor tells you. Lupron DOES NOT cure the endo, it just helps it to stop growing. Like I said before, I absolutely love this medicine, and honestly, the minor side effects are worth it to be able to have a chance of having chidlren in the future. F 18 6 months
