SINGULAIR  (MONTELUKAST SODIUM):  Montelukast is used regularly to prevent the wheezing and shortness of breath caused by asthma and decrease the number of asthma attacks. Montelukast is also used before exercise to prevent breathing problems during exercise (bronchospasm). This medication can help decrease the number of times you need to use your rescue inhaler. This medication is also used to relieve symptoms of hay fever and allergic rhinitis (such as sneezing, stuffy/runny/itchy nose). This medication does not work right away and should not be used to treat sudden asthma attacks or other breathing problems. This drug works by blocking certain natural substances (leukotrienes) that may cause or worsen asthma and allergies. It helps make breathing easier by reducing swelling (inflammation) in the airways.   FDA Approval Date: 1998-02-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  allergies/chronic sinus infections none I plan to drop my use of Singulair because of all the current negative reviews about it. I also take flonase and allegra (generic of both) and I hope these two drugs will "hold" my allergies in check. F 66 5 years

1  Allergies and asthma Difficulty sleeping, bad muscle cramps, mood swings, very irritable, depressed. Though it helped with allergies and improved my breathing a little it was not much better than a generic allergy pill and definitely not worth taking in light of the side effects. M 66 5 months

1  asthma I have asthma, but came down with a nasty case of bronchitis, which I didn't seem to be able to shake. My doctor prescribed Singulair along with a cortisone inhaler. A few days ago I was actually seeing an improvement, but for 3 days I have been plagued with an upset stomach, headaches, sore throat, and a general feeling of hopelessness. I strongly suspect the Singulair and I am going to stop taking it. F 67 7 days

1  Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria I have chronic idiopathic urticaria (8 months so far) . Side effects of this Rx were nightmares, night sweats, body rash, swelling of face, eyes, lips and throat. Dry cough and Headache. Chest pain between my breasts. Renal failure. Low grade fever. Inability to concentrate with short term memory loss. This reaction reaction sent me to ER, as I could not breath. Oh, and forget about sleeping. That reaction to Singulair made the hives become angiodemic and worse than ever. I took me days to get it out of my system. I tried taking this medicine about a month ago off and on and ended up in ER on a drip, but I was taking so many other meds, I did not make the connection. This week I took 2 doses, two nights in a row, the symptoms happened very fast, on the 2nd night, I woke up with my face & lips swelled. This is the fourth day 4 am and I would have gone to the ER again, but I was able to medicate myself per Doctor's advice: 50 mg benadryl, 300 mg zantac, 20 mg hydroxizine, 10 mg zyrtec and .5 mg xanax. My albutarol inhaler aided to open my airway. I did not use the Epi. I am hoping I can get it out of my system by tomorrow because I have to work tomorrow. It's hard to cover a swollen face and lips, looks like I have been beaten up. It's a shame I cannot return the Rx to get my money back at the drug store. F 67 2 days

4  Asthma It did stop my very severe asthma attacks, but I did have side-effects. Immediately after taking the first dosage, I experienced deep sleep with "REM" / "rapid-eye-movement" stage and vivid PLEASANT dreams. Dosage is taken before bedtime with a glass of water. I experience frequent night-time urination; 2 or 3 times sometimes, but occasionally not at all. But, I wake completely rested regardless! That's probably due to the induced deep sleep. I also get mild night-time leg cramps probably due to the diuretic effect of the drug causing the dumping of water. In addition, I experience darkened urine and heart palpitations with pounding beats. Otherwise, I feel fine. Very recently, My doctor detected a "very significant" heart murmur and I am about to be tested for that. This is in-spite of having detailed examinations six (6), nine (9) and eleven (11) months ago without any any such detection; or ever. None-to-"significant"! So, that is what drew me to this website, to see if anyone else has experienced heart valve damage from using Singulair or its generic formula. 68 6 months

3  Asthma Only been taking this for 6 weeks. After about 5 weeks it shifted my sleep patterns by 3 hours earlier. For years I would go to bed at 2330 and wake up at 0915. Now I am in bed at 2030 and wide awake by 0630. This is not necessarily a bad thing except my dreams seem to be more vivid and unusual. Seems to be an uptick in libido which is consistent with others reporting emotional and hormonal issues. It helped my asthma somewhat. Prescribed by the VA--I am a veteran. I am appreciative of this site for the user information submitted. M 68 6 weeks

2  asthma cramping and pain in lower back This medicine relieved my asthma symptoms but unfortunately while taking the medicine I experienced intense lower back pain and cramping. I went off the medicine; the pain went away. I tried the medicine again and the pain came back so I stopped taking it altogether. I'm sad about it because it clearly relieves the asthma symptoms.  1  Chronic Bronchitis Irregular heartbeat, heart rate that varies from a low of 68 BPM to 160 over a 24-hour period, weight gain, inability to concentrate I never connected Singulair to any of these symptoms until I was sent to a cardiologist for high blood pressure (my normal blood pressure is low) and a very high heart rate. After a thorough heart work-up, my cardiologist could not find a reason for the symptoms and suggested that Singulair was the problem. I have now gone off the drug and will see if it makes a difference. F 69 2 years

1  Allergies Severe paranoia, delusions, frightening experiences , believed a dead body was buried in the backyard , believed people are listening to telephone conversations. Changed telephone number 3 times. Believed some body was injecting me with poisons at night. Believed neighbors are coming in to the house through the attic . Believed relatives are against me. Called 911 multiple times . Had all locks in the house on a holiday by paying extra to locksmith for emergency lock change 1400.00 dollars. Symptoms continued after stopping the drug. This could be a very harmful drug for some people. Unless you are already on it with no problems no one should start new on this drug as who will get side effects cannot be predicted. F 70 4 days

1  allergies Had severe acid reflux. Had no idea it was linked to this medication. Took this medication for 3 years and I stopped taking it because of the cost and noticed within a week the acid reflux was gone. I had been taking 40mg of protonix twice a day and it did not even help. I had never had any problem in all my life, not even gas or burping. This was a horror!! F 72 3 days
