| 1 | I recently described my experience with Zetia and my empirical cessation of taking it because of suspected and debilitating side-effects. Now that some more time has elapsed, I can say that my well-being continues to improve. My mood has even been elevated and my libido has gotten a boost. I am thoroughly convinced that Zetia causes a litany of physical problems and apparently some "mental" issues which can perhaps be traced to all the neuro-muscular pain and discomfort which one experiences. Again, use statins only in dire circumstances of hyperlipidemia! One thing that is worth mentioning: After discontinuing the use of Zetia, I apparently developed some gastric hyperacidity manifested by a feeling of "hunger" late in the evening and through the night. I took Tums and did get relief. | M | 76 | 1X day | 5/9/2012 | 1 | Elevated triglycerides, low HDL | Back pain, severe pulsating pain in my right knee and right calf, weakness, lethargy, runny nose, bloating, increase in abdominal girth, occasional cramping in the feet. | I am 76 years old, in essentially good health, 6'1", 203 lbs. None of the side effects I have described are, in my opinion, attributable to age. In fact, I stopped taking Zetia only one week ago and I have not had any back pain or the terrible pulsating pain in my leg which awakened me several times each night. I no longer feel "weak" and, where before, climbing the stairs was an effort, it is no longer my daily challenge. I believe statins are detrimental to your health and probably have systemic effects which are (at least initially) too subtle to attribute to the medication. I firmly believe that these drugs should only be used in situations of exorbitantly high cholesterol or triglycerides and where side effects, if and when they occur, are acceptable and tolerated on a risk versus benefit basis. | M | 76 | 2 years 10mg 1X day | 5/2/2012 | 1 | Cholesterol reduction - LDL | Extreme fatigue with labored breathing. Vomiting, Nausea and unable to walk or stand for long periods. Slept most of the day and night. Felt like I was dying. Within 48 hours after discontinuing the drug I don't feel half as tired and have ten times the energy now. Am also taking 80 mg. of Lipitor and the combined Zetia and Lipitor did nothing to reduce my cholesterol. My Cholesterol readings were better when I was on 40 mg. of Lipitor. | Would not recommend this drug to anyone. After going off the drug on the (1/12/08) I found out the clinical trial results had not been released even though the Doctors are prescribing the drug. Today (1/14/08) the news has released information on the clinical trials and indicates the drug could do more harm than good. My mother ended up using a wheelchair any time she needed to walk more than a few steps. Her right leg became noticeably thinner than her left leg. She saw multiple doctors and specialist, had numerous and sometimes painful tests - MRIs, CAT scans, MRI with myelogram, EMG, etc., testing for multiple diseases and conditions - nothing found. She went to physical therapy, was on muscle relaxants, multiple prescription pain medications, pain medicine injected into her spine - no relief. They even did minor back surgery (they said they weren't even sure it would help - it didn't.) I came across this site and immediately contacted her Dr. We took her off Zetia 3 1/2 weeks ago and she is a different person today. She is in therapy now to rebuild & stretch the muscles in her legs & back but she can finally walk. We will see if she regains full function. Somehow people need to be made more aware of the side effects of this drug. I was golfing and could not walk. It was a frightening experience. I stopped the drug immediately. Experienced the same thing with Pravachol. At age 75, does one really need to start on a cholesteral lowering drug? | F | 75 | 4 weeks | 8/17/2007 | 2 | zSomewhat high cholesterol | After about 2 years of taking Zetia, I am experiencing the same side effects of taking Zocor and Lipitor...but now some symptoms are worse. Common to all three were my leg pains, knee pains, back pains, shoulder pains, etc. After stopping talking Zorcor and Lipitor, all side effects disappeared within one week. With Zetia, I have intense fatigue and lack of sex drive. I feel so tired all the time, that I can hardly function. This has never happened before in my life and there is no logical other reason for it to happen to me now. Will stop taking Zetia today. It just seems that my body repels the statins or Zetia around the 2nd year of taking the drugs. Not being able to take anything for pain control that contains acetiminophen so that rules out just about every pain control drug that doctors are willing to prescribe, so I have no way to control the pain due to the inflammation. I did not notice any side effects until about three weeks of taking Zetia. I began to experience extreme fatigue. It also triggered a bout of depression, even though I have been on an antidepressant for many years to prevent recurrence of depression.
