1  Gerd Where do I start!! Calf and thigh cramp/ pulled muscle sensations, off balance sensations, dizziness, ear fullness, anxiety, extreme tiredness like I was drunk and uncoordinated, headaches and nausea. I was previously taking famotidine 20mg twice daily and then my doc told me to try omeprazole. Worst decision of my life. As soon as this drug entered my system I felt so so unwell. Stopped talking it after three days as I just couldn’t deal with the effects and then exactly two weeks after stopping omeprazole and going completely cold turkey on everything I was hit with the constant off balance/ dizziness for 6 weeks straight, it took three months for the fatigue to lift which at times was really scary as I felt almost drunk at the same time everyday and now after 5 months my legs are significantly better although i do still have some muscle pulling sensations in my thighs and buttocks area if I stand for too long. Hoping that goes away completely soon. Headaches were bad at the beginning but have slowly improved. By far the worst experience I’ve ever had with a drug. The docs didn’t know what to make of it all and of course aren’t going to admit it was omeprazole that caused it. It does improve over time the longer it is out your system. F 30 3 days

1  Gerd Dread, panic, racing heart, shortness of breath, pins and needles, chest pain This drug caused me a year of distress. I was seeing specialists for all individual symptoms. Cardiologist, pulmonologist, neurologist, primary care, ER, therapist. Between the chest pain, racing heart, shortness if breath, pins and needles, high BP, numbness in arm, fear, panic. All of my loved ones thought I was losing my mind. I slept at family's house bc I was afraid to be alone for MONTHS! This drug made my life a living hell until I googled and found these reviews. I stopped as soon as I read these and most symptoms disappeared over time. Still dealing with some of it after a year! The withdrawal was terrible. Jolting out of sleep, internal tremors. I'm so thankful for this website. It makes me feel so much less crazy. F 31 9 months

1  Oesophagitis Hi. I was taking this med and started noticing tinnitus and low and anxious feelings. Eventually connected it after some advice and research. I stopped taking it 19th of June 7 weeks ago. First 2 weeks nausea no appetite kidney infection anxiety. I can eat again now but the anxiety is lingering. Also feelings of depression. Anyone know how long it takes for these side affects to lift? This medication did not suit me at all. Would never take again. F 47 4 months

1  Silent Reflux/LPR About 20 minutes after the 1st (and ONLY) dose I started to feel strange. Then I got a very toxic taste in my mouth. I started getting pains in my gut area (solar plexus). I went to bed but kept waking up suddenly with shortness of breath every few minutes. In the morning I got up to go to the bathroom. Things started to go black and I almost passed out. I had terrible dizziness for most of the morning. I thought I was dying. I started drinking lots of water to flush myself out. It is early evening now and I still feel awful. I still have that awful taste in my mouth. My gut feels like it is doing somersaults. This stuff is TOXIC!! I will NEVER take it again. BEWARE!! This drug is dangerous! F 69 1 days

2  Treatment of esophageal erosion Dizziness, fatigue, depression, anxiety, feelings of dread, brain fog, tinnitus, blurred vision, malaise, reduced athletic performance Omeprazole did not agree with me. At first, I did not believe the side effects were related to taking it, but after researching the post-marketing reports, I am convinced they are connected. I stopped using it about 5 days ago, but the side-effects have not subsided completely. Although it seems like most people have minor side effects from Omeprazole, some people seem to respond to it poorly. Unfortunately, I was one of those people. M 44 60 days

1  Silent Reflux Constipation, bad anxiety, heart palpitations, tightness in throat and chest, shaky hands I went to the ENT due to dealing with a cough, crackling in my throat when I breathed when laying down and laryngitis so bad that I could barely speak. This had been going on for 3 weeks and was getting worse despite one trip to urgent care and 2 trips to the ER. My visit to urgent care was a waste of time and money because they told me to just take an OTC allergy medicine. That did nothing to help. My first trip to the ER, the Dr prescribed a steroid to help with the swelling in my larynx causing the laryngitis. I took that for 10 days and that didn't help either. My 2nd trip to the ER resulted in me having a CT scan of my throat and blood work. Both tests showed nothing of concern. So, the Dr said I needed to go to an ENT doctor. I went to see an ENT and they looked at my larynx with a scope which they said showed that I had silent reflux as well as a sinus infection and white patches on each vocal cord. They prescribed an antibiotic for the sinus infection and Famotidine and Omeprazole for the reflux. The Omeprazole was to be taken in the morning 30 minutes before breakfast and the Famotidine was to be taken at night before bed. After only a few days on these medications, my voice gradually started to return and my cough was almost completely gone. I was so relieved to be able to speak again. During the 2nd week on the medication, I started experiencing anxiety symptoms. My throat and chest would feel very tight and I felt like I was having trouble breathing. I also starte F 40 2 weeks

1  Rule out gastric/duodenal ulcer I knew this drug could cause acid regurgitation because I was put on it years ago for what my doctor thought might be non-acid reflux. It literally damaged my vocal cords from constant acid rising into my throat, and I was a singer...not anymore. I have been taking it again for 1 week, against my better judgment, to rule out an ulcer, and my doctor assured me it was safe to take it when I brought up concerns. I am experiencing acid in my throat again, and pain along my ribs, and through my stomach, lower abdomen, chest, and shoulder. I'm coming back off it and I'm never taking it again. Word of caution to OTC users....the likelihood of it causing acid regurgitation is increased when you don't have acid reflux because it makes you too alkaline. So if you aren't sure you have reflux, try antacids first. If you do try omeprazole, watch out for hoarseness, gritty voice, acid taste in your throat, or a burning feeling in your throat. If it happens, I would stop taking it and contact a doctor before trying it again. The worst that could happen if you stop taking it is your heartburn comes back. F 35 7 days

1  Heartburn Heavy/aching legs. Severe joint pain in arms and legs. Facial flushing. Fatigue and Malaise . Stiff joints. Skin rashes.  2  Sensation of food stuck in throat I started taking these and my problems improved. I continued to take these until I had finished the packet then stopped taking them. Within a few days of taking these I was feeling very anxious, so much so that I got prescribed Propranolol as I was panicking about food being stuck in my throat and that my heart rate was up to 122 BPM whilst sitting down doing nothing. I did not realise at the time that this was a side effect of Omeprazole until now. After being off them for 2-3 weeks I had the worst stomach pain ever. It was a gnawing pain under my ribs, pains in my side absolutely everywhere. I thought that it was the original condition coming back so the next day got Omeprazole again, it took 2 days to get under control. Now I realise it was probably the after effects of coming off Omeprazole rather than the original condition. I still take these as I do not know how to come off them safely. If anyone can advise how to stop taking them please email me. Thank you F 42 2 months

OMEPRAZOLE  (OMEPRAZOLE):  Omeprazole is used to treat certain stomach and esophagus problems (such as acid reflux, ulcers). It works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach makes. It relieves symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough. This medication helps heal acid damage to the stomach and esophagus, helps prevent ulcers, and may help prevent cancer of the esophagus. Omeprazole belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). If you are self-treating with this medication, over-the-counter omeprazole products are used to treat frequent heartburn (occurring 2 or more days a week). Since it may take 1 to 4 days to have full effect, these products do not relieve heartburn right away. For over-the-counter products, carefully read the package instructions to make sure the product is right for you. Check the ingredients on the label even if you have used the product before. The manufacturer may have changed the ingredients. Also, products with similar brand names may contain different ingredients meant for different purposes. Taking the wrong product could harm you.   (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)
