SPIRONOLACTONE  (SPIRONOLACTONE):  Spironolactone is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. It is also used to treat swelling (edema) caused by certain conditions (such as heart failure, liver disease) by removing excess fluid and improving symptoms such as breathing problems. This medication is also used to treat low potassium levels and conditions in which the body is making too much of a natural chemical (aldosterone). Spironolactone is known as a "water pill" (potassium-sparing diuretic).   FDA Approval Date: 1999-07-29 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Hormonal acne I experienced the worst anxiety of my life, panic attacks, nausea and stomach pain. I was taking other medications at the time so I never made the connection until I finally felt like I was dying and slowly stopped taking some of the medications until I stopped the spirnolactone. There was instant relief. I would never take this again. F 21 6 months

1  hormonal acne I would feel extreme anxiety that caused me to throw up regularly (i'm talking minimum 3x a week) and I couldn't eat or sleep for months. I felt like I was genuinely dying from an unknown disease and I couldn't enjoy my entire summer because of how sick I got! If I was in a situation where I would feel even a little bit of anxiety I would throw up. It usually hit me hard at nighttime or early in the morning. I do not recommend this drug unless you THOROUGHLY research it beforehand. I still to this day have bad anxiety whenever I have stomach pains or nausea and the medication had ruined me for months of my life. I was miserable and cannot see myself ever taking it again.  1  Acne I have an anxiety disorder and have been doing really well for years. I started taking this medicine for my acne and on day 6 had a full blown panic attack. I'm still feeling the side effects from it. I will not be taking this medication anymore! I thought I did enough research on it before I started to take it. Please be aware before you take this medication if you suffer from anxiety and panic attacks. F 34 5 days

1  Hormonal acne I have been taking spironolactone for 1 week. I started noticing I was getting headaches and feeling nauseous and dizzy, and even getting negative thoughts but pushed it all to the side. As someone diagnosed with panic disorder at age 8 but hasn't had a panic attack in 4 years this has been one of the worst and most sudden experiences. I noticed earlier on a short hike I could barely get through without taking breaks which is unlike me. Then all of a sudden a few hours later i was in the car and got dizzy and end started crying and feeling like I was going to die, then more dark thoughts. I had to call my husband to come home and stay with me because I didn't want to be alone. Current resting heart rate at 90 bpm. Throwing them in the trash. F 29 6 days

3  Hormonal Acne While my skin cleared up dramatically, I started to notice random eye twitching, increased urination, increased thirst, anxiety, numbness, and irregular periods once my doctor increased my dose from 50 mg a day to 100 mg. I only now started researching what others have also experienced. I really regret not doing more research beforehand. I do not think the side effects are worth it at all. F 33 5 months

1  Acne Panic attack 3 hours after taking it. It started as blurred vision, then compounded into a full-blown panic attack. The thing about panic attacks is that they exhibit a lot of the same symptoms as anaphylaxis, so that made my anxiety even worse. I almost went to the ER because I thought my throat was swelling shut. My chest and throat felt tight and my heart was pounding. The skin on my face got slightly red and hot. My hands and toes were tingling/numb. I burst into tears. It was an absolutely horrible experience and I would rather struggle with breakouts than freak outs. I took it approximately 5 hours ago and I am feeling ok at the moment because I read so many of you experienced the same side effects. Thank you all for posting. F 31 1 days

1  Acne Anxiety, depression, panic attacks I suffer from severe anxiety and panic attacks and am on my mental health journey just as I am on my acne journey! This medication may help one but will completely ruin the other! I feel hopeless and worthless and like I don't want to leave my bed because I can't stop crying day 3 now. Then when you finally feel a little better the feelings creeps back up! I would way rather have acne for the rest of my life than be on this devil pill! Please reconsider taking this if you suffer the way I do! F 20 4 days

4  hormonal acne slightly lightheaded from time to time and made my periods irregular spironolactone plus tretinoin and a very simple, fragrance-free skin care routine really did wonders for my hormonal acne. it took about 3 months to finally see my skin clearing up. i still have acne marks left but no more pimples and tiny bumps! my skin is definitely the best it has ever been. another bonus is not losing as much hair daily. so much of my hair used to fall out in the shower because of the hormonal imbalance but that has dramatically decreased. the only side effect i really disliked is my period becoming irregular.  1  Hormonal Acne Unbearable anxiety, mood swings, irritability, mild depression at times, shakiness when upset, started fights out of thin air This drug made me crazy! The mood swings are like a roller coaster you can't get off. Went and saw a Functional Medicine nutritionist who figured out that Spiro was the culprit. Now combatting acne with foods and the OAT & Dutch tests to reduce Androgen levels. May have cleared my skin, but made my life 10x more difficult. There are alternative approaches that won't make you insane! F 25 12 months

4  Hormonal Acne I started Spironolactone about two years ago, and it took somewhere between 4-6 months for me to really see a difference. But now my skin is as clear as it has ever been. I occasionally get one pimple here and there but overall, very satisfied. Unfortunately, this medicine has completely destroyed my menstrual cycle and caused months without a period, then three in one month. I already had an irregular cycle before starting spiro but it definitely made it worse. F 17 2 years

4  Acne Within the past 3 days I have had pretty severe breast pain and tenderness. It is pretty constant. No other side effects and I am disappointed this is happening now. It feels like when I was breastfeeding and had mastitis, except without the nausea and feeling unwell. Cleared my acne quickly Potential weight gain but not sure if due to quarantine or the drug, breast pain and tenderness F 36 80 days

3  Hormonal Acne Started in September 2019 on 50 mg, started seeing results in the first 30 days and they were amazing. No discernible side effects, everything was great. By February of 2020 however, my body seemed to be "getting used to" the dosage, so my dermatologist upped it to 100 mg/1x a day. This was great, took about another month to see improvement, and my skin was at it's absolute best for about two months...then the side effects kicked in. Random lightheadedness, constant bleeding/spotting, constant low back pain to accompany the bleeding/spotting and cramping, super dry mouth to the point where I had bad breath constantly no matter how much water I drank, and I started to feel like I was becoming a crazy person. Mood swings, anxiety, and depressive tendencies when I had no history of that previously. It took me another 2 months to put two and two together and finally call my derm to tell her the side effects. She said she cannot confirm that the mood swings were caused by the spiro, but literally nothing else in my life would cause that - AND that all started happening at the same time as the lightheadedness and constant spotting. Also, spiro OBLITERATED my libido. I just stopped taking it yesterday so I really hope it returns soon. I'm rating it as a 3 because it definitely WORKS for acne. My skin looks amazing, better than I ever thought possible, BUT...it's not worth it for all the side effects. They are just too much. If you can start on 50mg and keep that do F 24 1 years

2  PCOS, hormonal acne, hirsutism Unfortunately I was not on it long enough to notice any difference in the things it was prescribed for. I had to stop because I developed a red, itchy, rash with raised skin and blister like appearance on my chest (listed side effect), BUT also I noticed a major increase in negative thoughts, anxiety, dizziness, fast heart rate, darker urine, and nighmares. Told my doctor and STOPPED immediately. F 36 3 weeks

4  HS Derm prescribed for HS. Has helped, hair loss stopped after being on antibiotics for 5 months with no benefit. So still plugging away hoping it gets better. Derm upped to 150mg, saw no benefit so went back to 100. I guess time will tell. Face was never broke out so I can't speak about facial acne. But hair is growing in thicker & growing like a weed.  3  Acne Worked great for my acne. Side effects aren't great. Experienced exercise intolerance and can't run like I usually do. My heart rate skyrockets when I start exercising like I'm out of shape. In the last few years I've experienced anxiety which has gradually gotten worse. Extreme tightness in my chest. I get anxiety after exercise too. I thought it was just stress so tried Zoloft for a couple of months which made my anxiety worse. I finally wondered if it might be the spiro. Stopped taking it and anxiety is gone so far. Really bummed since it really helped my acne but not worse the anxiety. F 42 3 years

1  Hormonal Acne I did well with Spironolactone in the past and decided to try it again recently. It gave me horrible panic attacks, anxiety and insomnia. Of course my acne came back full force :( I had no idea this medication caused all of this. Particularly the insomnia where I would be up for 2-3 days without being able to take any naps! My sleep improved but my skin got worse. The anxiety alone wasn't worth staying on this medication at all. I think I'd rather deal with trying to manage my acne another way. F 37 2 months

2  Hormonal acne Increased anxiety. Dry mouth which was bearable , increased toilet visits. Seemed to be starting to help my acne however I am feeling very anxious. I am currently experiencing a stressful time so possibly this is related but I feel it at least makes anxiety worse. I will stop use and possibly try at a less stressful period if needed.
