LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  Endometriosis hot flashes, Night sweats, Loss of appetite, Major forgetfulness, Irritability, Occasional Insomnia, and Bad joint aches It has helped the pain (except for the first few weeks!). However, with the forgetfulness, night sweats and hot flashes I sometimes have to wonder if it is worth it. I have the understanding that after the treatment the endo could easily return and at that point I will just have a hysterectomy (which is what I originally wanted but was told to do this first) because I will not put my body through the forced changes of menopause just to control the pain.  3  endometriosis I'm having so many side effects; hot flashes, night sweats, moodiness, exhaustion, starting to get pimples and libido level LOW..im having a hot flash as I type this now I dont know how this is going to work. I guess these side effects are better than having really bad cramps but when I'm done and I start to get cramps again, I'm going to be mad... to put your body through these changes, at such a young age and so sudden, i hope it doesnt have any lasting effects. So far, the only feeling I have is I hope these side effects are worth it in the end. I would hate to feel like I went through this for nothing... I wish it was more positive feedback i was giving, but just being honest.... F 29 3 months

3  Endometriosis HORRIFIC hot flashes in the middle of the night accompanied by insomnia, terrible mood swings, crying all the time, nausea, weakness in my legs, small amount of weight gain, increased acne my pain level has decreased a small amount. Have been on the injection for a month now, two months to go and I don't know if I can handle all of the side effects. Before Lupron I had horrific pain from endometriosis and now I still have some pain but it is accompanied by hot flashes, weight gain, mood swings, dizziness, increased acne, and nausea. Is it worth it? If this helps my body heal so I can become pregnant, then yes, it's worth taking! F 29 1 days

3  Endometriosis hot flashes, insomnia, joint pain, and headaches I have been on Lupron for 6 weeks so far. I got the 3 month injection for stage IV endo. So far I have not had any pelvic pain. Around week 3-4 I started having hot flashes and a headache that wouldn't go away for 2 weeks. The side effects do stink on this med but anything is better than the severe pelvic pain I had even after surgery. Make sure to do a lot of research and see if it is right for you. Hopefully I will start add back therapy soon. These hot flashes are killing me! F 29 6 weeks

3  Severe Endo - Stage IV Extreme fatigue, nausea, no appetite, weight loss, joint soreness, insomnia, hot flashes, body aches, extreme moodiness, constant headache I have had 4 laparoscopies in the past 6 years including thermal ablation for lesions, adhesions and implants. My bladder, uterus and colon are all involved with the endo already closing one tube. I am feeling more and more side effects as each day goes on. I'm on the 3-month injection (2 in 6 months) Still have some pain but nothing to get upset about. Just waiting to see what's next. F 29 21 days

3  Endo & Cysts Weight Gain 30 LBS, HOT FLASHES, night sweats, confusion, lack of concentration, very moody, short temper. Just not myself. I had cysts removed via laproscopy and then Lupron Depot injections I have just finished my 3rd shot, I refuse to take it anymore, In the beginning the side effects were not as bad and it did shrink my uterus causing the pain to stop. But now the side effects are constant and I just can't deal with it anymore. THe weight gain is horrible, I have gained 30 lbs in just under a year. I have no patience and also very emotional I am fighting with my husband all the time. I get hot flashes all day long, I am waking up in the middle of the night soaking wet from sweat. I just can't deal with it anymore. I would rather suffer through the pain. My Gyn has put me on continous YAZ for now and I go back in 3 months to see how things go. F 29 9 months

3  Endo Major headaches, uncontrollable crying, bouts of rage and anger, short temper, loss of sex drive and all around grumpyness The few good things I can say about the shot is that I don't hurt. I had a lap almost a year ago and the pain came back a few months after so my doctor suggested the Lupron shot. I putoff taking it for 6 months and finally did. I am on week three. I am hoping that things will get better. I hate feeling like I am losing my mind and my poor husband doens't know what to do. F 29 3 weeks

3  Endo and Ovarian Cysts Hot Flashes (Mild) and Night Sweats (Severe) I am on my 7th month of Lupron therapy and have been very satisfied with the pain relief I have experienced since beginning the injections. Unfortuanatly I have just developed another Ovarian Cyst and am very confused about what this means for long term relief. Here's hoping this one goes away with out much grief. My long tern chronic pain landed me with a painkiller addiction...so I'm doing this one with out any pain meds...wish me luck F 29 7 months

2  Pelvic Pain, PCO, Menorrhagia I am on add-back therapy, so I don't experience hot flashes. Although, I am very irritable and borderline depressed at times. I also continue to spot with occasional heavy bleeding. The pelvic pain has decreased considerably because it EXPENSIVE !!! This drug is basically the last resort until a hysterectomy. F 29 4 months

2  endometriosis headaches, mood swings!!!!!, nausea/vomiting, still having cramping/pain, joint/bone pain, memory loss I was just diagnosed with endo on April, 27, 2005. I had most of the usual symptoms except for one strange one, my belly button would bleed in conjunction with my period. I am to take Lupron for 7 months total and don't know if I can make it. The only reason I am trying this is because I want to have another child. I have either been crying or been so aggitated that my poor husband is sometimes afraid to speak to me. I am prone to migraines anyways but I have consistently had a headache and and usually sick to my stomach. I hope this gets better. F 29 12 days

2  Endometriosis Hot flashes, moodiness, weight loss (to the extreme), lack of interest in sex, vaginal dryness and constant fatigue. I received 6month worth of Lupron shots in 2005, I had already had 2 laparoscopies that didn't help. I researched the Lupron and read all the positives and the negatives. I decided it was important to weigh the options, regretably...I chose the Lupron. While I was taking it, I did have mood swings and severe hot flashes but other than that, it alieviated the pain. I thought this really was a miracle drug and couldn't understand what all the fussing was about, sure there were side effect but at least I was out of bed. It took a while to really show it's ugly side effects. Since that summer of 2005, I have had another laperoscopy, bladder surgery for Intersitial Cystitis, I am awaiting a colonoscopy to determine if I have IBS, I have extreme arthritis like symptoms in my hips (especially when the weather takes a turn for the worse) and chronic pelvic pain. I am almost 30 years old and most 90 years old clients (I am a geriatric social worker) could run circles around me. I blame a lot of F 29 7 months

1  Endemetriosis In order of severity: Continual, persistent, non-ending severe headache, depression, severe mood swings, lots of hot flashes, hyperhydrosis, difficulty concentrating, dizziness, nausea, hair loss, exhaustion I have been dealing with these symptoms since 6 weeks after the last of 3 injections. That was almost 4 years ago! I have not taken Lupron in the past 4 years! There were some side effects while taking the shots, but the side effects I am talking about here started after the shots were done and continue to this day with no end in sight! These symptoms are not going away, in fact, the headaches have gradually become worse despite taking many different types of approaches to solve the headache problem. I would NOT recommend Lupron to anyone with Endemetriosis under any circumstances. It is not a cure, only a "quick bandaid", and it has the potential to alter your life in many negative ways. Why risk it? F 29 4 months

1  Endometriosis Hot Flashes, Night Sweats, Dizziness, Weight Gain, Water Retention, Pelvic Pain on right side, Cramping, Breakthrough bleeding after 2nd treatment, Mood Swings, Crying, Extreme Fatigue, Muscle Aches, Anxious Feeling, Dry Skin, Insomnia This treatment has beena nightmare! I feel worse now than before I started treatment. My only other option was a hystorectomy; so I thought I'd try this as a last ditch effort. Please think strongly before trying Lupron. I have severe bone loss, which I hope will improve after treatment. Good luck and stay healthy! F 29 4 months

5  ENDO. SEVERE night sweats, depression, headache, some weight loss, mood swings, decreased energy level, constant nausea/vomiting for 2 weeks after injections Even with all the side effects I've experienced I would do it all over again in a heartbeat! For the first time since I was 13 years old I have no pain. I couldn't imagine a life without pain before taking Lupron. F 28 6 months

5  Endometriosis insomnia, small weight gain, about 1 hot flash a day-if that. So glad I trusted my doctor about taking this! I suffered with absolutely horrible pain for almost a year. Had surgery, found endometriosis, then was put on the Lupron injections and also Aygestin to minimize the hotflashes, etc. I have had 4 injections, I have been pain free since after the first 2 weeks of the 1st shot! I will take the tossing and turning at night and a little weight gain to be pain free! It's just wonderful! F 28 6 months

5  Endometriosis, pain Headaches, fatigue, hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain I just finished my 6 month treatment (1 shot/mo) of Lupron with the last shot being one month ago. I read a LOT of horror stories online prior to taking the drug, but decided that personally, I needed to try it because the benefits could have out weighed the side effects. For me, that was a smart decision. I was in such severe pain. I was on continuous birth control, I had surgery, I took narcotic pain meds, I had cystoscopies and was on the IC diet for months. To say the least, I had investigated other options. I will not down-play the side effects. They are not pleasant. But compared to what I was living with, they are a walk in the park. If you are having mild discomfort and pain from endo, or other issues, think twice before taking this drug. The side effects will probably seem horrific if that is the case. But for me, I will take all those side effects and an extra 30 lbs over the pain and disruption endo was causing in my life. It may be short lived now that the shots are over, but I would do it again if needed and if it will mean keeping all of my organs necessary to conceive. My doctor was thorough in explaining my choices, and I made an informed one. I suggest you do the same for your own situation. F 28 6 months

5  Endometriosis I had occasional headaches and nausea throughout the treatment. The most noticeable side effects of escallated cramping and sharp pain came at about week 4-5 of treatment. The pain peaked just as described and then it was amazing how great I felt after that. The pain was nearly completely gone. I feel like I have my life back. There certainly are side effects to this treatment, just as there are to many others. Every one is different and remember that there are many success stories out there, but often you see more of the "bad reviews"...Just as when you receive great customer service somewhere you might tell one person, but if you have bad service you will tell ten people.
