 EXTRAPYRAMIDAL MOVEMENT DISORDERS

 Type: Rx Drug

MIRAPEX  (PRAMIPEXOLE DIHYDROCHLORIDE):  Pramipexole is used alone or with other medications to treat Parkinson's disease. It can improve your ability to move and decrease shakiness (tremor), stiffness, slowed movement, and unsteadiness. It may also decrease the number of episodes of not being able to move ("on-off syndrome"). This medication is also used to treat a certain medical condition (restless legs syndrome - RLS) that causes an unusual urge to move the legs. Symptoms usually occur at night along with uncomfortable/unpleasant feelings in the legs. This medication can decrease these symptoms and thereby improve sleep. Pramipexole is a dopamine agonist that works by helping to restore the balance of a certain natural substance (dopamine) in the brain.   FDA Approval Date: 1997-07-01 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

Since beginning the .25mg dosage she has experienced memory loss (forgetting days of the week and dates), headaches, and feeling extremely tired. F 66 45 days

1  RLS Extreme Nausea, Chronic Headaches, Bizarre behavior, Compulsive behavior (started smoking flavored cigars and had to smoke them-- could not "not smoke them", Selfsihness, Change in mood, Change in demeanor, Change in personality, Anorexia, Anger, Sleep Disorders, Compulsive shopping, compulsion to drink, sompulsion to smoke and other addicitve behaviors DANGER! DO NOT TAKE THIS DRUG UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO!!! My wife had moderate RLS and the doctor gave her a prescription of .50 mg. She has been taking it for 9 months every day once a day and she lost 35 lbs that she didnt have to lose-- she was already very thin. Her personality changed to being angry and down-- no patience with me or kids, etc. I watched helplessly as the woman I love and adore changed into somone I did not know. She started smoking flavored cigars and I have alergies to smoke, and cant stand the tast smell, etc. She would not even consider giving them up. I left. With some good advice from a friend I came back and asked some pre-thought-out questions to try and get to the bottom of it. MIRAPEX! This all started when she started taking mirapex for her legs? I was baffled. This drug nearly cost me my family, my wife and has cost me in other ways as well. She is coming off of it now and experiencing bad side effects (dreams, seeing things, pain, etc). DANGER! STAY AWAY FROM THIS DRUG!! F 30 9 days

1  RLS, PLMD I took Mirapex for several years and during that time my weight went up to over 270 pounds. I went off Mirapex for a year because I could not afford it and lost all the excess weight. Went back on it 2 months ago and have gained 15+ pounds. I didn't realize the Mirapex was the cause of my prior severe weight gain. The doctor never discussed it as a cause. After going back on and the sudden weight gain I did my own research and have since discovered this problem. I have a Dr appointment next week. I am discontinuing. Would rather use Vicodin!  1  Parkinsons swollen splotchy red aching legs, insomnia, sleep attacks during the day even while driving, compulsive shopping, huge weight gain I didn't realize that I should watch out for these symptoms and that they were caused by Mirapex. complained to many doctors about symptoms and only now got told (after many years of complaints)that Mirapex could be the problem. It is hell getting off of it, even slowly. after being on it for a long time. God help me get off of it. WOnder what will go away and what will stay because of the drug use for such a long time. For awhile I was even on 2 pills 3 times a day. The nightmares are horrific and truly real feeling. I have a tingling hand now nearly all of the time. Is that also from Mirapex? F 56 8 years

5  Parkinson's Disease Increased sexual desire. Odd behaviors of OCD and voyeurism. Manic behaviors with increased breathing, sweating, like on Speed. Can not sit still. Increased food consumption with junk food and drinks. Then within 3-4 hours drop like a lead balloon. Freezing and angry mood. This drug is great for PD patients who experience freezing up and feel immobile. The side effects are horrendous and will cause tension, fighting, and inability to be aware that one's behaviors are bizzare. M 58 1 years

5  rls slight fatigue during the day take 0,25 mg at bedtime, additional 0,25 on long flights, and when I have to sit for hours. my life is almost manageable now compared to hopeless fatigue before. It works better for me than ropinirole (requip). I wonder about all the compulsive disorder comments byother users, if these were latent and the drug acts like a release. M 52 6 months

5  RLS Very vivid dreams, but would not classify them as nightmares. This drug has been wonderful for me. I now am able to cut the .25 mg doses in half, and combined with alcohol (which is probably not a great idea, but I'm a drinker) I always get a good nights sleep and no rls symptoms. M 60 8 years

5   After 40 yrs on all types of medication for depression mirapex has finally helped me with my depression. Only side effects are swollen ankles and stiff lower legs ( arthritis like) to the point that I have trouble moving after being in any sitting position and begin to walk. When walking notice some stumbling and stiffness in writing. M 68 3 months

5  Treatment-resistant depression At first I experienced tingling/ticklish sensations throughout my body along with feeling lightheaded. I had orthostatic hypotension also and some mild headaches and ringing in the ears. To counter this I got up slowly and increased my sodium and fluid intake. I also take cetirizine (Zyrtec) if I experience nausea and this resolves it. The side effects dissipated after a few days and increased the dosage very slowly over the next few weeks. My depression and anhedonia went into remission and I finally have my life back again. I'm currently taking 0.25mg t.i.d. I don't understand why some people experienced obsessions or compulsions because I haven't. I just feel normal and very emotionally stable now. Pramipexole is now being used by some psychiatrists for treatment-resistant depression. M 48 27 days

5  RLS Low bp 90/60 and high heart rate of 120.can not say if these side effects are due to mirapex. Since last 5 days when i started taking mirapex i feel i got anew lease of life. My life had become miserable. I was in constant pain and sleepless since last 4 years. The medication that doctors tried on me during last 4years were 1. amitriptyline 0. 5mg 2. chlordiazepoxide 0.5mg 3. gabapentin 625mg 4. pramipexole 1mg I found mirapex as a wonder drug. Can not say if the low bp and high heart rate is due to mirapex or these are the withdrawal symptoms of the drugs that i have taking all these years. Presently i fell as if i never had rls. Mirapex has helped me to that extent. How long it will work only god can tell. M 68 5 days

5  RLS Minimal side effects. Nasal congestion 30 minutes after daily dose. Poor sleep habits, frequently awake at night, drowsy while driving. To be fair, have had sleep issues since onset of RLS and could never stay awake while in a car. Mirapex could be your miracle drug. I spent 10 years in pain and insomnia before RLS was diagnosed 8 years ago. Without Mirapex I would be a basket case. Based on what I read here you will want to proceed with caution. M 54 5 years

5  Dystonia and Parkinsonism Slight nausea, constipation, vivid dreams. I take .25 mg 1x Mirapex along with Sinement 4x daily and Sinemet CR 1x daily at bedtime. I started about three years ago with sever muscle spasms in my legs, these worked up to tremors in my right hand, shoulder muscle pain, rigidity, stiffness on my left side, cogwheel arms, and nocturnal myclonic movements (punched myself in the nose a few times). After increasing dosages of Sinemet, the Mirapex has been added. This is a miracle drug for me. Nearly all the symptoms are gone, and I can lead a near normal life. I can live with the vivid dreams and slight nausea. M 45 45 days
