DIAMOX  (ACETAZOLAMIDE):  Acetazolamide is used to prevent and reduce the symptoms of altitude sickness. This medication can decrease headache, tiredness, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath that can occur when you climb quickly to high altitudes (generally above 10,000 feet/3,048 meters). It is particularly useful in situations when you cannot make a slow ascent. The best ways to prevent altitude sickness are climbing slowly, stopping for 24 hours during the climb to allow the body to adjust to the new height, and taking it easy the first 1 to 2 days. This drug is also used with other medications to treat a certain type of eye problem (open-angle glaucoma). Acetazolamide is a "water pill" (diuretic). It decreases the amount of fluid that can build up in the eye. It is also used to decrease a buildup of body fluids (edema) caused by congestive heart failure or certain medications. Acetazolamide can work less well over time, so it is usually used only for a short period. It has also been used with other medications to treat certain types of seizures (petit mal and unlocalized seizures).    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  Pseudotumor Cerebri I had tingling in my hands, feet, and sometimes my face. I feel exhausted all the time, like I can't get enough sleep. My headaches have improved as I only had one in the last 6 days and it's normally 5 or 6 a week that are completely debilitating. My legs, ankles and feet also feel "achy". I will give it 6 weeks when I have a follow up with my Doctor. If I am still feeling this way, I think I will have to ask about alternatives to taking this med. I have been too tired to live my life like normal for the last week. F 29 6 days

4  pseudotumor cerebri tingling in hands, feet, face (hydrating REALLY helps with this) tiredness, a little uncoordinated. would suggest putting up with side effects as opposed to losing eyesight. diamox is very effective and not reported to cause any fatalities or such. I can see out of my left eye again. F 30 4 weeks

4  pseudotumor cerebri tingling in feet and hands. somewhat foggy feeling, sometimes low energy. have had pseudo tumor for about 3 years. When diagnosed, began Diamox at 250 3x per day. However, as lost weight (40lbs), began to get low pressure headaches instead of high pressure and was able to get off meds. Have gained weight again, and pressure is increased and now back on 1/2 250 pill morning and 250mg at night. Hopefully, with weight loss, can get off meds. Weight loss is key to controlling this disease. F 51 2 times

4  Idiopathic IntercranialHypertension Tingling sensation in fingertips, toes and knees. It was more frequent when I started taking Diamox. It has reduced now. Fatigue and tiredness is always there and I feel sleepy always. I feel more thirsty and my mouth&lips are always dry. I lost 2-3 Kilos within a week of taking Diamox, but weight's been pretty much same after that. I have just started taking Potassium supplement (Potassium Chloride solution). Diamox being a diuretic brings out the Potassium levels in the body. F 26 4 weeks

2  psuedo Tumor Cerebrii I was diagnosed with pseudo tumor 3 years ago. At first I was taking the name brand diamox. I had no problems with it whatsoever. I didn't notice anything different. I was taking 500 twice a day I believe. The only side effect I had was tingling sensations at the bottom of my feet and sometimes my hands. But when I couldn't afford the name brand I had to switch to generic. The generic is terrible. It gave me really bad headaches 30 minutes after taking the meds. It also gave me weird vision. Not blurry, but like just weird. Like my head was a balloon. I am very sensitive to pressure changes and have a history of migraines. My trip to flagstaff made me very very ill and I though my head was going to explode. I get nauseous. But the diamox, name brand, helped that. I can travel. But without insurance, diamox is way too expensive. My doctor took my off of it and we are playing by ear. Every since I switched to the generic, the meds make me disoriented, migraines, and nauseous. But it is very serious. Not taking the meds can mess up your vision. I went from 20/15 to 20/25. My optic nerves are always swollen and I have a small blind spot in my left eye. The meds are important, regardless of the side effect. I've been dealing with this for years. Please contact me if you need any advice. This medication takes time to adjust to. F 21 3 years

4  Psuedo Tumor Cerebri Lots of tingling and numbness in my face hands and feet. I find it hard to focus due to so much fatigue. The Diamox eventually helped. It took a week with pain medication and medication for naseau for the diamox to start relieving the pressure behind my eyes and down my back. Being through this twice I would recommened a Spinal Tab to relieve the initial pressure then diamox to maintain the pressure. F 23 1 years

3  iih constant tingling in extremeties (either while laying still or repeated movement, like scratching makes fingers tinlge), pressure headaches around eyes, lower back pain, knees/ankles/hips/shoulders hurt for no reason, sodas tasted metallic but not anymore, always tired, acid reflux, no energy, loss of apetite It doesn't seem to be helping, but the decreased appetite has been helpful. The headaches are worse than when I started, but are not as constant. Will try it a little while longer before making request for new treatment method. F 27 5 weeks

3  IIH/ PTC Pins and needles in hands, feet and lips. Lowered alertness. Insomnia alongside absolute pathetic energy levels. Drinking pop tastes like a liquid 9 volt battery on the tongue. Loss of apetite. been on this 3 weeks now, and from day 2 onward my visual symptoms have all but vanished. I still get some obscurations from time to time, and i still feel my head and neck spine "balooning up" so thats good. Also this has ruined my hunger so hopefully that will help with that. The downside is ive got the good old pins and needles in my hands, feet, and lips. When i drink soda it feels like a liquid 9 volt battery being passed over my tongue. I have the most horrendous time sleeping, which makes seeing my new battery of doctors ever more inconveniant. Even when i sleep well, im forever drowsy and unmodivated. Sure beats spinal taps tho, especially considering im heavy enough that it start resembling a "pin the tail on the donkey" game for the doctors to find the right spot... F 24 3 weeks

3  Psuedo tumor cerebri When I started at 1000 mg I had the tingling and weird taste to pop, but I am now up to 2000 mg and no longer have the side effects due to the medication no longer working for me and my fluid continuing to rise. Very frequent urination now that I'm up to 2000 mg, somewhat of an appetite loss, the medication is only masking my signs and symptons, it is no longer keeping the fluid level down even though I take it 4 times a day, so in my view the medication is no longer working and it doesn't always cont. to work for everyone. I'm still have side effects to my vision. When I first found out I had this, my pressure level was at a dangerous rate and I almost lost complete vision in my left eye...I'm going through the same thing all over again....does anyone know why my medication isn't doing the job???  3  Pseutotumor Cerebri Tingling in extremities, extreme fatigue, nothing too severe that I cannot handle it. Only taking 500 mg/day though. I really need to lose weight which my doctor says is the best way to relieve the pressure. I see where other people have lost alot of weight but this medicine has not done that for me. Why am I not losing weight like the others. I still have my usual appetite but I am too tired to work out! Help! If you have any ideas on why I am not losing weight like many people have, please email me. Thanks! F 39 7 months

2  Psuedotumor Cerebri Numbness/tingling in fingers/toes,made it hard to walk.Facial swelling & numbness.Strange taste to food/drinks. Headaches worse.Overall I felt horrible and much worse then my PTC/IIH. This medication did not work for me. Saying that I wouldn't recommend it would be silly...just because it didn't work for me doesn't mean it would not work for someone else. I simply want to let the people that can not take this drug (like me) know that there are options for them. There are other diuretics out there. I now use Lasix with no symptoms and have a lumbar puncture twice a year to take off excess fluid that the Lasix does not help with. There is hope, you just need to talk to your Neurologist and see what works for you. If they tell you that you just have to live with the adverse reactions to a certain medication, change physicians. You are your own advocate. F 30 3 weeks

2  IIH/PTC Tingling feet and hands, extreme tiredness/sleeping a lot, pop tastes like crap, loss of appetite, extreme thirst, get cold easily, and just a lot of general discomfort >.< I've only been taking Diamox for about a week, but I can barely stand it... the side effects are probably just as bad as my PTC symptoms. But there's not much that can be done, if I want to keep my vision, suppose I'll just have to keep taking it. I usually sleep a lot, but since I started taking this, it's been absolutely ridiculous. All I can do is sleep and rest because I feel miserable most of the time. I really hope this medicine becomes more tolerable with time and begins to help, otherwise I would just rather live with the PTC. F 18 7 days

2  Pseudotumor Cerbri Very hard to get used to high dosage (2000 mg).Very dizzy and unstable feeling while walking around, feel like I'm going to pass out, blurry vision, painful eyes, extremely tired, body pains, eyes are very sensitive to light, sensitive to sound and smells, decreased appetite. I'm having a really hard time getting used to this medication. I ave been home from the hospital for 2 weeks after having 3 spinal taps to remove the extra spinal fluid. I feel like an vegetable, I can't move around the house, I am very weak and very dizzy. I was told it takes some time to get used to the Diamox but this is nuts. F 35 4 weeks

3  Intercranial Hypertension. Extreme tiredness, pins and needles in hands, feet and legs and sometimes face, depression and made me irratable at times. Also gave me kidney stones! First few weeks were hellish, tired all the time and made me very down, after a while my body got use to Diamox, but after 6 months I got kidney stones which is a so called `minor` health risk when taking these tablets.Still on them though as they do keep the pressure down somewhat.  5  Intracranial Hypertension Pins and needles in legs, feet, hands, face (legs and feet so severe it wakes me up at nights), severe nausea at first (passed after about 4 weeks), loss of appetite, get tired easily, really thirsty all the time. I haven't dared try drinking Coke or anything so I don't know if thats changed taste. It took about 4 long, headache filled weeks to start working, but once it did it is doing a great job. My optic nerve swelling has reduced dramatically from diagnosis to now (2 months) and I should have no lasting loss of vision. The doctors were discussing a shunt in the first four weeks, but I am willing to put up with the side effects forever if it means an alternative to shunting. I was on 1500 mg per day for 4 weeks, and then got increased to 2000 mg per day which I am still on. F 26 2 months
