DIAMOX  (ACETAZOLAMIDE):  Acetazolamide is used to prevent and reduce the symptoms of altitude sickness. This medication can decrease headache, tiredness, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath that can occur when you climb quickly to high altitudes (generally above 10,000 feet/3,048 meters). It is particularly useful in situations when you cannot make a slow ascent. The best ways to prevent altitude sickness are climbing slowly, stopping for 24 hours during the climb to allow the body to adjust to the new height, and taking it easy the first 1 to 2 days. This drug is also used with other medications to treat a certain type of eye problem (open-angle glaucoma). Acetazolamide is a "water pill" (diuretic). It decreases the amount of fluid that can build up in the eye. It is also used to decrease a buildup of body fluids (edema) caused by congestive heart failure or certain medications. Acetazolamide can work less well over time, so it is usually used only for a short period. It has also been used with other medications to treat certain types of seizures (petit mal and unlocalized seizures).    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  IH with grade 4 papilledema tingling everywhere, hair loss but no bald spots, memory issues, lack of energy, major weight loss, nausea, funny taste in mouth It doesn't have the best side effects in the world but when you are dealing with IH this is about all you can do. It has helped so much...very little pappilledema now but still have IH. F 29 11 months

4  PTC/IIH Tingling all over, especially in my hands and feet when I am cold. Also pins and needles from just sitting still, it can be painful and it doesn't subside from shaking it off. I get very dizzy if I bend down, and it regularly leads to feeling nauseous. Everything carbonated tastes gross (which may not really be a bad thing). As I started taking it and every time the dose got increased I was exhausted for at least a week while my body adjusted, I was sleeping all the time. I take 2000 mg a day plus digoxin and lisinopril to deal with the PTC/IIH - which is a whole lot of medication BUT I was practically blind when I was diagnosed and now all my symptoms have pretty much gone away. My optic nerves are still slightly swollen, so it's still there, but under control. So all in all I guess I'd rather deal with these side effects than go blind. I wish there was something available to ease the side effects... I've also lost about 55 lbs and am still going...though it doesn't seem to have lessened the build up of CSF, like the doctors and websites have suggested. F 39 9 months

5  Episodic Ataxia 2 No side effects yet, but we were told to drink lots and eat one banana a day... This drug has given my Daughter SO MUCH HELP! We are on day 6 and she has not had ONE episode! She is able to stay up late, without her eyes tiring or getting sick. She is also clearer (as opposed to the normal "brain fog") and I see her speech is MUCH clearer! GREAT DRUG! F 15 6 days

4  Psuedotumor cerebri Tingling in lips and occassional entire body chill that ripples through me. I still have the bad headaches, it hasn't helped too much. I'm on 2000mg now and even that isn't working. I'm considering gastric bypass (psuedotumor is now a pre-req on some insurances!) to lose the weight and hopefully cure this horrible issue that I've dealt with for the past 7 years. This is my second comeback! I also notice that I'm slow with comebacks (not a good thing for a blonde!) F 23 13 months

Pains in the back, neck, knees and ancles which has caused me to get pain meds. diamox has not helped my pressure all that much, it worked at first but my pressure keeps going up and down causing a lot of pain.  4  Pseudo-Tumor Cerebri Tingling in hands, feet dry mouth, bruising. The plus side of taking this medication is that I dont drink pop anymore makes it taste terrible and have not had any for a year now. That's how long I have been on the medication. It has helped the pressure and swelling has gone down alot. I have had the goldmens field vision tests done three times last year. And scheduled for another one in March this year. I still have floaters in my eyes. The headaches are gone somedays I have bad cordination. Dizzy spells once in awhile. I went from 164 lbs down to 115 lbs. I eat but get full fast the weight loss was being moniterd by my neurologist who said that I had to lose the weight so that it would be easier to treat the Pseudo-Tumor Cerebri. I wonder if that was one of the factors of why I had gained weight because of having the Pseudo-Tumor I'am only 5'4 and had always been small. I also will be having another lumbar puncture to check the pressure again to see if that has gotten back to normal, T Diamox has kept me from getting a shunt put in. And has helped with improving me from this diagnosis. It has its upsides and downsides to it like everything else F 36 1 years

5  PTC Psuedo Tumor Cerebri Very bad tingling in hands, feet, lip, eyes lids... Increased urnination, anything carbonated tastes metalic-like...You know when you are cold and shake and your chin shivers, I get that randomly all the time at any point in the day. I have had a perios for the whole duration of taking this medicine. (3 weeks and 2 days) Decreased hunger, I have lost 14 pounds in 3 weeks though (1700 or less calories a day)... I like diamox because I have no more blurred vision, black spots in visions, no bright lights in visions. I have not had a head ache since the spinal tap leak. My optic nerve is still swollen, so he up'ed my dose from 1000 mg a day to 2000 mg a day. F 24 3 weeks

4  Pseudo-tumor Cerebri Random tingling in feet, hands, arms, side of my face ("limb falling asleep feeling"), Cokes have a metallic after-taste, tired and sleepy at times I take 2 grams a day (2000 mg - that's 8 pills), and it initally helped rid me of the headaches from PTC, I still have double vision (which this is supposed to help), but it help to save my vision, the headaches are returning though, possibly due to a tolerance to the drug - its information packet from the pharmacy stated that it may begin to lose its affectiveness after long periods of use - short-term, its worth it, if you don't mind your feet and hands randomly falling asleep.  3  Pseduotumor Cerebri 1ST TWO WEEKS: Tingling in feet/hands/lips (this actually started w/in an hour of taking 1st dose), carbonated bevs tast like rust, MAJOR fatigue (could hardly work for about 6-7 days - slept ALL the time). NOW: Noticeable difference in cognitive thinking and continuous speech (I do presentations to groups all day for a living and this has really slowed me down -- consistently I forget my train of thought or forget words, even if I had already done the same presentation 3 times earlier that day) - Also, continued tingling (especially when in cold places), carbonated drinks still taste bad, but fatigue is COMPLETELY gone.... I felt back to my usual energy levels in almost exactly 2 weeks. My Neuro is going to take me off of this and put me on Topamax which has some similar, but more intense, side effects..... ANY suggestions? F 29 4 months

3  pseudotumor cerebri slight tingling in finger tips and i broke out w/ acne on my neck, chest and back. Sometimes it hurts. I take it 3 times a day, 250mg. It never really helped me. I had to have a shunt put into my lower back to drain the extra spinal fluid. I was almost blind. Now it keeps everything under control. But i still can't see that great. I still take the diamox but i'm so glad I have the shunt. I feel so much better. F 31 5 months

2  Pseudotumor Cerebri Great drop in mental ability...less quick with words and reaction times...way too frequent urination...tingling fingers and toes...waking up at night because foot had fallen asleep and hurt so much...lowered Potassium levels...exhaustion...dizziness, uncoordination, foggy feelings...DO NOT COMBINE WITH ALCOHOL. Drug lost it's effectiveness or I built up tolerance was taking 1000 mg - 2000mg daily before failed shunt surgery...now back up to 1500 and trying to get down in dose. This drug scares me.  5  pseudotumor cerebri/ICH The first weekend was absolutely horrible. I first took it on Thursday evening, and by Friday afternoon I was flat in bed with a nasty pressure headache, and spent the whole weekend there. It took me about two weeks to "mostly" adjust to it- I slept constantly and barely managed to make it through work. The remained of the 7 months were a great improvement over that first couple of weeks, and my sleeping patterns were close to normal again by month 3. After that first weekend, I have not had a pressure headache since, the dizzyness went away, and the "black spots" in my vision went away completely. Carbonated drinks were metallic-tasting, which is apparently par for the course, and irritating, but not really important. I almost didn't manage to stick with it through that first couple of weeks, but I'm very glad I just hung in there. Symptoms have yet to reoccur, though my optic nerve once again shows enlargement. (This is two years later.) If I find myself all the way out of remission, I'll not hesitate to take this medication again. F 28 7 months
