When I was put on this med, I honestly thought I was losing my mind. I was having shortness of breath one night where I kept waking up every hour because it felt like I stopped breathing. I felt like my brain had stopped telling my body to breathe. Went to ER and they released me since they couldn’t find a serious cause of my shortness of breath. Found this website and saw people had the same side effects. My heartburn went away in just a few hours. By about the 13th day, I started to have bad bouts of anxiety for no reason while I was home. All I wanted to do was lay down and my mind was constantly racing. These feelings lasted for 4-5 days. It also felt like I was walking on air and I had aches and pains, particularly in my back and sides. I discovered through online research that many others have had this type of anxiety and symptoms after roughly 1-2 weeks on the pill. I stopped taking the omeprazole after 24 days. Two days later, my anxiety got better but I now had the worst tension headache that also felt like a migraine at times. This headache gradually tapered off to a 1-3 on the pain scale but lasted nearly a month. During that month, the anxiety came back and lasted about 3 days. Then it came back for another 6 days. I researched online that omeprazole can stay in your system for 3-5 days after stopping, but then you can suffer withdrawal symptoms, which can last as long as 3 months. It’s now 60 days since I last took omeprazole and I hope I’m in the clear however these withdrawal symptoms can come back in waves, though less intense. I’ve also gone to the doctor several times since taking the pill and everything is fine with me, hence the omeprazole was to blame. A pill that works is not worth it if the side effects are poison. I was told it might be gastritis or an ulcer. A month after starting Prilosec I had lost 15 pounds and had a scope done, only to find out that my stomach and esophagus are normal. Discovered on my own that dairy was causing my issues all along and the omeprazole was causing all my other issues. I have lost weeks of my life because of this drug. The side effects came on gradually so it was difficult to separate my original symptoms from side effects of the drug. I quit cold turkey 11 days ago because I need this poison out of my body. Stomach pain subsided within a couple of days. I have had crazy high anxiety, tremors, fatigue, weakness, muscle contractions, and nausea during withdrawal. I am a very active 51 year old with three children who's ages range from 6 to 13. March 5th 2019 I was experiencing difficulty belching so I reached into my medicine cabinet and took a very old prescription(6 years to be exact) of 20mg omeprazole...not a very smart thing to do! A few days later I had a muscle spasm in my stomach followed by tightening of my stomach muscles. I continued to take these pills not knowing that they might possibly be the cause of my stomach issues. The sensation of this tightness in my stomach made it difficult to breathe so I went to the ER where they ran a battery of tests which everything came back normal. The ER doctor diagnosed me with gastritis. I was prescribed 40 mg of omeprazole for 2 weeks and that's when all hell broke loose! I was experiencing constipation along with rumbling and churning in my stomach. I had no pain at all only that tightness in my abdomen. I felt it was time to see my GP to let her know about my situation and she give me another prescription of 40mg of omeprazole... per my request. She also gave me a referral to see a gastroenterologist. I had a colonoscopy and an endoscopy and everything was fine except for a little acid issue.. The gastroenterologist doctor told me to continue with an OTC Omeprazole for yet another two more weeks. I started Googling symptoms of gerd and gastritis and felt as though I did not suffer from either of those. Than after 4 days the tightness got progressively worse and gas with bloating went up exponentially . I also noticed my pulse was slowly increasing each day. One morning I woke up with my heart beating at 130 bpm. It stayed around 115 bpm all day. Before taking omeprazole my heart rate was always 65 to 75 bpm. I also experienced ringing in my ears which felt slight swelling. I stopped taking omeprazole after 7 days. So far after 5 days after stopping my ears and pulse are now back to normal. Im still experiencing some gas but much less than before. I still have the cramping and back soreness. Im praying it goes away soon | Avoid omeprazole if you can.
