Two weeks after I went cold turkey, I had lost 5 lbs. Also do not go off it cold turkey or you will have an acid reflux problem that is intense. Wean yourself and wean your acid (coffee etc). Then find a nother medicine. I am taking up bike riding and hot baths. And often due to financial reasons, I would prescribe 2 pills daily as opposed to the single in order to achieve the "Prescribed Rx. dose". When my own gerd/reflux got out of control, I took this medication myself. Did wonders for my symptoms which completely resolved. But the previously mentioned side effects I described caused me to go searching for answers. I change the way I eat and now I'm taking natural remedies and little by little I started to feel better. | If your doctor prescribed you this medication you should take it helps at first and each body is different but if you get this bad side effects talk to your doctor about it could be the medication or you have something else. But personally I don't recommend this medication I thought I was going crazy will all chest pain and weird feelings. | M | 26 | 5 months 20mg 1X day | 8/16/2020 | 1 | Gastroenteritis | I really regret taking prilosec, i fell ill with a virus last december that caused gastroenteritis (severe acid reflux and diarrhea).. i was told to take omeprazole for 14 day treatment.. at the time i did not experience any side effects so after the 14 day treatment was over, about a week later i experienced acid rebound that sent me to the ER. The er dr said i needed to up the dose to 40 mg 2x/day... and this is when i became more ill.. i had severe diarrhea for 9 days, blurry vision, brain fog, muscle twitching, cramping, body jolts before going to sleep, . i couldnt digest my food.. but i did not know what was happening to me.. i was so sick i had to have a colonoscopy and egd.. i was told i had unspecified colitis.. i stupidly cont this drug bc thats what the drs told me to do.. and as im trying to heal my gut from whatever virus i had i started to develop new symptoms.. extreme brain fog, memory loss, fatigue, anxiety, muscle twitching, buzzing in certain parts of my body.. frequent urination in am. I feel as if i have nerve damage of some kind because of this ppi.. after 4 1/2 months of this posion i have since stopped this med and it has been 11 days but my twitching is still there.. i know this drug caused these other problems bc as i weaned from 40 mg to 20mg to then every other day i began experiencing body jolts and more nerve problems, numbness in certain parts, etc. has this happened to anyone else and did anyone make a full recovery?? This should not be used long term. Find out the underlying cause of your issues! If you must take it long term make sure you're in the care of a good doc that will test your vitamin levels regularly.. B12, iron, magnesium, D etc. This drug will likely cause more harm than good even if it isn't immediately. I've been taking it six months, and my doctor said I should be able to take it for the rest of my life. However, the side effect of decreased bowel control outweighs the benefits (as great as they are), so I have discontinued its use. After one week, the side effects are clearing up, but the acid reflux pain is back with a vengeance. If Prilosec OTC came in a 1/2 strength, that would probably control my acid reflux with less problem "down below", but I don't think it does, and you're advised not to cut the pills in half. I asked my dr to presribe this as we all know "one size doesn't fit all." I have been on 10mg for just 2 days and my Gerd has not been back. Maybe others should ask their dr to go on a lower dose? I drink tons of water, don't smoke or drink alcohol. I have been researching natural methods. Read a tsp spoon of honey may help, before meals and a tablet called DGL it is derived form licorice. Didn't like reading that it may cause depression since I have felt a little depreesed lately, never thought of the Prilosec. My insurance does cover it if the Dr. writes a script for it, but wow reading all these side effects sure has scared me, but my attacks were so bad made him give me an E.K.G and a stress test, which were fine. Even had an edoscope to see if there was anything else going on, but no. Love to garden how am I not going to bend over? I have been on it for maybe six months or more and have just started to have these symptoms. I have been to the ER four times in the last six days with the same symptoms and all the usual tests have come back normal. DR. decided that my GI tract may have suddenly become hyper-sensitive. So they wanted me to take NOR-tryptaline. Another med. with lots of bad side effects. I doubt my stomach has suddenly become sensitive. NO THANKS DOC. I'LL KEEP WORKING ON IT MYSELF. ACTIVATED CHARCOAL IS HELPING. However, I began to experience significant joint pain (elbow/wrist) and later in the knees and lower back to a lesser extent. Finally realized it might be due to the Prilosec. I saw a neurologist who did many scans, blood tests, and nerve tests trying to figure out the source of my numbness and tingling, but everything has come back normal. He can't find the source, but said it doesn't seem to be a serious health problem, so that's good. About a month ago I was put on a different PPI (Protonix) and my numbness is still present, but it is getting a little better. I guess I'll never know if Prilosec had anything to do with it, but it is interesting that so many people here have experienced similar issues. I developed these issues after taking it, so I will always wonder. This was not a fun chapter in my life but things seem to be improving. If you are experiencing weird symptoms, you should see a doctor and not just assume Prilosec is your problem (althought it might be!). | M | 35 | 6 months 40 1X day | 8/12/2020 | 3 | Acid Reflux | I had acid reflux really bad when I was 22 and tried this. It worked. It took a very long time to actually work though. It took about 6 months to make me feel 100% better. I'm now 30 and haven't taken it in a long time, but now have severe acid reflux (keep in mind I did not take this for the last 7 years so it's mainly from poor eating habits). I have taken it for a month so far with no improvements. I am hoping it will kick in eventually. This isn't the type of drug to work right away, you really need to think long term with it, and also change your eating habits in order to feel better. It my experiences it got worse for a while before it got better. For a whole month mine felt worse, but now I feel like it's starting to let up. If it doesn't work even a little bit after 2 months I suggest taking something else. Some meds make it worse to the point it's unbearable and losec shouldn't do that.
