Never occurred to me what the consequences of proton pump inhibitors were on the gut fluora, basically reduces acid strength in your stomach allowing for bad bacteria to live in your gut and in your mouth. I have had so many health problems since taking Omeprazole it is actually when all my problems began from diverticulitis to severe tooth decay. Do yourself a favor do not take this drug. Both my husband and I quit taking it and so many of our health issues have subsided. Wish I had known this drug was only meant to be taken two weeks at a time no more than three times a year. After a period of extreme stress last summer, I had my first crohn's flare in five years. I developed gastro pain that my doc throught could be gastritis or ulcer. She prescribed Omeprazole 40 mg. Initially, the drug quelled the burning pain. I developed other symptoms but didn't realize that they were related to the drug. Second month I tapered to 20 mg. Third month I tapered to 10 mg. I kept telling my doc that I felt the drug was worsening my Crohn's and worsening the gastritis. I developed nausea, fullness, which curbed my appetite, so I lost weight. I developed brain fog, jitteriness, depression, anxiety, fatigue, hair loss, constant burping and flatulence, stomach pain and a sense of tenderness in my liver. I had symptoms of gastritis in the beginning, but I developed so many more. Life became miserable and work was affected.Suddenly I realized that the drug might actually be causing all these things. A week ago I cold-turkeyed off and have experienced no acid reflux. Slowly, slowly all my other symptoms are receding. The first to go were the brain fog and jitteriness, depression almost gone, hair loss less, sleep better, burping 1/3 of what I was, and flatulence is pretty much gone. Less fatigued. Still waiting for slight nausea to go and appetite to return fully. Still have a feeling of tenderness in stomach and liver.
