SEROQUEL  (QUETIAPINE FUMARATE):  This medication is used to treat certain mental/mood conditions (such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, sudden episodes of mania or depression associated with bipolar disorder). Quetiapine is known as an anti-psychotic drug (atypical type). It works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain. This medication can decrease hallucinations and improve your concentration. It helps you to think more clearly and positively about yourself, feel less nervous, and take a more active part in everyday life. It may also improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level. Quetiapine can help prevent severe mood swings or decrease how often mood swings occur.   FDA Approval Date: 2005-10-04 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Bipolar Disorder (misdiagnosed) Huge weight gain, lethargy, dry mouth/trouble swallowing, confused and dizzy head, fatigue. I would advise people to think twice and then think twice again before taking this drug. My experience on this was awful. The only positive thing I can find to say about it is that it was very good for my insomnia. This stuff literally knocked me out cold within 30 minutes of taking it. In fact, I used to sleep 12 hours or more every night and could barely function during the day as I was so groggy and spaced out. My weight ballooned and I was permanently exhausted. I can’t stress the weight gain enough. Before taking this drug I was a slim guy in great shape for his age. By the time I finished I looked like I was wearing a fat suit and was unrecognisable! It didn’t even work as an antipsychotic for me - I literally went nuts on this stuff and had one psychotic episode/delusion after another and nearly lost everything. I’ve been off it for around 3 years and am still suffering. I’ve lost all the weight, but I don’t feel well at all. If you suspect you have a mental health problem, seek out a therapist and not a doctor who hands out pills. That’s what I did after wasting 10 years of my life with mental health quacks and the difference was amazing. These drugs don’t belong in your body any more than cigarette smoke or recreational drugs do. M 46 4 years

1  Chronic Insomnia I was prescribed Seroquel XR 600MG at h.s. for insomnia. The medication, without question, worked for my debilitating insomnia. However, what I could not tolerate was that I literally could not “get up” the next day. I was sleeping 12+ hours, and getting up around noon or even 1PM after going to bed at 12A. Obviously, I could not function during the day considering that “my day literally started at 1PM. My quack of a doctor has the philosophy of giving drugs to patients like candy, and practices the philosophy of giving “Uppers for downers, and downers for uppers” To mitigate the daytime grogginess, he actually put me on 90MG of Adderall (taken three times daily) His actions (and my naïveté) were becoming untenable. The other two side-effects consisted of experiencing “Akathisia’’ — which is a vague experience of internal restlessness..... For example, I found myself “walking around” I feel like I “said it all’ in the first column. However, I do not wish to scare people. Even though this drug clearly has deleterious effects on brain chemistry, the brain has something which is called Neuroplasticity meaning that even though a dangerous drug such as Seroquel can intermittently alter brain functioning, the brain can, and in fact, does consistently change (and actually grow neurons) to compensate for areas of the brain that have experienced damage, such that may be associated with Seroquel It is definitely possible to discontinue this drug. Titrate it down, and formulate a plan either with your doctor, or on your own. Do not hurry, or attempt to stop cold turkey. Try to develop a plan to decrease your dosage 10% a week. This may require you asking your doctor to prescribe you the 50mg tablets in some cases There is always hope, and even though this drug may have harmed you, (as it did to me) you have the power to ‘stop it’ and you have the power to: “Not Let it........WIN!  5  Bipolar Severe weight gain. Sedation, without Seroquel I cannot sleep. That being said, it is not a sleep aid. I have terrible real life like nightmares constantly. Constipation. At this point I am still worried about the Tardive Dyskinesia. Almost 20 years. But for my situation, It is worth the risk for the benefits. I have to be careful due to being up many times as night as it does make me very dizzy. It is not for everyone. I would personally prefer it over the older Trazodone or Klonopin which really knock me out and don't fully treat the bipolar. F 48 19 years

5  Bipolar I Significant drowsiness* and weight gain, disorientation* starts after 10 minutes, blunted affect*, feelings of mild dissociation, and occasionally euphoria. Antipsychotics are notorious for for lowering or downright eliminating libido and causing other sexual dysfunctions. *reason 400mg is taken all at once just before bed I submitted a review at the end of December 2013 and thought it would be helpful to be followup. Seroquel is an effective anti-manic med. but it’s also FDA approved for bipolar depression. I occasionally experience psychoses when severely stressed and sleep-deprived and Seroquel helps with those symptoms also. These brief psychotic responses are extremely upsetting so my doctor also prescribed PRN 25mg pills (up to 100 mg) to be taken when my thoughts become jumbled, racing or irrational (delusional) including suicide ideation. The 25 mg pills are the lowest dosage available and tiny enough for sublingual dosing when I deteriorate rapidly. Taking 25 mg starts to slow my thoughts and “dial-down” intense emotions which produces a deep calming affect. (I would not consider such a change to be “emotional blunting” (negative) under the circumstances. I will take a second, third and final dose until noticeable improvement. Seroquel is deeply sedating so driving can become dangerous. Seroquel is a powerful drug with considerable side effects and patients sometimes develop other health problems because of taking this drug. My goal (with my doctor’s consent) is to decrease my dosage to the lowest amount possible. Seroquel has been very effective in alleviating symptoms but I’ve never felt truly comfortable taking it.  5  Anxiety/depression/sleep Weight gain and lack of sexual desire Very vivid dreams which I actually enjoy and look forward to each night. This medication has helped my anxiety and depression INCREDIBLY plus it puts me right to sleep. I have tried numerous medications, and this is the one that has finally worked for me. It has been life changing in the most positive of ways. The only downside is some weight gain and lack of sexual desire - almost nonexistent. But the benefits FAR outweigh the negatives. I no longer have panic attacks nor feel like I am just "existing". F 43 6 months

5  Bipolar Weight gain, lethargy Started on 300mg per day then gradually reduced to 25 mg taken at night. Can increase dosage when needed which gives almost immediate relief from symptoms.I do find I have less energy than I used to but that is better than a mind and body on overdrive.Seroquel has made me calmer but you have to compliment it with life style changes. No drinking alcohol, caffeine, late nights and try to avoid any trigger situations. My kids call it my magic pills and I will continue to take them for life.  5  BiPolar type 2, 1 manic episode None that weren't to be expected. It's sedating by nature so kinda expected that given I take it for sleep. Works great for my sleep. Take 600mg per script however there's days I'm tired enough that I can just take 300. No grogginess as long as I sleep 8hrs. No weight gain but I watch my weight anyways because my other meds.  5  Bipolar w/ manic episodes Finally able to sleep well through the night. For me gaining weight has always been a problem and I've gained about 12 lbs since taking this medication. Some people see the weight gain as a negative while this is a positive for me. I have also experienced what finally feels like a "balance" in my life. I'm able to get my words out. I don't hold my feelings back anymore and I love it. I have not experienced anything negative while taking this medication. What works for some may not work for others. F 28 4 months
