SEROQUEL  (QUETIAPINE FUMARATE):  This medication is used to treat certain mental/mood conditions (such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, sudden episodes of mania or depression associated with bipolar disorder). Quetiapine is known as an anti-psychotic drug (atypical type). It works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain. This medication can decrease hallucinations and improve your concentration. It helps you to think more clearly and positively about yourself, feel less nervous, and take a more active part in everyday life. It may also improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level. Quetiapine can help prevent severe mood swings or decrease how often mood swings occur.   FDA Approval Date: 2005-10-04 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Bipolar Type I Drowsiness, Lethargic. Would probably be wrapped around a pole if I continue on it. I talked with my psychiatrist and explained my situation. I stated that the medicine conflicts with my schedule seeing as how I work full-time (starting at 5 am) and I attend school at night. I told her that I fall asleep at the wheel and I can't complete my tasks at work, and forget about studying for school. She said I need to take the dose perscribed and if I don't like that I should get another Dr.....is that even ethnical? F 30 2 months

1  depression severe anxiety insomnia grogy lithagic, gained 30lbs, couldn't remember name,s words etc zombie like the next day, would catch myself not inhaling or exhaling (too relaxed), I still have blurry eyesight occasionally, had hard time reading other peoples experiences with this deadly drug. I started to feel like my organs were shutting down and I was swelling up. Developed a mass on my adrenal gland luckily my cortisol and hormone levels were normal. They thought I had hypothyroidism and developed nodules on my thyroid luckily no cancer and no hypothyroidim.. I now have to have both checked every 6mos to a year to make sure mass and nodules don't get to 4cc or they will have to operate. I was so knocked out at night didn't realize I was having acid reflux developed 8ccm hiatal hernia with a rare Cameron bleeding ulcer. Lost half my red blood cells 5 count (11 is normal)) had three blood transfusions and was in the hospital for a week I was acute critical and was severly anemic had to take large dosage of iron got my red blood cell count to 10. I am having sergury Monday for hiatal hernia repair and hopefully the Cameron ulcer will get better. I quit taking seroquel cold turkey the first night off of it my mind was racing and couldn't sleep at all sounded like hundreds of voices were talking at once it was horrible. Eventually after 3days I could sleep waking up about every 2 or 3 hrs. My doctor said that I was not suppose to go off it cold turkey and I was lucky I didn't have seizures. Besides side effects listed above I feel much better since I quit that deadly drug. My pysch was angry I went off Seroquel and told me that this will not end well????? Well she was wrong it has ended well , she prescribed me ambien 10mg and I sleep at night and wake up ref F 61 2 years

1  Bi Polar/Insomnia Terrible drug, experienced extremly drugged feeling at 25mg dose, slept but awoke feeling hung over the entire day. Next day cut dose in half and had extreme anxiety, tingling in my entire body, hypotension, feeling of confusion, restlessness I thought this was an awful drug for me. I'd say if you are going to take this to try a very small dose at first to see if it effects you the way it did me. Didn't help me at all. F 33 2 days

Prescribing dr would not let me go off so when she went on vacation I went to another dr who was flabbergasted that anyone would prescribe this drug for fibromyalgia.  1  Insomnia 300 mg- 1st day I took it, I had 3 vomiting episodes, started sweating, increased heart rate, tried to get up to go splash cold water on my face and passed out on the way to the bathroom. Woke up and managed to crawl into the bathtub and filled it with cold water until my body temp went down. Got back into bed, had 3 more vomiting episodes and then slept for 15 hours. Next day had slurred speech and difficulty standing for more than 5 minutes. Not recommended for anyone who has to think at their jobs. My doctor gave this to me in a sample pack and didn't tell me about any side effects. Told me to take as many as I needed because it was impossible to overdose on the meds. I took ONE pill and nearly went to the ER. It does make you sleep, but there are BETTER things to try. F 20 1 times

1  insomnia I was prescribed this medication for insomnia, after taking ambien cr for 30 days. I took 100mg, had terrible restless leg syndrome (am taking requip for that), was up all night walking up and down the hall, fell asleep about 5 am and woke up at 8 am with a terrible "hangover" feeling and unable to think or function very well. Would not recommend this medication for insomnia. It was the night from hell. Going to give ambien another try. F 34 1 days

1  Bipolar disorder In May 2004 I hired a personal trainer to help me lose those extra 10 ponds I needed to lose to fit into a bridemaid dress. The wedding was in June 2004, and I started Seroquel about a month after. In September it I had to hire my trainer again because I had GAINED 25 POUNDS. I am exercising way more than I have exercised before Sero-SUCKS. I got on the scale tonight, and surprise...another 5 pounds gained. This is my first time ever going online to research a medication. I feel compelled to let you know, because I KNOW FOR A FACT that my eating habits have been healthier, I have been exercising more than I have ever in my life and I am gaining too much. It's unbelievable. I cannot believe that this side effect is merely at 5% clinically. This medication should be discontinued or not even prescribed for anyone because the effects of looking and having to struggle to lose the Seroquel weight is 100 times more depressing than being my regular depressed self. I will take my manic skinny days back if I could over my now fat (big gut, skinny legs, looking like I have a belly tumor) self. I HATE IT. I am throwing all of my pills out the window as I drive to the gym to lose this swollen gut. MORE DEPRESSION BECAUSE OF WEIGHT GAIN mixed with bipolar disorder has caused me to seriously think about self medicating again to lose the weight. F 29 4 months

1  bipolar Extreme sleepiness and a need to eat immediately in the morning. I am hung over in the morning. Weight gain of about 10lbs per year. I have developed seizures and I jerk sometimes for no reason. This medication has slowly caused me to fall apart over time. First it was the spontaneous muscle spasms then trouble with speech. All of these are side affects.I am going to have a new doctor take me off as I have developed Tardive dyskinesia. F 31 6 years

1  Insomnia Severe disorientation, muddled thinking, extreme difficulty waking up, distrubing dreams. This medication made me feel like I was falling down a well that never ended. The pill made me sleep, but the sleep was not at all restful. I compare it to the feeling of being on an airplane for a very long time. When the plane finally lands and you get off, you don't know where you are or what day it is. It's very disorienting. I had frigtening dreams. I felt like I was too heavy to move from my bed. The first time I took it, I took one pill, the next time, half a pill, finally, one quarter of a pill. It was always awful. My insomnia is terrible, but honestly, I would rather not sleep than take this medicine and feel the way it made me feel. F 33 3 times
