DIAMOX  (ACETAZOLAMIDE):  Acetazolamide is used to prevent and reduce the symptoms of altitude sickness. This medication can decrease headache, tiredness, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath that can occur when you climb quickly to high altitudes (generally above 10,000 feet/3,048 meters). It is particularly useful in situations when you cannot make a slow ascent. The best ways to prevent altitude sickness are climbing slowly, stopping for 24 hours during the climb to allow the body to adjust to the new height, and taking it easy the first 1 to 2 days. This drug is also used with other medications to treat a certain type of eye problem (open-angle glaucoma). Acetazolamide is a "water pill" (diuretic). It decreases the amount of fluid that can build up in the eye. It is also used to decrease a buildup of body fluids (edema) caused by congestive heart failure or certain medications. Acetazolamide can work less well over time, so it is usually used only for a short period. It has also been used with other medications to treat certain types of seizures (petit mal and unlocalized seizures).    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Intracranial Hypertension Tingling & numbness in hands, feet, knees. Taste change but that has returned to normal. Uti possibly related to medication. Despite all the side effects this medicine has been a blessing for me! My issues were first detected through an eye scan, then confirmed with MRI & lumbar puncture. I have had severe migraines, neck pain and tinnitus since I was a child. Never given any answers or relief till now. As long as i take my medication on schedule my migraines and other symptoms just about disappear. Also my side effects are not as bad as long i keep on schedule and don't miss a dose. F 36 8 months

1  Intracranial hypertension Every side effect everyone else has listed including having to go to the ER again after my 2 week stay in the hospital for dangerously low potassium. Nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, joint pain, insomnia, exhaustion, vivid dreams that kept waking me up, made my anxiety worse. Given for IIH with severe papilledema, and lp pressure of 40. I took this for three weeks with no changes to my eyesight. I finally got over my fear and had them put the vp shunt in. Way better than the side effects of the diamox. Especially since i felt as if I would rather die than live the rest of my life with the side effects of diamox since I wasn’t living at all. F 36 3 weeks

1  IIH Worsening headache and nausea, lack of appetite, severe heartburn/reflux, numbness and tingling, brain fog, tiredness, excessive urination, metallic taste. I was prescribed Diamox 3 years ago and cannot remember any side effects (possibly due to a lower dose). This time around it has made me so incredibly sick that I am struggling to do anything. I can't sleep due to the frequent peeing and also the reflux. It's hard to eat or do anuthing, really. F 33 1 weeks

4  Iih Acetazolamide: was on 3 a day 250mg but was forgetful and tired so lowered to twice a day. I can get a feeling of morning sickness during the day so I use mints to stop this feeling. Rarely I get pins and needles in the legs and arms and a cob web stuck on the arm feeling. Memory loss is the main down side of this medicine for me. It has stopped my maze vision at the bottom half of my vision now I just get a blurred spot now and then. It took 1 month for fizzy drinks and food to taste normal and still now a tea will taste nice one day then yuck the next day. I’m at the same weight. F 35 3 months

Continued to take migraine medicine, but decided to try diamox to to remove fluid. After 2 days I had horrible side effects. Stoppedal taking it after 2 days per dr. It's been 5 days and still have bad side effects. Dr says once it's out of system, will be back to normal. It's not going away. M 19 2 days

1  IIH Confusion; pins and needles in hands, feet, elbows and lips; memory loss; shortness of breath; loss of appetite; extreme dry skin; extreme dry mouth; frequent urination; stomach/bowel changes; Worst medication used to treat IIH, especially when many people have no relief while prescribed it.  5  IIH Any carbonated beverage tastes like metal. Intense tingling in arms, hands, feet and face. But tingling subsided with the addition of potassium supplements. Fogginess of the head, feeling confused when in deep conversation. Tired often and frequent urination. First few months of use put me into a weird 'numb' state of mind, possible depression; and loss of appetite. After lumbar puncture, the use of Diamox completely rid me of my IIH symptoms. Took one year to get my eye pressure back to normal and ocular nerve swelling almost back to normal. Headaches and ringing in ears went away almost immediately. Have only relapsed with IIH symptoms once but uping dosage for 3 months brought me back to normal. Headaches return if dose is missed. Diamox saved me from getting brain surgery. F 28 21 months

1  To prevent altitude sickness At altitude, tingling in my hands, feet and legs. Light-headedness, fatigue, shortness of breath (I assumed at the time these were caused by altitude and thin air). About 11-12 days AFTER stopping Diamox, I suddenly started experiencing blurry vision at medium to long distances (trees and objects are blurry, can no longer read signs at more than about 50 feet, faces of people more than 20 feet away are blurry, nearly unrecognizable). Most worrisome is that it's been 3-4 weeks since I stopped taking Diamox (and about ten days since I first got the blurry vision) and my blurry vision is still just as bad as it was at the start, if not worse. Should I be worried? Anything I can do to speed up the recovery time? This drug is dangerous. I would not take it unless absolutely necessary. M 8 days

1  Meniere's Disease Increase Dizziness, Tingling hands feet, skin felt crawly, nausea, brain fog, easily confused, tired, tired, tired In my case I do not recommend taking this for Meniere's Disease. It made all the symptoms worse!! And it's been 3 months since I stopped taking it and the side effects are still happening. It's taken a problem and tripled it. It has really made my life unbearable. I was an active motivated, clear minded person and now I'm just lost in this fog of confusions and feel stupid and useless. It has destroyed what was left of my life and self esteem and am just praying that the side effects will go away. No one told me that this could happen and no one seems to care enough to listen ~ I am not imagining this and I know what happened and when things got so bad... be very careful with this medication ~ it may work for some people, but for the rest of us it has destroyed our lives... Thank you to everyone for their reviews, I've been lost and don't wish it on anyone, but it's good to know that I'm not "just imagining it." F 52 6 days

4  IIH Some dizziness. Subsided after first month. Ringing in hands, legs, and feet. Feet tingling still awakes me at night. Exhausted most of the time. And always feel cold. Dry hair and mouth. Soda has tasted metallic since day dosage started; however after a month all food began to taste like cardboard. Loss of breath with little exertion, almost feels like hyperventilation. Fogginess of thought is frustrating. Despite seldom having a meal, have not lost much weight on this medicine. This drug, along with effective lumbar puncture, has saved my vision, which was in great danger with CSF pressure of 570. The side effects are bothersome, but seem minimal when alternative is considered. When I miss a dose, it's noticeable. My eye aches, ear whooshing begins again, and headache starts to sneak in. So it is working. F 41 2 months
