SINGULAIR  (MONTELUKAST SODIUM):  Montelukast is used regularly to prevent the wheezing and shortness of breath caused by asthma and decrease the number of asthma attacks. Montelukast is also used before exercise to prevent breathing problems during exercise (bronchospasm). This medication can help decrease the number of times you need to use your rescue inhaler. This medication is also used to relieve symptoms of hay fever and allergic rhinitis (such as sneezing, stuffy/runny/itchy nose). This medication does not work right away and should not be used to treat sudden asthma attacks or other breathing problems. This drug works by blocking certain natural substances (leukotrienes) that may cause or worsen asthma and allergies. It helps make breathing easier by reducing swelling (inflammation) in the airways.   FDA Approval Date: 1998-02-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  1st for Asthma, then for allergies Depression, moodiness, loss of libido, loss of interest in hobbies, life etc. After hearing that Singulair was linked to people committing suicide, I decided to stop taking it. Without doctor supervision (I would not suggest doing that), I went off it cold turkey after being on it for 7 to 8 years (I 'quit' around the end of March). I used to feel 'frozen' inside -- not temperature-wise, but emotionally. It was scary to get all this feeling back in just a few days. I've been happy for the first time in many, many years. Unaccountably happy. I had thought the emotional problems were related to circumstances and aging, which might have had a contribution. But I am on other medication that seem to be controlling the asthma and allergies and see no reason to go back taking Singulair. The change for the better in my emotional state has been dramatic and I want to stay this way. F 50 7 years

1  Allergies Headaches emotional. I would sleep good and wake up tired. Bad dreams. Tremors nervousness, body aches, itching and couldn't stay awake. Oh numbness. Thoughts of suicide. This was in a two day ( 2 dosage) period. I would not recommend this medication. I took the generic brand montelukast. F 50 1 days

1  ASTHMA Lower back ache, achy knees and ankles, irritability, moodiness. I only used it twice: 1st day prescribed, then skipped a couple of days and took another. I did feel some relief on my chest tightness within 1/2 a day of taking it. But I cant explain the unusual lower back and knee pain I still have, except reading this I would have to strongly say its possible. I dont like long term medicines anyway, especially with all the side effects I DID read about before taking it. I even told the doctor I did not want it. Then asked the pharmacist her opinion, but she felt it was a very good drug. I trust your (users) opinions well over a non-user, and have decided not to use MONTELUKAST. (I dont even like that name!)  5  Asthma No side effects at all on Singulair. Generics cause wheezing and allergies This drug has changed my life. Half an hour after taking the first tablet, I actually felt my lungs opening up, and for the first time in as long as I can remember, I don't think about my breathing. I can laugh, run, climb stairs, I've dropped my use of inhalers by half, and rarely need ventolin. The difference has been noticed by all my friends and colleagues. On the rare occasions I miss a tablet, I am wheezing within a few hours. Amazing, life changing drug. And although I didn't take it for allergic rhinitis/sinusitis, it has cleared that up too, and I have a sense of smell for the first time in eleven years. F 51

5  asthma It has helped me TREMENDOUSLY, however, I can't get off it anymore without issues. I started taking it for occasional bad episodes, and would ween myself off it. However, now it seems like my lungs cannot breath well without it. Aside from that I consider it a miracle drug. It allows me to spend time, hours, in homes with cats. Truly a phenomenon for me.  5  Vertigo None I was having episodes of terrible vertigo. My doctor prescribed Singulair for me. I have COPD but take Advair for that. I'm not sure how this medicine works for vertigo for me, but it does. I stopped taking it for a few nights because I ran out. The vertigo came back. I will never stop taking this medicine it is a God send! F 51 8 months

5  asthma none, zero, zip It's a wonderdrug for my mild asthma. I have some allergies and also cold weather/exercise induced asthma. I used to have to use my inhaler after walking or shoveling snow in the winter, and before exercising every day year round inside. Since beginning this drug I have had to use an inhaler maybe 3 times when I have had a respiratory bug....that's 3 times over the last 12 years; as opposed to daily use of the inhaler prior to beginning this drug. Zero complaints!!! F 51 12 years

5  allergic rhinitis none I've come to the conclusion that I must have had a mild form of asthma along with allergic rhinitis because within a day of taking Singulair my breathing, consequently my running, was significantly better. I took deeper breaths and had more endurance than ever before. It's amazing how one can exercise when you can breathe :) F 51 2 months

5  allergies None This is like a miracle drug for me! I lived constantly with symptoms of chronic allergies: runny, stuffy nose; sinus headaches; chronic cough, etc. I've been taking Singulair for just about a year and have been 100% allergy-symptom free for all of that time. A+++++ F 51 1 years

4  non-specif resp. issues, allergies Increased blood pressure, massive weight gain I was prescribed 10 mg/day, but after watching my BP rise, cut back to 5. Six months and 40 pounds later, I found out that it causes weight gain. I quit taking it the next day. /May/ have helped the breathing, but not worth the weight. M 51 6 months

2  Allergies/asthma After 8 days, I was experiencing stomach pains and mild diarrhea. After 10 days, I woke up with extreme abdominal pain. By midday of day 10 I had join pain, headache, chills......flu like symptoms. I was already concerned the Singulair might be causing the stomach issues, so I did not take it that night. I woke up in the morning feeling about 75% better. Just a mild stomach ache remained. I also had an eye appt that next day. During the glaucoma screen I pressented with high pressure readings which I had never had before. I looked it up and found there's a link to Singulair and Glaucoma. I have completely stopped taking this medication. F 51 10 days

2  allergies, sinus problems YIKES!!! I took it a few years ago and quit because of the insomnia and general agitation it caused me. Tried it again recently and this time I've got the previous side effects PLUS muscle spasms in back, ribs (intercostal muscles between ribs), and jaw. Scary. I thought I was getting TMJ, only to find the problem goes away if I stop taking Singulair. My back and ribs hurt so much I thought something was wrong with my lungs. This is too bad, all the muscle spasms, insomnia, and crabbiness, because the drug WORKS as far as helping me breathe better. Less wheezing, less stuffiness, but it's just not worth it. Looks like I'm back to Benadryl and grogginess. I'll accept that before I agree to anymore muscle spasms. ugh. F 51 3 days

1  asthma Insomnia, muscle aches, daily morning headache, feeling like ants under my skin, irritability (extreme), fatigue not relieved by full night's rest, "brain fog", inability to concentrate on difficult tasks, swelling of ankles, rash on back and legs, dry eyes, dry mouth, extremely dry lips, always thirsty, tinnitus. I was on this med for five years, prescribed by pulmonary doc for asthma. I had been feeling increasingly tired, achy, irritable and fed up with life in general. I could not seem to concentrate at work and would make errors that I never made before. The swelling and itching and dryness was getting worse. I went to my GP and she told me I was going through menopause and was "depressed" and that I needed anti-anxiety meds. I refused to take the RX, and came home and started researching Singulair as I began to realize that the not feeling well had started the same year I was "diagnosed" with asthma. When I found this website, I knew I had to get off this drug. I have been off it for three weeks now, and I cannot believe how much better I feel already. I am praying that most of my symptoms will abate if I continue to clear my system of this drug. When my allergy symptoms get worse, I take Benadryl, makes me a little sleepy, but at least I don't have the "brain f F 51 5 years
