SPIRONOLACTONE  (SPIRONOLACTONE):  Spironolactone is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. It is also used to treat swelling (edema) caused by certain conditions (such as heart failure, liver disease) by removing excess fluid and improving symptoms such as breathing problems. This medication is also used to treat low potassium levels and conditions in which the body is making too much of a natural chemical (aldosterone). Spironolactone is known as a "water pill" (potassium-sparing diuretic).   FDA Approval Date: 1999-07-29 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  Acne Anxiety, depression, constant bathroom use, headaches This has been a miracle pill for my acne. It all started with product use erupting my skin but then it seemed to have turned hormonal. My derm first put me on doxy (which that caused extreme anxiety as well... was on it for 4-5 months) but that is only short term then transitioned into spiro. It worked so well but early in (which i didnt make the comnection until a few days ago) I felt off. Ive never had anxiety in my life and everything became massive to me. I was irritable and unkind which is the complete opposite of who I am normally. It was like I knew how I was acting and would try to control it but my body would not physically let me. It got to the point where I started to see a therapist and more recently thought a therapist wasnt cutting it, i needed someone who could perscribe me something. I didnt know how to escape this overwhelming feeling of hopelessness. I even told my therapist a few weeks ago, “i dont want to die. But i dont want to be around.” I couldnt figure it out because there were no outside factors causing me to feel this way and i didnt even think of the medication since i wasnt informed that this could be a side effect. Im on day 3 of not taking it and the anxiety has slowed down noticeably. I have no dount that if i wouldnt have made the correlation and stopped taking this, it wouldve gotten worse. Def a miracle for your skin and facial hair (i had peach fuzz that was noticeable and now its gone) but i wouldnt recommend it. Your mental he F 31 6 months

1  Hirsutism/ high testosterone Took for 2 years to reduce hair and lower testosterone levels (PCOS) . Noticed no difference in hair, but experienced extremely low libido, sore breasts, and fatigue. Stopped taking as soon as I made the connection of side effects to spironolactone. F 30 2 years

4  High Blood Pressure At 25mg a day I had bad irritability and still struggle with that. Sleepy after taking but if taking at night insomnia. I had high BP during the day and at night it was really high in the over 180 for the top number and over 100 at times on the bottom number. Spiro has cured that even at the low dose that I'm taking.  1  Acne I really wanted this to work because of my oily skin and hormonal acne. It did take some of the oiliness down, not completely but enough. I got to a point where I didn’t have one pimple where normally I’ve always got at least one. The problem is I got completely emotional and got anxiety attacks. I also couldn’t sleep. When I found myself crying yet again and had to ask myself what was wrong with me that’s when I realized it was the Spiro! F 42 2 weeks

3  Hormonal Acne Stubborn weight gain around lower belly and hips, brain fog, frequent urination, inability to lose weight, fatigue Spironolactone is great for hormonal acne. After three months my skin was perfect. However, over the years I have noticed slow weight gain concentrated around my hips and lower belly. My dermatologist assured me that this isn't a side effect, but I've read so many accounts online from women who have experienced this same stubborn weight gain. In addition to the weight, I just don't feel myself when I am taking this. I feel fatigue and brain fog, which seemed to only get worse as time went by. I stopped taking it a week ago and I already am feeling more like myself again. I am now attempting to manage my hormonal acne with diet. F 24 3 years

4   The main troublesome side effect of this drug is sexual problems. Even at a low dose it reduces ability and desire. I have also developed slight manboobs. This drug worked wonders for me at lowering blood pressure. I was over 140 sometimes 150 over 85 to 90. This drops me down to 120 over 65 most days. It has some troubling side effects though. Arms, legs, chest, under arms and even pubic hair. Still taking after a year and skin is all clear now but with loss of body hair and man boobs feeling a bit fem now. Does this have any feminizing effects? Feeling much different. M 26 1 years

1  Cystic acne Anxiety, depression, heart palpitations, dizziness This drug has caused me to have some of the worst anxiety I have had in years. It has made me have unwanted/intrusive thoughts that are disturbing, and it has caused me to feel extremely depressed. When I took it in the past, it had not caused anything like what I am experiencing now. I urge you if you already have GAD/Depression to use this medication with extreme caution as it can make it worse. F 23 23 days

5  Adult cystic acne Heart palpitations (mild). I'm now in peri-menopause and after being on spiro for years (with no weight gain) I've noticed low belly weight. My doc said because my hormones are naturally changing, I probably have estrogen dominance and spiro can contribute to that (blocks androgens which body can convert them to estrogen). So I started taking Indol-3-carbinol and the belly weight literally melted off. So I'd give caution to women who say spiro caused belly weight gain. Most likely it's your own body dealing with an already estrogen-heavy situation and when you add spiro it tips the scales into estrogen overload. This drug changed my face for the better. Wouldn't be without it. Drink plenty of water, excercise, get your blood tested once a year. F 48 3 years

2   Weight gain. I am very fit and gaining 15 pounds in 3 months was awful. I have been off the drug for 3 months now and I still can't get rid of the weight. Used to be proud of my body and now I hate looking in a mirror. Breast enlargement- returned to normal after stopped taking it. Nausea-thankfully stopped. Muscle loss-has not returned since stopping. Skin elasticity loss- not returned since stopping. My sex drive didn't exist- returned. I'm happy it cleared my cystic acne but it came at a very high cost of weight gain and loss of muscle mass for me that has not returned to normal. To those that say it's not effective under 150/100mg, not true! I had it work for cystic acne and bad side effects at 25mg. F 33 4 months

5  cystic acne Positive: Decreased sebum production. Decreased frequency, severity, and healing time of pimples. Decreased inflammatory response of facial skin. Weight loss; easier to maintain smaller waistline (Whether due to decreased bloating or actual weight? Don't know or care... does look better). Improved self esteem. General feeling of well-being. Negative: One episode of stress incontinence on the first day (ie. Coughing really hard)... never happened before or after that. Love it!!! F 30 3 months

5  Ridiculously heavy menstrual bleedi Dry mouth, tired, need lots of sleep, 8-9 hours. Sometimes I forget that I'm eating a lot of high potassium fruits in large quantities and I get really tired. This drug is amazing!! I don't know how I have lived without it all those years prior to having an endocrinologist prescribe it in my late thirties.. DRINK LOTS OF WATER and even add a pinch of salt if you're starting to feel weak or extra sleepy. No weight gan, no weight loss. F 48 10 times

5  Adult Acne/Cystic Acne This has been a miracle drug for me. My skin has cleared up so well, my confidence is back, and I couldn't be happier about that. No weight gain at all, although I am very active and workout 5x a week so I didn't expect to gain weight. My breasts grew as well. major perk. Only draw back was frequent spotting, which stopped around month 4.5. Took me 3 months to see real clearance in my skin but I recommend this to all my friends who suffer from adult onset acne. May not be right for everyone, but it was right for me. F 24 6 months
