SINGULAIR  (MONTELUKAST SODIUM):  Montelukast is used regularly to prevent the wheezing and shortness of breath caused by asthma and decrease the number of asthma attacks. Montelukast is also used before exercise to prevent breathing problems during exercise (bronchospasm). This medication can help decrease the number of times you need to use your rescue inhaler. This medication is also used to relieve symptoms of hay fever and allergic rhinitis (such as sneezing, stuffy/runny/itchy nose). This medication does not work right away and should not be used to treat sudden asthma attacks or other breathing problems. This drug works by blocking certain natural substances (leukotrienes) that may cause or worsen asthma and allergies. It helps make breathing easier by reducing swelling (inflammation) in the airways.   FDA Approval Date: 1998-02-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  asthma Vaginal and rectal dryness I see by the other comments that vaginal and rectal dryness is not common but does happen. Good to know as my doc thought Singulair was not the cause. Funny as soon as I stopped taking Singulair, the problem soon corrected itself! F 48 15 days

1  Singulair Singulair gives me the most vivid nightmares. It is awful! I do not want o go back to sleep, that is how vivid they are. This drug needs to be taken off the market. I will take it for a few days, then stop taking it, when my dreams get so bad. Please get this off the market! F 48 1 years

1  Allergies and Asthma Dizziness, very tired, headaches, sore throat, upset stomach, painful tummy, indigestion, mood swings, forgetfulness, mood swings, rash, depression. Highly dissatisfied. I do not recommend. I suffer exercise and allergy induced asthma. I was using a rescue inhaler daily so my doctor suggested trying Singulair daily for 3 months. I've taken it for 25 days and will never again. I'm normally a very together, upbeat, organized person. I've had so many side effects in so many directions I'm in complete despair and kicking myself for taking the med so long. I had such "wuzzy brain" I thought I was pregnant. My inability to focus and function has been greatly impaired this month to the point of severely hurting my life. I fear I've permanently hurt my body with this drug. F 48 25 days

5  Severe asthma and allergies I am thinking of this as a miracle drug I have mastocytosis and was having severe asthma symptoms and had done a round of prednisone and 3 inhalers for 4 months. Took this and my asthma is so much better I can do what I need and the nebulizer can collect dust again. Yes I am still having mild symptoms and mild joint pain but I can walk and breathe. Have minimal side effects 49 20 days

5  rhinnitis and GERD initially some mild headaches This combined with about 3 months of Nexium when it started, has completely resolved a fairly severe case of GERD that had symptoms very similar to heart attack on several occasions. Also, I've been reading these comments and noticing MANY SYMPTOMS THAT ALSO CORRESPOND TO THE SIDE EFFECTS OF ASPARTAME, and I'm wondering how many of these people are taking the chewable variety, and the problem is the Aspartame (see www.sweetpoison.com/aspartame-side-effects.html for example of list.) My 8 yr old son has taken singulair for years also, and we cut the adult dose in half to avoid the aspartame - no problems. F 49 4 years

5  Asthma None This drug has been a godsend for my asthma. I rarely need my inhaler. Advair was a nightmare for me but this works great! F 49 12 months

5  Allergies & Asthma No side effects experienced I talked to my doctor about the "New" warnings. I do not experience depression or suicidal thoughts on Singulair. So I am back on Singulair for this allergy/asthma season. I have experienced no side effects. I take Singulair in the morning. It has once again relaxed my breathing and totally improved my performance. If allergies seem bad on any day I will also take and Allegra 60 in the evening and that works very well. I have only needed my Albuterol 1 time since April. F 49 2 months

5  Asthma & allergies I have been taking Singulair for 10 years or so and had first taken Accolate. I have not noticed any side effects but have had a huge improvement in my symptoms and can quickly tell if I have missed a dose. This drug has been a lifesaver for me. F 49 10 years

5  asthma none Singulair works amazingly well at controlling asthma for both myself and my 9yr old daughter. We've both been on it for 3 years. It has been a godsend-all the coughing, wheezing, etc, are gone when we are on this medication, and neither of us have had any of the side effects that other people have written about. F 49 3 years

4  asthma, allergic rhinitis Depression, suicidal thoughts Had taken Singulair for 5 years, during which I was prescribed an anti-depressant. Stopped taking Singulair during a testing period to check on effectiveness. After resuming for 3 weeks, severe depression. Saw news report and stopped again, much better after 1 week. F 49 4 years

4  Asthma, nasal allergies I'm not sure if this is a side effect or an ongoing problem. For the past 6 months I've been experiencing extreme on and off blocking of my ears. Since commencing Singulair my ears appear worse! Asthma is great and allergic rhinitis and allergies great. Has anyone else experienced this problem with their ears? No other side effects! I'm sleeping really well- a good 8 hours a night solidly, no dreams or other problems. My asthma is perfect at this short stage. F 49 4 days

3  Allergies, Asthma Arrhythmia's. When I first started taking this medication, I got anxiety and major depression. But I hated all the inhalers I had to take so I pushed through it and the depression and anxiety went away. I have gotten arrhythmia (irregular heart beat / palpitations) from other medications like Prednisone and some antibiotics. I've been to the ER several times this past year for palpitations, each time my blood work came back ok. The last time I went to the E.R. for palpitations was almost 2 months ago but I was just coming off of an antibiotic, I assumed it was from that and waited for it to pass. Well, it's not passing and the only other medication I'm taking that isn't something I've been on for years is Montelukast. All I'm taking every day are my usual vitamins, magnesium and maintenance inhaler "Qvar"....and Montelukast. I hate to go off of it, but I don't want to risk my heart having problems. We'll see if the arrhythmia stops after stopping this drug. F 49 13 months

2  Asthma I had just a small corner of a children's tablet (I believe it was a 10 mg. chewable tablet) and my rear neck muscles got tight and I had problems concentrating for a few hours. I was aware of my surroundings but felt weird in a manner I cannot describe. This was one of the strangest feelings I have ever had. It did stop the asthma, but I would not take it again with those side effects. It just wasn't worth it. My doctor put me on Advair Diskus instead. My allergy doctor said that he found that his patients either respond well to Singulair or they have severe (not necessarily life-threatening) effects. He switched me to Advair Discus instead.  1  allergies Last night I started crying uncontrollably for a reason which should have not made me cry at all. I could not stop crying. I awoke this morning and am still crying. I feel so sad. I NEVER NEVER cry. I loathe crying and am usually very in control of my emotions. This is scary. I want to keep taking it to see if it helps my allergies, but don't know if I should. I feel I will just cry my way through work today. This is so unlike me. F 49 3 days
