SPIRONOLACTONE  (SPIRONOLACTONE):  Spironolactone is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. It is also used to treat swelling (edema) caused by certain conditions (such as heart failure, liver disease) by removing excess fluid and improving symptoms such as breathing problems. This medication is also used to treat low potassium levels and conditions in which the body is making too much of a natural chemical (aldosterone). Spironolactone is known as a "water pill" (potassium-sparing diuretic).   FDA Approval Date: 1999-07-29 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Hormonal Acne Dehydration, light headed, dizzy, weight gain and cellulite gain in legs and stomach, depressive thoughts, anxiety, inability to focus This drug sucked and I do NOT recommend it. Jealous of those who lost weight because I gained 20 lbs of fat in 2.5 months (no change in diet or exercise) and cellulite on my legs which I've never had before. Worst part is it did nothing for my acne except maybe reduce the oiliness on my skin. I just stopped taking it and i'm terrified my body and hormones are messed up forever. Lmk if you have any advice, thanks. F 25 2 months

3  Heart failure I didn't realize Spironolactone was causing unwanted effects I had the dose reduced from 25mg to 12.5. I did know it reduced my blood pressure. My mood lifted and my appetite returned. The reduction is experimental because my blood pressure was too low and the symptoms were unbearable to me. The tippyness and light headedness is gone.  1  Hair loss Horrible anxiety when am due for my next pill. Not out of concern of taking it! The anxiety is foreign to me. I think my body must be sensitive to it. When it wears off, the anxiety licks in. Would never recommend it to even a dog. My hair loss continued. Didn't do a darn thing but make me a nervous wreck! F 70 0 days

1  Acne Panic attack and general moodiness This is probably the worst medication I ever been on. I have acne under my chin which I believed mostly due to masks. My dermatologist insisted I start spironolactone at 100mg/day since my acne didn't respond to 1 month of antibiotics use. It's easily one of the worst decisions I ever made. For the first time in my life I had a panic attack. I strongly believe it's correlated to this medication as I don't have a history of anxiety or panic attacks. I couldn't figure out why until I stumbled upon this forum. I experienced this at about 4 week mark. It's been a week since I'm off this, I still get anxiety and panicky feeling thinking about the panic attack. Please please be extremely careful, nothing is worth risking your mental health for.  2  Hair loss Mood changes: increased irritability, sadness, crying all the time for no reason - I didn't notice it as much when I was on 100 mg but once I went up to 150 mg I started feeling really sad all the time and crying about everything. After I stopped the medication, these symptoms went away within days and I felt mostly back to my normal self I was also extremely fatigued when I first started the medicine, but that also went away. When I first started taking it my blood pressure dropped so low I fainted, but it got better over time Breast enlargement Weight gain Trouble sleeping/staying asleep I started taking this medicine for hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) but didn't notice a huge difference/improvement in over a year of taking it. The emotional side effects combined with lack of effectiveness for my problem made me decide the benefits did not outweigh the risks of this medication for me. F 40 1 years

1  Acne Weight gain, severe fatigue, anxiety and depression, excessive thirst, sore breasts, breast enlargement. Weight shot up 25 lbs in two months without any changes to diet and fitness regimen. Weight will not drop despite increasing activity and adjusting calories and macros. Very anxious and depressed with panic attacks. It did clear up my acne but the rest of my body is ruined. Doctors repeatedly dismiss my claims that this caused such rapid weight gain. Taking this medication was my biggest mistake. Returning to normal feels hopeless. F 32 5 months

4  Acne Depression, dry and twitchy eyes, tired, flat mood, sore breasts I had mood issues before taking spiro, but I could regulate them decently. With spiro I just want to lie down and sleep. My back hurts from lying down and sitting so much. Very low energy. No desire to leave my apartment. Not worth having a clearer face. It does help with acne though. F 37 3 weeks

1  Hypertension Extreme anxiety. Nonstop headaches. Extrem moodiness. Irritability. Anger. Abdominal swelling. I do not think this medication beneficial at all for hypertension.  1  Acne I noticed a slight improvement in mood, decrease in appetite, and improvement in skin (intended use.) However, I shortly started to experience extremely troubling intrusive thoughts. I've been off the medication for 2 days and am still experiencing these thoughts. I have underlying mental health conditions and am consulting my therapist & psychiatrist in hopes of a remedy. This is extremely disappointing as it took years to get to a good place mentally, only to be compromised by a drug intended to help with my skin. I do not recommend under any circumstances, especially if there's someone with an underlying mental health condition. If you struggling with acne, seek alternative & natural treatment options.  2  Pcos NO SEX DRIVE, dry skin, frequent urination, highly emotional This helped with body acne at first but going on three years of taking this and all I'm left with are weird side effects. I cry all the time (happy or sad), I'm dried out no matter how much water I drink (scalp, lips, body, etc.), I have this layer of fat I cannot get rid of no matter how much I run/exercise and I think that's likely due to the increased estrogen, and I've COMPLETELY lost my sex drive. Not worth all of that just to rid of what was normal acne. F 27 3 years

1  Acne First, this didn't really help with my anxiety. I've been taking it about 3 months & still have awful hormonal acne. Second, let's talk about the psychological torture this drug puts you through. I have always had anxiety but, typically it is only triggered when I'm overly stressed or travel... I always have a good head on my shoulders to be able to push out overwhelming thoughts or to stop overthinking. Last week I had an awful anxiety attack & could not stop thinking about the cause of my anxiety. It was almost an obsessive thought or like excessive overthinking. I thought it was just me being anxious but, then I started doing research & realized that the spironolactone was the root cause of this. Spironolactone decreases androgen production in your body... androgens are needed to synthesize estrogen & regulate overall hormone levels... now it all makes sense. So not worth the psychological stress it puts you under. Definitely DO NOT recommend this. F 23 90 days

1  Acne Anger, anxiety, depression, dizziness Please please do the research before starting this drug. It did amazing things for my acne, but around week 4 I started noticing some anxiety, depression, and anger. I struggle with extreme anxiety and ocd thoughts but I have it pretty much under control with medication and therapy. When I first started noticing the changes in how I felt, I knew it had to be something newly started because I've been on my normal routine with meds and therapy for 2 years now. I felt so “off”. After doing the research, I now understand that I am not alone in the side effects that I experienced. It was a lot of crying, not eating, extreme anxiety, panic attacks, and getting angry easily or snapping at people for no reason. 2 days off the meds and still dealing with things but I'm hoping once I get this out of my system and cleanse I will be feeling better than ever.  1  hormonal acne Weight gain, brain fog, fatigue, loss of muscle tone, constipation, huge bloated belly. I was prescribed spironolactone to counteract cystic acne and extreme male pattern baldness -- a side effect of being overdosed (24 mg.) with bilateral injections of betamethasone into my knees over a year ago. Note that I am 74 years old and never had cystic acne in my life. I was a little afraid to take the spiro but I had reached the point where an acne nodule developed on the side bridge of my nose that was huge and had to be injected by my dermatologist with Kenalog. I was prescribed 50mg daily of sprio. Within two weeks my acne cleared and within 3 I started to see my hair regrow. But I also was getting a bloated belly and became constipated. Then I noticed weight gain. By week 4 I went from 101 to 103.5 lbs. I noticed no diuretic effect as I am already taking furosemide for edema. I started the drug on February 5, 2021 and stopped taking it on March 10, 2021. So 103.5 when I stopped. Today is March 19, 2021 and I have continued to gain weight. I am now up to 106 pounds!!!! I never weigh that much.. I am fit for my age -- eat under 1000 calories daily and hike 10-15 miles a week. I am freaking out and hoping that once my body readjusts the 5 plus pounds of flab will come off. I can not believe that doctors do not warn their patients that this drug causes massive weight gain in almost every one that takes it. A horrible drug!!!!! F 74 35 days

3  Idiopathic Hirsutism It started off really well for 6 months but in combination with other drugs (i.e. birth control), it stopped working as it was meant to and never really went back to its effectiveness even after stopping other interfering drugs. This happened twice! I stopped it after a year as it began to not really work at all without any lifestyle changes. F 24 1 years

5  Cystic Acne I'm very shocked to see the amount of people experiencing panic attacks associated with this medication. As someone who used to get sudden attacks I have to say I haven't had any side effects with Spironolactone, the only thing I do notice is I seem to get random twitches in my toes and I have put on weight but I don't believe it's directly related to this medication. I have suffered from absolutely atrocious acne ever since I was around 10. At 30 it was the worst I ever had. I was heartbroken. I literally tried it all. Last resort was Spironolactone and it was an absolute miracle! It took a couple months to kick in but 2 years later my skin is miraculously flawless! It's as if I won the lottery. F 33 2 years
