SINGULAIR  (MONTELUKAST SODIUM):  Montelukast is used regularly to prevent the wheezing and shortness of breath caused by asthma and decrease the number of asthma attacks. Montelukast is also used before exercise to prevent breathing problems during exercise (bronchospasm). This medication can help decrease the number of times you need to use your rescue inhaler. This medication is also used to relieve symptoms of hay fever and allergic rhinitis (such as sneezing, stuffy/runny/itchy nose). This medication does not work right away and should not be used to treat sudden asthma attacks or other breathing problems. This drug works by blocking certain natural substances (leukotrienes) that may cause or worsen asthma and allergies. It helps make breathing easier by reducing swelling (inflammation) in the airways.   FDA Approval Date: 1998-02-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  chronic sinusitis, asthma none. All my life I have had severe headaches and infections from my chronic sinusitis and I developed asthma in the 5th grade. I used to sleep all the time and I counld'nt really function in everyday life. When I started taking singulair practically all my problems vanished. The only bad thing is when I forget to take it my asthma comes back with a vengence and I can hardly get out of bed because my sinuses are in such bad shape. F 17 10 months

3  Mild Asthma and allergies My daugther was diagnosed with mild asthma at age 5. By age 6 she was started on chewable singulair and eventually moved up to the 10mg tablet. She has progressively gotten sicker with time. Not her asthma, but with these crazy symptoms. She was diagnosed with migraines at age 10. For the last three years her quality of life has declined so that she has only had one or two good days a week. She completely missed the last semester of the 11th grade and will have to repeat it. Her symptoms have been: headaches (cluster, migraine and mild), leg pain, rapid heart rate, chronic fatigue, rash like psorasis on her elbows at times, severe abdominal pain, nausea and vomitting, occasional nightmares, foggy thinking, hunger, and reflux, mood swings and abnormal periods. She was recently diagnosied with sub-clinical hypothyroidism. She has started on Sythroid and after a month has shown some improvement. I took her off the singulair about 2 weeks ago after finding this site and reading about all these side effects. I don't know if the singulair is the total culprit or not but, I took her off of the Singulair to see. It may have been what has caused the sub-clinical hypothyroidism also. She has been on it for years and progressively gotten worse. She has had mutliple GI tests that have turned up nothing but this could have been the reason all along. We have been to about 14 Doctors total with the various symptoms including her Pediatrician, Pediatric Gastrointestinal Specialist, Neurologist and Allergist. She has much improved over the last couple of weeks and is starting to act like a normal 17 year old. I had even started her in counceling 6 weeks ago because of the depression she has experienced from being sick all the time. She has not had F 17 11 years

1  asthma/ allergies Increased eating and weight gain, about 25 pounds. Extreme emotional changes. Anger and agressivness. Unable to concentrate, grades in school went downhill. Increased bruising and sensitivity. Numbness. Unable to sleep, waking up constantly. Crazy and sometimes disturbing dreams. Rashes, scaly skin, and itchyness. I would not reccomend this drug. It helped me very slgihtly, but not enough to have to deal with all the changes it made to me and my life. F 17 10 months

1   Singulair Generic Name: montelukast Montelukast is a CysLT1 antagonist; it blocks the action of leukotriene D4 (and secondary ligands LTC4 and LTE4) on the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor CysLT1 in the lungs and bronchial tubes by binding to it. The cysteinyl leukotrienes LTC4, LTD4, and LTE4 are important mediators of human bronchial asthma. Leukotriene D4 is one of the leukotrienes. Its functions in the body are bronchoconstriction, vasoconstriction, contraction of smooth muscle, and increasing vascular permeability. Other leukotrienes that function in a similar manner are leukotrienes C4 and E4. Studies have suggested that LTE4 works through its own distinct receptor, and although one has not yet been discovered, research is ongoing to isolated and characterize an LTE4-specific receptor.[ Why would you allow a receptor to be Blocked when we don't even know what it is ?  2  Severe Allergies Extreme depression, anxiety, panic attacks, heart racing, extreme fear, complete change in personality, insomnia, hopelessness, tingling in legs I started taking Singulair last year after I was treated for a horrible sinus infection that lasted about 2 months. I have had allergies all my life, but they got very severe since last year. I began to feel severely depressed and anxious all the time, as if the world was ending or something horrible would happen. I have always been a happy, extremely positive person and all of the sudden my whole personality changed. I experienced extreme fear everyday, extreme anxiety, excessive crying, and my heart was racing. I had a sinus infection a month ago that I was treated for and my allergist thought that now I was still feeling horrible from the infection, as well as my horrible seasonal allergies. My mom took me to the doctor yesterday after I got home from school because I was still experiencing horrible emotional symptoms. My allergist said to stop taking Singulair. We had no idea this could cause me to feel soo horrible!!! I stopped taking it last night and I am already starting to feel like myself again. DO NOT TAKE SINGULAIR! Epecially do not prescirbe this drug to children, I've never felt so horrible or so scared in my life. They should be sued! F 18 1 years

2  First time seasonal allergies Increased anxiety; nausea, made worse by anxiety, which caused decreased appetite; itchy/scratchy throat which I believe was from Singulair, not allergies. I had never had seasonal allergies much before that I was aware of, but I had been having a lot of "colds" where I'd feel run down and have sinus issues. My doctor told me they were seasonal allergies, and prescribed me Singulair. I did notice a little decrease in sinus issues, especially at first, but not even an amazing improvement. I have a history of mild anxiety, but the past 5 days it's been way worse and different than my anxiety before. I'm 99% sure it's from the Singulair. My throat has also been really scratchy, which I don't think is from the allergies since it didn't start until I started Singulair. I'm stopping Singulair and for now I guess I'll just stick to using a neti pot, which I would recommend to anyone with sinus issues by the way. F 18 7 days

2  Allergies & Asthma Depression & Anxiety Took Singulair on and off from age 13-16. I never really took the meds consistently until my sophomore year of high school. I was also depressed and anxious that year. I would break down crying twice a week to almost every day. I don't think it was 100% because of the medicine, but it may have contributed to the problem. I stopped taking it and the depression went away around the same time. F 18 3 years

2  Allergic Rhinitis, Mild Asthma Worked well after two weeks. It was like my allergies were suddenly cured. Just as quickly it altered my mood and I went into deep emotional distress. I become increasingly irritable and started panicking. I couldn’t go into a busy store without having an overload of my senses and needing to flee. No one really understood me and when I brought this up to my allergist she looked at me like I had five heads and said that she usually sees agitation in young children. Nonetheless I was off of it immediately and side effects were gone quickly. Be careful and do your research. It is said that people who already have a history of anxiety disorder or have had depression should beware this medication; it can quicken these problems and some even become suicidal. F 18 1 months

1  shortness of breath/ asthma This kicked in for my asthma right away, but the side effects were NOT worth it. It started with diarrhea but nothing major. Then i woke up every morning feeling fatigued and hung out as if i didn’t get any sleep at all. Then my mood changed, i was snapping at people and becoming irritable so easy, i got depressed. I already have anxiety and it was under control but this just sent it into over drive. Panic attacks all the time, everyday was a blur. DO NOT TAKE THIS! i don’t know why it’s even on the market especially for children and teens. i took it for a month and stopped and i feel better but i’m still recovering. Research what this drug does to people before you take it don’t make my mistake. Had some strange vivid dreams also. F 18 1 months

1  Allergies Depression, Anxiety, Suicidal thoughts, aggression, nightmares I knew the side effects even before I started taking this, and I'm glad I knew because I would have stayed taking this medicine and it would've been torture. I quickly began to feel sad and it was a constant feeling. I couldn't even be around family or friends because I would just begin to cry. I also have been fighting more recently with my boyfriend. The first 3 days I took this medicine I have had the worst nightmares of my life. Keep in mind that I have never suffered from any mental illnesses, but this pill really changed the way I viewed my life and I will never be taking this again. F 18 5 days

1  Asthma and Allergies Increased allergy attacks, morning asthma, mood swings, weight gain. I started taking singular when I was a child around the age of 6-9. When I was younger I would tell my mom about my symptoms and she would tell me that it wasn't the singular and I had to keep taking it. Eventually my doctor wrote a new prescription and I didn't tell my mom about it because I hated taking it. Recently I started taking it again, I've been on it for about a week and all my symptoms have come back plus weight gain. I thought I would give it another try but I think I'm going off it again. This is a horrible drug and no child should ever be forced to take it. F 18 3 years

1  Asthma My boyfriend took Singulair for about 3 years, during the time he has experienced anxiety, brain fog, depression, eczema and some muscle aches. Being a teenager he thought most of it was due to changing hormones and such. For a while he could not afford his medication, until about ten days ago. All these syptoms have returned which has led us to believe they were side effects from Singulair. He is usually very laid back and quite happy, but would suddenly fall into states of aloofness, and would say that he could not fall asleep at 2 a.m. because he would have irrational fears that he would die. He has also been experiencing itchiness around his penis, and a significantly decreased libido, as well as some sores near his mouth. The only possible cause seems to be singulair though few have listed side effects to the genitalia or libido. After reading through askapatient.com we have come to the conclusion that he should stop taking Singulair, however his asthma is quite severe and we wish to find a new medication as soon as possible. We are currently looking at Claritin as an alternative to Singulair, but are trying to be more cautious about medication this time. The bottle which Singulair came in does not have drug ingredient information on it so we cannot compare it to Claritin. If you have any information about another medication as an alternative to Singulair, the ingredients in Singulair, experiencing similar symptoms as above from other medications, or the effects of Claritin in comparison to Singulair we would be most grateful. Thank you all so much for your posts, and we wish the best for you all. M 18 10 days
