SPIRONOLACTONE  (SPIRONOLACTONE):  Spironolactone is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. It is also used to treat swelling (edema) caused by certain conditions (such as heart failure, liver disease) by removing excess fluid and improving symptoms such as breathing problems. This medication is also used to treat low potassium levels and conditions in which the body is making too much of a natural chemical (aldosterone). Spironolactone is known as a "water pill" (potassium-sparing diuretic).   FDA Approval Date: 1999-07-29 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  Acne Constantly reoccurring yeast and BV infections, depression, anxiety HORRIBLE. Sure, it cleared up my acne, but thats not all. This drug can cause something called hyperkalemia, and in doing so throw off your vaginal PH. This allows for infections to form such as yeast and BV, for three years I had them chronically and tried EVERYTHING to avoid them, never making the connection it was the Spironolactone because doctors said theres no listed side effects especially for yeast or BV. I eventually looked into it on my own and low and behold yes, it can cause infection. On top of that, I already suffered from depression and anxiety and had no idea to make the connection that this made it way more intense. Medicine will effect everyone differently, for me this was a horrible mistake. F 23 3 years

3  Hormonal acne Heightened anxiety, mild depression, random shakiness or restlessness I have just been overcoming severe anxiety and panic attacks. Then I started taking spiro to help clear my long battle of acne, but I noticed that it has been bringing back my anxiety and it's such an uneasy feeling. I can't decide if it's worth it to keep having clear skin but deal with severe anxiety again or vice versa. Just be careful if you have anxiety or panic disorder. F 24 1 months

1  Hormonal acne My dermatologist put me on this 7 days ago with a dose of 100mg which I think is a lot considering that I don't even have that big of a problem with acne ( I mostly get 2-3 breakouts, not more, but they've just been persistent and I wanted to get rid of them completely). After my 5th time taking Spironolactone I think I had a panic attack, even tho I'm not someone who gets stressed or anxious in general. It lasted for hours, very fast hearth beat, trouble breathing, nausea, fatigue, diarrhea. I've stopped medicine immediately and it's been two days and I still feel awful. I can't be in the car because I immediately start feeling dizzy and lightheaded. Also, my blood pressure was extremely high yesterday. Would not recommend this under any circumstances. F 25 5 days

4  Hormonal Acne No sex drive and seem to want to cry at anything slightly upsetting I had tried "everything" under the sun for my acne, when I started Spironolactone I had the runs and bad intestinal cramping, I would also get quite dizzy easily. These only lasted about a month. Since then my skin has be absolutely AMAZING! I am very lucky by the sounds of it, the only side effects I still have is a low sex drive (this could be because I am a mother of 2 young kids who works full time so I am tired and Sex is the last thing on my mind) and I seem to want to cry about anything slightly sad, or happy things, which is annoying but I’ll take it if my skin stays this nice.  2  high testosterone, acne, extra hair Debilitating anxiety, frequent urination, increased thirst, heart palpitations (at first), and occasional leg cramping. The idea of less male pattern hair growth and less acne sounded wonderful. My doctor failed to warn me about the horrible side effects though. I tend to be very outgoing and since increasing my dose from 50MG to 100MG in the morning and 50MG at night I have had the worst social anxiety. I throw up, shake, and have trouble breathing due to the panic attacks. I have seen very little if any improvement with my hirsutism after taking this pill for a year and a half. Acne has cleared up a bit but I am not sure if that is due to a topical cream I was prescribed for it. My testosterone levels have came down a little bit but not as much as I had hoped they would. Overall, the side effects do not outweigh the positives of this medication. F 18 1 years

3  Hidradenitis supperativa Extreme thirst and inability to sleep through the night due to having to pee so often. Low grade exhaustion. Skin thinning (more frequent cuts, bruises, scrapes, which heal slowly and scar where the skin breaks). Skin sensitivity. Quick to sunburn. While increasing dosage from 100 to 150 I thought I was going insane from anxiety and stress, so I scaled back and waited for a less stressful time in my life to increase the dose. My condition is bad enough that I've learned to live with the side effects because the alternative is worse. I wouldn't recommend this in a high dosage to anyone who isn't already experienced with being chronically ill, because the side effects can mimic or worsen chronic illness. Side effects may also worsen over time. Tip for users: Liquid IV or another electrolyte enhancer can help keep you hydrated without increasing urination, but it can get pricey if you drink a lot.  3  Hormonal acne I started with 25mg. It helped a little with my acne. Had to urinate every 20 minutes. Very thirsty, nausea, headache, mood swings, cramping of my arms n hands n tingling. Chest pain. Heart palpitations. Severe anxiety. Some depression. Panic attacks. After 3 months it got better but I still had quite some acne so I went up to 50 mg that was 2 months ago n the side effects doubled. I'm talking to my doctor I probably stop taking it. Sucks because my acne has improved so much but I can't take the chest pain n anxiety n mood swings ain't worth it :( F 28 1 years

1  Acne Depression, anxiety, extreme tiredness, inability to focus at work I started taking this to combat acne caused by a hormone imbalance related to multiple surgeries and treatments for endometriosis. The first ten days I could barely get out of bed I felt so generally sick. Then, I started having intense anxiety and depression with very dark thoughts. I also have been throwing up every time I work out. F 29 42 days

2  Hormonal Acne Was directed by my doctor to begin with 50mg and then ease into 100mg after a few weeks. While I was on 50mg I did not notice any major side effects. It was not until I started taking 100mg that I began having extreme panic attacks. I am prone to experiencing anxiety and panic attacks, but I usually only get them at night (and they can be rare). While on this drug I began having horrible panic attacks multiple times a day. My chest would feel heavy and I would have difficulty breathing. It got to the point where I almost went to urgent care because I feared it was something more then a panic attack. I also experienced increased stomach pains and indigestion. I have a pretty healthy lifestyle (vegetarian, exercise daily, no smoking/drinking, no major medical conditions) and sprio just didn't seem to work out for me. I believe it did help tame my hormonal acne but unfortunately I just can't handle the side effects. F 21 3 weeks

2  Pcos hair loss The pill slowed my hair loss but the other side effects I experienced were: extreme dry mouth (especially at night), period stopped completely, extreme anxiety, severe panic attacks, insomnia, and depression/foggy brain. Once I was weened off the pill, all of these symptoms went away!! Hair loss is worse now after stopping spironolactone. F 30 36 months

1  Acne I have only been taking spironolactone for a month, and during this time, I have developed intense panic attacks, signs of depersonalization, and extremely intrusive and disturbing thoughts. I've had to call out of work and spend all day crying in my bed, and have had to call my mother who lives across the country crying at midnight. If you have anxiety or panic disorder like I do, please reconsider going on this medication. I'm afraid I will never feel better and afraid I will have to live the rest of my life like this.  2  Acne When I increased my dose from 50mg to 100mg I would get horrible anxiety. I didn't make the connection at first because anxiety is not listed as a side effect. But then I went back down to 50mg when my acne had improved and when I returned to 100mg when my acne flared-up the anxiety hit me like a ton of bricks! I had started taking Lexapro to manage the anxiety, before I knew what was causing it, but not even the Lexapro could ease the anxiety when I switched back to 100mgs. This drug is not worth it!! Try everything else first. I think it should be a last resort. Derms seem to prescribe it like it's nothing, but I think they should be more cautious... F 32 2 years

1  Adult acne Constant anxiety. If you struggle with panic disorders, anxiety, depression; be careful with this drug. I normally have my anxiety under control but the last 4-5 days (I've only been on it for 2 weeks) were crippling. Cant eat, cant sleep... after seeing all the other comments of people with similar reactions, I am stopping it right away! I did not take it long enough to see any improvement in my acne.
