| 1 | UTI | Panic attacks, loss of appetite, unable to sleep, nausea while trying to eat, dizziness, weakness, difficulty thinking. Hence I stopped taking it halfway through the prescription (3.5 of 7 days). | I was given 28 pills but I could not get past 14. The side-effects were just too severe: no sleep possible of the 3 nights I was on it because of the panic attacks, no appetite, nausea whenever I tried to eat, dizziness, depression, confusion, weakness. I was afraid to stop the medication because they say to always finish your antibiotics but I was even more afraid to continue especially after reading what others had experienced at the website briandeer dot com. I've never felt this horrible or scared in my entire life. Some people had panic attacks like me, some lost platelets in their blood, and even more frightening after stopping medication some people said they still felt these side-effects for days, weeks, years. I'd rather have chronic UTI than panic attacks and loss of appetite for the rest of my life, so I stopped the pills yesterday. The panic attacks stopped and I slept for the first time in 3 days. I ate a meal, though it wasn't easy. Also, on the 8th day I developed an allergic reaction. | I was prescribed this drug because I'm allergic to amoxicillin/penicillin and the doctor wanted to make sure it wasn't MRSA in the abscess, but I had to quit with 4 pills left when I developed a severe rash/hives all over my face, stomach, arms, and upper legs. I was diagnosed with a severe sulfonamide allergy and given antihistamines to clear up the rash, which finally faded on the 5th day after it began, but the itching on my legs persisted for some time. I didn't realize how many side effects the drug was having until I wasn't taking it any more and suddenly felt a lot better. The only thing about it was when I was almost at the end of my bottle, I broke out in a rash that spread over my whole body and itched like crazy. The blood tests showed very high liver enzymes and due to symptoms the doctors thought I passed a gall stone damaging my liver. However, all tests showed no gall bladder problems and I improved greatly in the hospital. My liver enzymes came down. Even when I got the rash, another doctor said it was probably strep, but to quit the Bactrim just in case. I took a lot of prednisone and antihistimines to get the swelling and redness down. This happened four months ago and my skin is still a little bit pink and my face gets a red flush every evening. I had what I would describe as an emotional breakdown on the seventh day of taking this drug and I still don't feel quite back to normal. I believe this drug is useful for some people but of the several doctors and nurses I talked to, none of them knew much about the potential harm Bactrim can cause. I was lucky--this drug can kill and seriously harm people and many medical professionals don't seem to know this.
