LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  large uterine fibroid-pidaua weight gain- 30lbs and 4 sizes worth. Extreme hot flashes, body aches, anxiety, sadness, conjunctivitis, flu like symptoms, feeling like I'm in a fog, swollen face and irritability. No sexual problems after the fact. N/A while taking Lupron as my husband was in Iraq. I can't say I wouldn't recommend Lupron as each person responds differently. In my case it did not shrink my fibroid and it has already grown into my uterine tissue and therefore was not removed as we still want to conceive. I stopped taking it in June 07 and only now are the effects starting to wane. It took 6wks to have a period, which was severe. I then had a period 45 days later and bled for 2 weeks. I have never bled that long in my life. My cycle is normal now and I have lost almost all of the weight but I still hurt. I have feelings of slight depression, again, something I am not used too. I get dizzy, sick to my stomach and feel out of sorts at times. Every day gets better and that is what I hold on to. I wouldn't take it again. F 37 3 months

2  IVF Down-regulating phase/stage. This is my 2nd cycle, so therefore, my 2nd injection of Prostap. 1st time around, just a bit moody. 2nd time around, fine for about a week, then severe migraine-style headaches, bit sad/miserable, which comes and goes. Can't seem to find any info on what pain relief is best to take. I've taking mefanamic acid and/or codeine, but seen conflicting info on the web about taking codeine. Any pain relief I've taken as not lasted very long. It's a good thing I'm on holiday from work this week, but what a way to spend my holiday. I thought I'd be gardening and seeing friends and family. Instead, I'm sat here in my bedroom typing, trying to lift my head up as it seems to weigh a ton! I suffered from migraines as a teenager and I can safely say this is very similar in strength of pain to my whole head. This drug is also used to stop periods whilst down-regulating on IVF before egg stimulation can proceed. Just strange how the first time around, I had no real side effects, or so I thought, but I have since learnt that it can cause cysts on the ovary and that is what I had the first time around on my 1st IVF cycle. AND I was in absolute agony with the large cyst as it was hard for me to walk. Additionally, my egg collection was stupidly painful and this was down to my cyst. The cyst was removed at the time of egg collection, but as with lesions, the pain remained with me for several days afterwards. This meant that my embryo transfer day was meant to be non-painful, but the evening of my embryo transfer I thought I was dying, maybe this is why my body rejected the embryos. The pain is traced back to the cyst, the cyst is traced back to the Lupron Depot/Prostap injection in my opinion. F 37 14 days

1  endometriosis Started Lupron after a Laproscopy surgery for a total of 3 months, had typical side effects of hot flashes and loosing a lot of hair, but 1 month after my last shot my body went into extreme pain with muscles in arms and legs. Felt like I was giving birth out of my toes and arms, sleeping only a couple of hours a night, became very depressed due to the pain with a handful of doctors with no answers. This was in 2001, it is now 2008 and I have been through a long list of medication, therapy and now am entering an elimination diet to help with the pain. I have quit my job this week as the pain is so debilitating it consumes your thoughts and emotions. The only common element is the timing of this drug and the pain that started. Fibromyalgia is the only diagnosis any doctor has ever come up with. I was so healthy and happy before taking Lupron, running 10K's, hiking and full of energy. Today I am laying bed writing this, tried to find some relief. PLEASE do your research, you may g DON"T TAKE IT.... F 37 90 days

1  endometrious This has been the worst "roller coaster ride" of my life. I have bled for the whole time on this injection (except for 2 weeks).I was not made fully aware of all the side effects from my doctor. I can handle the hot flashes/night sweats, butt the emotional issues that go along with this injection is absolutely the WORST!!!! High anxiety, constant crying, withdrawling from crowds. I am typically a bubbly & out going individiual. This drug as totally changed my personality. The hopelessness &suicial thoughts are the worst. It has greatly affected my family life. All I want to do is stay at home & crawl in my "shell". Lupron has caused a lack of a sex drive. I am scared. I want to feel like my self again. I have taken 3 injections thus far & I am not continuing with the 4th. Would I reccommend this treatment? ABSOLUTELY NOT! I want my life back. It needs to be off the market... F 37 90 days

1  ovarian cysts 20lb. weight gain, hot flashes, mood swings especially coming off the drug, depression, exhaustion. I want the six months I spent on this drug back. It's ridiculous, have surgery, your recovery time will be less stressful than being on this medication F 37 6 months

1  endometriosis Manic behavior, including extremely violent thoughts and volatile reactions to everyone and everthing. Hot flashes were bad, but they were nothing compared to the different (and evil) person I became on the drug. I have permanent memory loss attributed to Lupron. The drug did nothing to stem the growth of my endometriosis and made my life (and the life of those around me) and absolute living hell. F 37 6 months

1  Endo Fibromyalgia and chronic myofascial pain, headaches, fainting. Also multiple hormone disturbances and autoimmune thyroiditis. Why is this drug still on the market? It has destroyed my life and caused so much suffering for nothing! Big Pharma gets rich - this is the only "positive" effect of Lupron! Don't take this drug! I'm not dissatisfied but disgusted. My life will never be the same anymore. And I still had to undergo surgery. Lupron caused all these chronic problems really for nothing! Please look for a good endo surgeon and don't waste your time and your health with such a hazardous drug. F 37 5 months

1  Endometriosis Mood swing, fatigue, headache, panic attacks, eventually develop seizures and epilepsy. TERRIBLE DRUG and HORRIBLE side-effects. Took Lupron in 2008-2009 for 12 months. Since then, have had bad episodes of panic attacks and seizures. I am suffering from epilepsy now because LUPRON messed up my hormone so badly during the year I was treated. I WISH my OB never put me on it. It didn't even control the endometriosis as I still had to go through a 6 hours surgery to take care of the problem anyway. F 37 12 months

5  Fibroid/ Mood Swings/Heavy Flow Two days after the injection, I had horrible pain in my pelvic area, where my largest fibroid is located. After one week and my final period, I feel great, no hot flashes, no more mood swings began exercising 3-4x a week, since I am no longer in pain all the time. I was really afraid to take this drug, after reading so many negative things about it. But I feel like a new woman, and my children are very happy for me. I suffered from migranes, and PMS almost 14 days every month for over 6 years. I feel free! F 36 25 days

4  endo/shrink ovarian cysts First I would like to mention I would take any of the side effects I had any day over the pain I was having before on Lupron. Was on Lupron for 3 months. Bad Headaches, mild hot flashes, tiredness, some mood swings. After first shot did have some spotting for 3 weeks. It worked for shrinking my cysts and helped with all my endo pain!! and NO weight gain!! please remember everyone reacts differently to medication. F 36 3 months

4  Edno, bleeding after sex, cramps 6 weeks into treatment. weight loss, headaches, first 2 weeks very painful, felt like my uterus turned into rocks. First month period lasted 10 days. Mild hot flashes, trouble sleeping and anxiety. So far I am very happy and hope that it continues. Dr. has given me add back but I haven't started it yet. I am afraid it will hinder my results. Had endo surgery 6 months prior to starting injections. That surgery made everything worse. Last ditch effort to save my uterus. F 36 6 weeks

4  endo and awful cramps I am happy to say that my face has cleared up, not bloated, and I have lost weight. I will say too that my back does hurt, hot flashes, night sweats, and can't sleep. But that is ok - because I love not being bloated and feeling like I've lost 10 lbs. but that could be due to taking Zoloft. I was very short w/ my 6 yr old son at first so I started taking Zoloft and I feel good except for the back pain. I am scared when I get my next shot July 25th 2007 that awful things will start happening since I've read this site. I only take 2 shots in a 6 mn. period. 1st shot was April 25th. Can someone email me at [email protected] if you are scared of taking another shot. so far so good, just scared to get the next shot. F 36 2 months

4  shrink tumor from severe endometrio Hot flashes, severe mood swings, severe heat exhaustion, aggressiveness, short temper increase, rare nausea, anxiety, occasional paranoia/jealousy (definitely not normal or warranted) depression, joint pain/achiness, loss of energy. Weight gain (so far 12# and only had three shots in 3 months). Probably bone loss, increased osteoporosis, dry skin, no sex drive to speak of (insert crying here) Insomnia like crazy. Hypersensitivity in peripheral nerves (hands and feet) Unexplained itching on extremities as well. Is there enough room for more? I am putting this here because it cuts my other stuff off in the next column.I thought after the first month I would be just fine considering all I had was the hot flashes (mean as they were). However just after the second shot I slowly started having all of the other I thought after the first month I would be just fine considering all I had was the hot flashes (mean as they were).  3  Shrink ovarian tumor I will put them in backwards because the thing cuts me off! Yes, it has decreased the size in my tumor by almost a centimeter after 3 months, and I have had no bleeding or pain. But that is all I can say that is good about this drug. I swear my wife of 8 years is about ready to leave me. My paranoid thoughts would have her packing even though she is trying hard to understand my suddenly snap tempered self. We have been trying to have a baby and this is my last resort seeing as the other ovary was taken in my first surgery at 19 and this one is covered by an apparently huge tumor. I was told I may have to be on this another 3 months after my surgery this month and we have decided to NOT follow this advice. Apparently this drug does damage to your pituitary glands and the symptoms can follow for months/years after. If I do end up getting pregnant, the poor kid may end up with a one parent household if my mood swings keep up! Please keep me in your prayers because I think I have even driven away the almighty with my swearing! Help!  3  FIBROIDS For the first month i experienced zero side effects. Except that my fibroid appeared to double in size! Nothing else changed until i was due for my first period following the shot. That day i began to experience severe cramping-- Persistent ache accented by sharp cramps lasting up to a minute and occuring every five minutes. This lasted a full eight days. This was followed by a normal period. other symptoms were insomia, night sweats, and a signficant decrease in appetite followed of course by weight loss. i think the fibroid is now starting to shrink but i won't be sure for a while.
