SEROQUEL  (QUETIAPINE FUMARATE):  This medication is used to treat certain mental/mood conditions (such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, sudden episodes of mania or depression associated with bipolar disorder). Quetiapine is known as an anti-psychotic drug (atypical type). It works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain. This medication can decrease hallucinations and improve your concentration. It helps you to think more clearly and positively about yourself, feel less nervous, and take a more active part in everyday life. It may also improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level. Quetiapine can help prevent severe mood swings or decrease how often mood swings occur.   FDA Approval Date: 2005-10-04 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  sleep weight gain, increased hunger and skin rashes It did help for falling asleep sometimes but it keeps causing purple scaly rashes on me so I had to stop taking it. I took it for about three days recently and developed scaly cracking bleeding knuckles on my hands. It hurts and my hands feel like sandpaper. I have been taking it off and on for about three months and also have gained I think roughly 10 lbs. If you stop taking it some of the water weight will come off if it causes that for you. If you are of asian genetics or native american please do not take this. I am half native american, so I think that's why my skin is having problems. It's kind of scary. I hope it heals. F 32 14 days

1  Sleep Very tired within 20 minutes, but no deep. Weird vivid dreams when I would start to drift off waking me back up, only I couldn't open my eyes and it was hard. Hard time reaching to turn off alarm, took several attempts to push the button. Severe muscle fatigue in hands and arms with trembling. Hard time dressing, poor motor skills, inability to find words, almost felt I was in slow motion, brain fog, eyes swollen underneath like never before, sensitive to light, unable to drive, weird overall feeling of distance or separation from everything around me, very difficult to function. All this after just 1 dose! I will never take this medication again. When it was first prescribed to me 2 months ago, I read reviews and side effects and refused to take it. My Dr. talked me into it saying she thought it would help me sleep better. I would rather never sleep again than ever feel like this. F 48 1 days

1  depression Slept but turned into a zombie. Couldn't stop pacing. Dark, disturbing, violent thoughts. Nurse-practitioner seemed to be in love with this drug. I asked for an antidepressant but she refused to give me one and insisted that I take Seroquel. When she saw that it wasn't working she insisted that I increase the dose. Had my husband give me more and more until reached maximum dose. Ruined my life totally for 4-5 years, even though I took it for only 10 days. F 74 10 days

1  To help anxiety and sleep better It was offered to me after I weaned myself off of an addictive anxiety medication. It made me feel stupid but calm. I was taking it to help anxiety, it shouldn’t be prescribed off label, it messes with your mind. The drug addicts in the neighborhood wanted it to feel high, I didn’t, I knew it was trouble if they wanted it . I took it for a few years over a decade ago. Didn’t know about this website until today. F 56 5 years

1  Treatment Res. Major Depression PHYSICAL Huge allergic reaction Hives, bloating, swollen joints, swollen lips and eyes, water retention in legs so are x3 the size, swollen lumps on soles if feet. PHYSICAL acid reflux. Anxiety, restlessness, anger and irritability, inability to nap even though exhausted, staying in bed feeling low and numb all day, crying for no reason. No interest in other people and inability to maintain conversation. Cloudy head all day, so exhausted unable to do tasks such as cooking meals need help to look after my kids from husband and parents as not feeling 'with it' This made me feel worse, I have re tried this drug x3 over six months each time its given me dehabiliting allergic reactions needing steroids. Psychiatrist set on pushing this on me not sure why. Just gone through 3 weeks on a 3rd attempt I cant live like this, having to take x4 strong prescription antihistamines just to try to control this and just does not work. I dont see why l should take even more drugs to support one my body clearly rejects? Also huge weight gain even when you are so depressed you cannot eat!!!! If your dr says it doesn't cause w.g if you eat healthily and dont snack exercise etc they are lying as it totally affects your metabolism!! I gained I was on orlistat for weight loss trying to lose weight from my first attempt on quetiapine (gained about 14 lbs) and it even stopped that from working. Ive only gone on to gain more weight due to being Ill with coronavirus and being too exhausted to exercise. I was around 134lbs I've easily gained 35lbs since I first tried Q in months. I've always been slim and keenly cardio exercises x4 a week before What's worse is that I did see a benefit first time around but not the times afterwards, it definitely caused me to feel worse not sure if this is because it affects my depression directly or because it caused anxiety and extreme fatigue and cloudy head adding to what I had already. All I know is that I cannot poison my body physically and mentally with this any longer F 33 31 days

I felt awful the next day and knew this was not the drug for me if I want to keep working. Will work through without it. It's beyond me why people are prescribed this it's just awful.  1  BPD II, Complex PTSD - ICD-11) Awful side effects, debilitating. Extreme sedation alternating with racing thought induced insomnia, unbelievable lack of motivation, insatiable hunger, suicidal ideation, disturbingly realistic, vivid and frightening nightmares, uncontrollable weight gain (10lbs in 3weeks), exceptional irritability with extreme emotional outbursts. dysfunctional inducing, ‘make me want to die’ medication. Maybe give Niacin a try instead - I’ve been on Niacin for nearly 6 months and still improving, with none of the side effects of Seroquel, mirtazapine (Remeron), olanzapene, and Aripiprazole (Abilify - which I refer to as ‘Disabilify’ due to the serious debilitating side effects that I suffered after 8 weeks... ) and the side effects of several other atypical psychiatric medications. Seroquel and other similar drugs induced side effects far worse, in my opinion, than the manifestation of the psychiatric illnesses. I take Niacin - 1500mcg x 3 per day concurrently with 500 mcg vitamin C. Niacin May produce elevated liver enzymes; check with your doctor. For more information See psychiatrist Abram Hoffer’s book “The truth about Niacin” available on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Niacin-Story-Wonderful-Healing-Properties/dp/1591202752). I combine the Niacin therapy with regular psychotherapy, CBT and additional psychiatric and family medicine care. In my opinion, The BigPharma companies have yet to figure out how to patent and make money with safe, effective, naturally occurring substances, like Niacin and other in-earth mineral, salt or metal substances; of which another is lithium (which does have weight gain and other long term side effects) I got past the “normal” intense flush of the niacin, which will most likely dissipate after several weeks anyway . I wonder how and if psychiatrists and enforcers would feel “functional, effective and capable” while taking the Seroquel: a most dysfunctional inducing medication for ANY length of time. Maybe talk to your dr about giving Niacin a try instead - I’ve been on Niacin for nearly 6 months and still improving, with none of the side effects of seroquel, mirtazapine, Aripiprazole - which I refer to as ‘Disabilify’ due to the serious debilitating side effects that I suffered during and after 8 weeks... Niacin ‘may’ produce elevated liver enzymes; check with your doctor F 53 3 weeks

1  Bipolar Disorder Seroquel can cause tardive dyskinesia. I was diagnosed with it at 19. It's an unbearable, potentially permanent and disfiguring neurological disorder that destroys lives. I do not recommend it. F 19 2 years

1  Mild depression. *MILD* Only awake for 3 hours out of every day. Severe paranoia. Anxiety. Increased suicidal thoughts and behavior. Vivid nightmares. The deepest pit I've ever found myself in. This should NOT be used to treat mild depression. I was 17 at the time, mildly depressed, and needed good counseling. I was instead pumped full of chemicals that wreaked havoc on my whole being. I did not go back to that psychiatrist. F 17 3 months

1  Bipolar OK short term, very bad long term. Experienced stiffness, complete lack of empathy and compassion, extreme exhaustion, total disinterest in everything, suicidal thinking, tardive dyskinesia, lack of emotion and a seething depression. Withdrawal from this drug is hell on earth!! Do not stop cold turkey! Even reducing slowly I have experienced terrible rebound insomnia, sickness, itching and irritability. F 53 10 years

1  Insomnia Constipation (go to the bathroom about once or twice a week), weight gain/fat increase (15-20 pounds), daytime fatigue, increased sun sensitivity (huge increase in moles, freckles, and sun spots even with VERY minimal sun exposure) Unacceptable weight gain. Mostly FAT gain around my stomach area. Me and my family are naturally thin but now I look TERRIBLE, and I did NOT change my healthy eating habits...in fact, I ate LESS. Gained 3-4 inches on waist eating ONLY between 900 and 1800 calories most days (usually about 1200 a day). Sun sensitivity has given me white spots all over my body (dermatologist says from the sun) and a TON of new ugly moles. Weird thing is I avoid the sun like the plague now but I STILL get new moles. Only while on seroquel. This drug is the devil. Avoid it at all costs unless you are seriously schizophrenic!!! It is also dreadful to try to get off of. F 29 1 years
