| 1 | UTI | Upset stomach, feeling like throwing up, headaches, feeling like having the flu, hives, hands and legs red and swollen, chest pains | I had a reaction to Sulfa when I was young so I was put on Macrobid for a UTI. Started with a upset stomach, and feeling very sick like I was having the flu. I figured it was just normal side effects of my medicine. I took my second dose and within 30 minutes I was covered in hives that burned, and my legs and hands were swollen and red like a sunburn. A few minutes later my chest was hurting and I was told to go to ER. I've never had a reaction this bad. So hopefully I don't die in my sleep tonight. I literally have never had an allergic reaction to anything but bleach and bees my whole life. This is unreal. Please take this garbage off the market. Ain't nobody got time to go through all of this just to get rid of a uti. | This drug is horrible. DON'T TAKE IT!!! I've off it for 2 weeks and my stomach is still a mess (taking lots of probiotics) with cramping, feelings of pressure, burning, bloating, my ribs are still sore -- the muscles on my rib cage feel sore and swollen. NEVER had a problem with an antibiotic before this. Back still twinges. Having difficulty sitting or sleeping due to the discomfort. When will I ever feel good again? I do feel like crap but still not nearly the pain I was in with the UTI. I'm taking my last pill tonight and will be finished. I was on them for 5 days... I have been taking large doses of probiotics from a really good herbal company so maybe that's why my side effects were managable! I will continue taking these probiotics for atleast 3 months.. Then over the next 2 days nausea and shaking chills so bad that I could not get warm. 2 down blankets and the heat at 70. Fever hovered around 100-101. No appetite. On day 4, I developed hives on my chest shoulders, face and scalp- I felt much sicker than I did from the simple UTI. Called my doctor and stopped the drug. The next day I developed angioedema- face, hands,feet. Immediately I took about 50mg of liquid Benadryl (which I keep on hand) because I was afraid my tongue and throat might become involved and I was headed for full anaphylaxis. It took 5 days for the facial edema to simmer down but it still flares. It's now 8 days after stopping the drug and I seem to have "serum sickness". Swollen joints, red burning patches of skin over my joints, face and ears, extreme fatigue, edema, and decreased urine output (kidney involvement). I see an immune specialist next week. | This is not for everyone. When I stopped taking it my doctor said "3 days is usually more than enough". Then why prescribe 7 days? Unfortunately I am allergic to sulfa so they gave me this. Never again! I think a drug named nitrofurantoin should cause concern to begin with.
