SPIRONOLACTONE  (SPIRONOLACTONE):  Spironolactone is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. It is also used to treat swelling (edema) caused by certain conditions (such as heart failure, liver disease) by removing excess fluid and improving symptoms such as breathing problems. This medication is also used to treat low potassium levels and conditions in which the body is making too much of a natural chemical (aldosterone). Spironolactone is known as a "water pill" (potassium-sparing diuretic).   FDA Approval Date: 1999-07-29 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Adult hormonal acne Anxiety, depression, mood swings, dry mouth, constant bathroom use, irrational thoughts, very gassy This drug seemed to help with my acne, especially in regards to my oily skin. But, I started to feel really off at about week 4. First thing I noticed was the extreme dry mouth and need to go to the bathroom every 30min to an hour from having to drink so much water. Then, I started having really bad mood swings and that turned into depressive symptoms. I felt hopeless and lost. Really sucks because I do think it was helping my acne. F 26 1 months

5  Hidradenitis suppurativa CURED HS!! Dry Mouth & spotting a few days before period starts. Completely cleared my HS. I had mild/moderate cysts with occasional drainage, a small amount of pitting (2 areas), but no more than 3 cysts at a time. I also used to get an occasional cyst around genital area (usually ended up pitting there). I had extreme pain and swelling under my arms with itching prior to starting spiro. I started out at 50 mg a day for 3 months. The dose helped reduce pain, but did not clear my armpit cysts completely. I lost 10lbs. After taking the 50mg for 3 months, my dermatologist upped me to 100mg. The first month I still got one cyst on my armpits here and there, but since then I have been cyst-free for almost 2 months now! My weight has remained the same (150lb, I'm 5'5, athletic build), but since taking the 100mg dose my face is much less puffy!. It took about a month on the 100mg dose to completely clear my armpits. I still experience discomfort and some itchiness under my arms, but my skin doing great. I also used to get occasional cystic acne on my back, which has gone away completely since starting spiro. The side effects can be tough, especially the first few months, but now I barely experience anything (besides dry mouth). I feel like I have more energy and confidence since starting this medication. The side effects ARE a little strong, but it has reduced the extreme pain from my HS and increased my quality of life ten fold. F 20 6 months

1  Hair loss Anxiety, panic attacks, heaviness and tingling in hands/arms, slight chest pain My doctor prescribed 50 mg/day for 30 days, then increasing to 100 mg/day. Approximately around the time of the switch to 100 mg/day I began to feel general anxiety. The last few days have been progressively bad, with panic attacks, which I have not experienced before. I felt chest pains, my arms felt heavy and tingling, and I was worried I was having a heart attack. I've now stopped the pills and will get my blood tested. I started taking it for hair loss, and I haven't yet seen significant improvement although there may be fewer hairs falling out each day. F 44 2 months

1  Acne Bad diarrhea and sudden onset anxiety/panic with an elevated heart rate of 100bpm Called my PCP who recommended I seek out emergency services to check my blood potassium levels. I decided to ride it out since I took such a low dose and felt the panic subside within the hour. This morning I experienced another rush of panic while driving which tempted me to seek out urgent care but I ultimately refrained. 24 hours have passed and the general feeling of unwellness has lifted now that the effects have dissipated. I wanted to give this medication a fair shot and continue taking it but after the second wave of anxiety I don’t believe it is right for me. I was prescribed 50mg to start by an online tele-dermatology website called Apostrophe. I decided to only take half of a pill (25mg) as a precautionary measure. I strongly advise anyone to start out small and see how your body reacts. It’s a good idea to have your blood potassium levels checked by your primary doctor before starting this, especially those who acquire it through online services such as Apostrophe. F 25 1 days

2  PCOS (hirstutism, mood swings) Anxiety, panic attacks leading to ER visit. Have had moderate anxiety in the past, but never recurrent anxiety and/or panic attacks. Worst one, i felt like I couldn't breathe and was hyperventilating, arms and hands went numb and cramped so much my fingernails were digging into my palms, and my boyfriend ended up calling an ambulance. It lasted 3 hrs in the ER until they finally gave me Lorazepam. F 42 90 days

1  Hormonal acne I’ve been experiencing severe anxiety attacks and mood swings, and some occasional depression. My pharmacist said that this wasn’t caused by the drug, but there’s nothing else in my life that could have caused it. It did help to clear up my acne, but it’s not worth the constant anxiety in my opinion. F 22 90 days

1  acne extreme weight gain, 25 lbs in three months (I'm 5'2") it cleared my skin but despite never having a weight problem I blew up like a balloon all over. Doctor and pharmacist are saying it can't make you gain weight. But after seeing post after post from women who had significant and sudden weight gain after starting Spiro there has to be a connection. Be careful --not the super safe med it's made out to be.  3  Acne When I first started taking spironolactone I was given 50mg/day then went up to 100mg/day, then down to 75. Kept this dosage for a year or 2. Side effects were minimal, or not noticeable and the pros of clear skin far outweighed the bad. I generally had excess water weight and this helped that a lot. Was often thirsty and had dry skin but was so happy to finally have an acne free face, I wasn’t very concerned. 5 years later, now at only 25mg/day, I believe I have more anxiety and panic attacks than is normal. I’ve suffered from anxiety in the past but this is almost like I can’t slow down, and the mental fog is intense. For anyone considering taking this drug, if you have a healthy lifestyle (regular workout routine, minimal/no alcohol, healthy diet and outlook on life), I imagine this is a safe and wonderful drug to try. For all others, either get disciplined with a healthy routine or make sure to ween off of it eventually. Even at 25mg/day now I feel as though I could have undetectable kidney damage and anxiety/depression that isn’t worth the price of clear skin. Hoping my acne will stay minimal as I go off completely..but I advise everyone to really consider the trade off. F 35 5 days

3  Acne Completely rid me of acne up until recently when I started nursing school. This is when I started experiencing severe anxiety, panic attacks, and crying spells along with increased HR and heart palpitations. I didn't realize it was due to the Spiro until I ran out of my prescription and noticed my HR went back to normal in the 70s and I started feeling less anxiety. That's when I decided to look up the correlation between anxiety and spironolactone... Be careful with this medication! F 22 2 years

1  Hormonal Acne Hard to swallow/choking, sudden severe anxiety, depression and intrusive thoughts, fatigue and difficulty sleeping through the night, thirst/dry mouth. If I knew that this drug would give me crippling anxiety and depression I would have never considered it. Before I found out this was the cause I was a complete mess because I thought I was going crazy. I had an anxiety attack out of nowhere and spiralled in a matter of days. Its been less then a week and now I need to go to a therapist to deal with these side effects. Not to mention a few weeks earlier I was having alot of issues swallowing and almost choked which I think is the result of saliva loss. F 21 2 days

1  Hair Loss Anxiety, panic attacks, depression, fatigue, heart palpitations, trouble breathing I really urge anyone to carefully consider the side effects before taking this medication. I’m usually a stable, happy person. After about 3 weeks on this medication I started experiencing severe anxiety and panic attacks which lead me to the emergency room multiple times thinking I was having heart trouble. I thought it was stress that caused my anxiety and panic attacks but after reading similar reviews I realised it has to be the medication. I had never experienced anxiety or panic like this until now. BEWARE of this medication F 31 21 days

5  Cystic acne, oily skin Started at 50mg for 2-3 months, no side effects, acne clears faster, less oily, less acne, but still breaking out. Then up to 100mg for last 3 months, skin is looking great! After month 5 started having issues with nausea. Strange it didn’t start right away. I already suffer from GAD, don’t think it has gotten worse. I did recently start taking 5 htp with my anxiety that I’ve had for many years. I want to keep taking. Hopefully nausea will continue to get better. Feel like PMS has gotten worse. F 39 6 months

2  PCOD Severe anxiety, Gastritis, mood swings, severe depression I started experiencing severe anxiety a month ago and thought it was probably because I was stressed but recently I have observed that after leaving medication and starting excercising I got a little better but still after two or three days I still get anxiety while sleeping or randomly while sitting. Not sure when it would get better 25 6 months

1  Heart failure - PPCM Severe anxiety, severe depression, severe panic attacks, irregular periods, heavy periods, foggy head feeling, very tired all the time, mood swings, leg pain, chest heaviness, breast lumps, migraines, dizziness. I do NOT recommend this med. Yes it has been helping my heart failure but the side effects are deliberating! I cannot function. I've been in the hospital numerous of times because I thought I was dying when in reality it was severe anxiety and panic attacks. I cannot deal with this! Changing this med asap with consulting my cardiologist. F 30 1 years

1  Adult cystic acne Severe anxiety, panic attacks, irrational thoughts, dizziness, depression, heart palpitations, leg cramps/twitches, longer-lasting menstrual period, tender breasts. My cystic acne improved a lot on this medicine, but I felt like I couldn’t think clearly while taking it. I began feeling a little “blue,” which turned into debilitating anxiety that I had not previously experienced. I was having irrational thoughts and fears, which caused panic attacks. I went off the pill, and each day I began immediately feeling a little bit better. I would never recommend this pill— I would rather deal with the acne. F 21 6 weeks
