I decided to use an off brand 14-day course of omeprazole after I noticed some burning on my left sternum area. I had been prescribed omeprazole in the past for acid reflux without any issues so I figured it was safe to use the OTC version for a short course. WAS I EVER WRONG!! This has been a nightmare since the first day. I am a pretty stable person and generally don’t experience depression or have anxiety but that was the first side effect I noticed. I was so depressed and couldn’t pull myself out of it or understand it. Then bouts of intermittent anxiety. My stomach felt full even though I hadn’t eaten and I lost my appetite and started losing weight. I then started with rib pain on both sides and under the top right rib cage. I have also had middle back and neck pain as well as right back pain that mimics a pulled muscle. The tinnitus was another issue and my right ear was blocked too. I developed a health anxiety that I’m still struggling with now with fear and panic that I have some serious disease. The gastrointestinal issues are continuing as well like I have IBS or something similar. I tried to figure out what was happening and realized all of this started with the omeprazole so I decided to look up patient reviews and found this forum which helped me to know others were describing the same symptoms. Anyway, please ASK your GP for alternative methods and medications for treating acid reflux and indigestion first before plunging straight to this very powerful medication that I think should only be prescribed as a very last resort. OMEPRAZOLE (OMEPRAZOLE): Omeprazole is used to treat certain stomach and esophagus problems (such as acid reflux, ulcers). It works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach makes. It relieves symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough. This medication helps heal acid damage to the stomach and esophagus, helps prevent ulcers, and may help prevent cancer of the esophagus. Omeprazole belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). If you are self-treating with this medication, over-the-counter omeprazole products are used to treat frequent heartburn (occurring 2 or more days a week). Since it may take 1 to 4 days to have full effect, these products do not relieve heartburn right away.
