OMEPRAZOLE  (OMEPRAZOLE):  Omeprazole is used to treat certain stomach and esophagus problems (such as acid reflux, ulcers). It works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach makes. It relieves symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough. This medication helps heal acid damage to the stomach and esophagus, helps prevent ulcers, and may help prevent cancer of the esophagus. Omeprazole belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). If you are self-treating with this medication, over-the-counter omeprazole products are used to treat frequent heartburn (occurring 2 or more days a week). Since it may take 1 to 4 days to have full effect, these products do not relieve heartburn right away. For over-the-counter products, carefully read the package instructions to make sure the product is right for you. Check the ingredients on the label even if you have used the product before. The manufacturer may have changed the ingredients. Also, products with similar brand names may contain different ingredients meant for different purposes. Taking the wrong product could harm you.   (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA) FDA Approval Date: 2009-01-21

1  Silent Reflux Constipation, bad anxiety, heart palpitations, tightness in throat and chest, shaky hands I went to the ENT due to dealing with a cough, crackling in my throat when I breathed when laying down and laryngitis so bad that I could barely speak. This had been going on for 3 weeks and was getting worse despite one trip to urgent care and 2 trips to the ER. My visit to urgent care was a waste of time and money because they told me to just take an OTC allergy medicine. That did nothing to help. My first trip to the ER, the Dr prescribed a steroid to help with the swelling in my larynx causing the laryngitis. I took that for 10 days and that didn't help either. My 2nd trip to the ER resulted in me having a CT scan of my throat and blood work. Both tests showed nothing of concern. So, the Dr said I needed to go to an ENT doctor. I went to see an ENT and they looked at my larynx with a scope which they said showed that I had silent reflux as well as a sinus infection and white patches on each vocal cord. They prescribed an antibiotic for the sinus infection and Famotidine and Omeprazole for the reflux. The Omeprazole was to be taken in the morning 30 minutes before breakfast and the Famotidine was to be taken at night before bed. After only a few days on these medications, my voice gradually started to return and my cough was almost completely gone. I was so relieved to be able to speak again. During the 2nd week on the medication, I started experiencing anxiety symptoms. My throat and chest would feel very tight and I felt like I was having trouble breathing. I also starte F 40 2 weeks

1  Rule out gastric/duodenal ulcer I knew this drug could cause acid regurgitation because I was put on it years ago for what my doctor thought might be non-acid reflux. It literally damaged my vocal cords from constant acid rising into my throat, and I was a singer...not anymore. I have been taking it again for 1 week, against my better judgment, to rule out an ulcer, and my doctor assured me it was safe to take it when I brought up concerns. I am experiencing acid in my throat again, and pain along my ribs, and through my stomach, lower abdomen, chest, and shoulder. I'm coming back off it and I'm never taking it again. Word of caution to OTC users....the likelihood of it causing acid regurgitation is increased when you don't have acid reflux because it makes you too alkaline. So if you aren't sure you have reflux, try antacids first. If you do try omeprazole, watch out for hoarseness, gritty voice, acid taste in your throat, or a burning feeling in your throat. If it happens, I would stop taking it and contact a doctor before trying it again. The worst that could happen if you stop taking it is your heartburn comes back. F 35 7 days

2  Sensation of food stuck in throat I started taking these and my problems improved. I continued to take these until I had finished the packet then stopped taking them. Within a few days of taking these I was feeling very anxious, so much so that I got prescribed Propranolol as I was panicking about food being stuck in my throat and that my heart rate was up to 122 BPM whilst sitting down doing nothing. I did not realise at the time that this was a side effect of Omeprazole until now. After being off them for 2-3 weeks I had the worst stomach pain ever. It was a gnawing pain under my ribs, pains in my side absolutely everywhere. I thought that it was the original condition coming back so the next day got Omeprazole again, it took 2 days to get under control. Now I realise it was probably the after effects of coming off Omeprazole rather than the original condition. I still take these as I do not know how to come off them safely. If anyone can advise how to stop taking them please email me. Thank you F 42 2 months

1  Intestinal pains - Stomach pains worse than what I was taking them for. - Anxiety worsened, affecting getting to sleep. Taken with Ciprafloxacin antibiotics for possible bacterial infection in stomach, didn't solve the problem and only caused worse pain elsewhere. Side effects started about 2 weeks in to the medication, side effects subsided about 2-3 days after stopping them. M 27 1 months

3  Gastric side effects of nssri Rib pain both sides. Lower sternal Pain, upper back pain between shoulder blades. Painful knees and ankles at rest. Decreased appetite, diarrhoea, constipation. Extreme health related anxiety. Sad and upset at side effects as it had helped the symptoms that omeprazole was first prescribed for. But the cons definitely outweighed the pros F 56 7 days

1  GERD This stuff is horrible. Sure, it got rid of the heartburn issues I was having, but the side effects are horrific and scary. Even more scary is they don't include the litany of scary side effects. While on this retched drug, I had pain in my thighs, slightly swollen lower legs, increased blood pressure, tingling in my hands and feet, lethargic legs, water retention, and a painful right testicle. Of course, none of these side effects, which can be found online on sites like the Mayo Clinic, are mentioned on the packaging. So, while taking this dangerous drug, I was having these issues and not realizing it was the drug because these side effects weren't mentioned. I thought I was having some other type of horrible medical condition(s). Luckily, I realized all these conditions cropped up after I started the drug. Once stopped, my conditions all began to improve and go away. Beware of this cursed drug. It can screw you up big time. Never again. Do no take this drug unless you're willing to suffer the consequences. M 37 7 days

5  Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) None. Cured my gerd, no more burning pain in the sternum area (which was most likely caused by taking ibuprofen for too long). I not only felt physically and psychologically good but I also had more regular bowel movements with less cramping. M 48 28 days
